4 M    ii. William BANNAN [95] was born in 1849 in RI Ve, Vic, Australia and died in 1936 in Qld, Australia at age 87.

General Notes: It would appear that William went to Queensland with his brother James in the late 1890's or early 1900's and was listed as a kangaroo shooter in the vicinity of Mackay at the same time his brother was living in that area. In 1914 William is listed as a farmer at Yinnar, Victoria, so he may have returned to Victoria after his brother John's death at Yinnar and farmed there for a while, but it would appear he returned to Queensland at some stage after this. He is listed as living at Thargomindah, Qld in 1925. His occupation at this time is listed as Station manager.

General Notes: This death is probably the correct death for Kate although it is registered as Anne, as the age is correct as Anne (Kate) is said to be 59 years at death, and Anne would only be 52 in this year.

In 1921 Francis's mother wrote to the War Office asking for his personal possessions to which the Army replied that whilst the belongings of his brother William J had been returned in 1917, in view of the time that has elapsed since Francis's demise, it was considered improbably that any other articles were recovered.

Francis Thomas Bannan is buried or possibly commemorated as his remains may not have been found, at the Villers Brettoneux Memorial Cemetery in France. He was a private number 1878 with the 23rd Bn. Australian Infantry AIF.

We regret to have to record the death of Mr. William James Fahey, which sad event took place yesterday morning, after a lengthy illness, which was borne with great fortitude.
The cause of death was diabetes. Mr. Fahey was a native of Richmond, Victoria, where he was born sixty nine years ago. He came to this State forty-four years ago, and was engaged as bookkeeper for Mr. J. L. Corrigan, for some time. He after wards went in the same, capacity to
Corrong, and it is as bookkeeper for the late Mr. Albert P. E. Tyson, that the deceased was best known in this district. When failing health rendered it desirable that he should come into Hay to reside, he continued to act as clerk and in a confidential capacity to some firms in the town,
with much acceptance. He was also a very successful secretary of the Hay Jockey Club, his interest in the club extending beyond his mere clerical duties. Of late years, he had acted as a director of the Hay Butter Factory Company Ltd., and in that capacity he was present at the annual
meeting of the shareholders, last month. Mr. Fahey married Miss Mary McKinnon, daughter of the late Donald and Mrs. McKinnon, of West Hay, and his wife and a son, William, and a daughter. Mary (Mrs. James Thomson) survive him. The deceased gentleman was one of the old school of dependable employees whose interest in their work extended far beyond their working hours.
He was an exceedingly careful and neat clerk, and no one who employed him in that capacity ever regretted it.
His host of friends will join in expressing their sympathy with the bereaved wife and family. The funeral took place this afternoon, moving from St. Virgilius' Church. There was a good and representative attendance to pay the last sad offices of respect to an esteemed citizen. Rev. Fr. Carroll officiated.

OBITUARY.

Mr. John McKinnon.
During the past six weeks death has removed more well known residents of the district from our midst than during any similar period of time in memory, the latest victim being Mr. John McKinnon, of Benduck Back Station, who died in the Hay Hospital on Friday evening, after three days' illness.
Jack McKinnon was born at Werribee Park, Victoria, 59 years ago, and was the younger son of the late Donald and Mrs. McKinnon, of West Hay. He came to the Hay district with the family at an early age, and as he grew up followed the calling of his father, that of station work. As a young man he entered the employ of the late Mr. Gordon Ayre, and later became an employee of Messrs. Stevenson, and Ayre. Being a good horseman he had no difficulty in qualifying for inclusion in
the Bushmen's Contingent, which took part in the South African War of 1900-2, and he served 12 months at the front. He came through unscathed, but his horse was shot dead under him in one skirmish with the Boers. He continued with the same pastoral firm and went to Moangul, in the Ivanhoe district, and later to Adavale, near Booligal. ; From there he enlisted for the Great' War,
and went into camp, where he stayed for some months, but was unable to pass the medical test. To his chagrin he was compelled to return to civilian life and found a berth with his old employers, going to Kaine, in the Western district of Victoria, to look after that property, which was then owned by the late Mr. A. G. Stevenson. About 1920, he returned to Benduck to take charge of the back station, and he has remained there ever since. He was very highly esteemed by his employers, and he had over many years proved his efficiency and his painstaking care for the welfare of the interests of the firm which employed him.
For some time past he had not enjoyed good health, but he did not complain, and carried on with his work. On Tuesday he had been working at a well, but in the evening appeared as well as usual. About 10 p.m., Mrs. McKinnon heard him searching for methylated spirits, which belaid he wished to rub into an old injury to his knee. As he did not return to bed she went to see what had happened, and found him kneeling on the floor. He said he was unable to get back to bed,
and she tried to make him comfortable where he was while she rang for help. She could not raise anybody on the telephone, and as she was alone with her husband, other members of the family being in Hay, she went to catch a horse to put in the sulky. She succeeded in doing this. Her husband by this time was in a state of collapse, but she placed him in the sulky, and then she
drove the vehicle over three miles to Mr. S. Milliken's Yarrawa. where the son was employed. Here Mr. McKinnon was quickly transferred to a motor car and driven to Dr. Thompson's, the doctor being informed beforehand on the telephone. The patient reached Hay about' 3a.m., and was at once taken to the Hospital, where it was found that he was suffereing from a bad paralytic seizure. He revived slightly next day. but complications setting in he relapsed, and died on Friday evening.
Mr. McKinnon was married at Hay over 30 years ago to Miss Lizzie Mitchell, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. Mitchell. She and a family of one son and nine daughters survive. They are Mr. John L. McKinnon, Mary (Mrs. Reid, Cooinbil); Sarah (Mrs. F. C. Johnson of Greenvale) ; Victoria (Mrs. H. A. Keys); Flora; Minnie (Mrs. T. Cameron, Benduck) ; Jean, Matilda, Margaret and Ethel, the youngest girl being about 12 years old. General regret is expressed with the sorely bereaved
family.
The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the body being buried in the Presbyterian portion
of the cemetery, after a service had been held at the Church. Both the services were conducted by the Rev. H. D. Mackie. There was a good attendance of town and district residents, who took the last opportunity to 'show their regard for a man who was widely known and highly respected by all who came in contact with him. At the close of the graveside service, 'The Last Post' was sounded by Mr. W. J. Wilkins.

OBITUARY
Mr. John Connor
The death occurred very suddenly yesterday of an old and highly respected resident of the district in the person of Mr. John Connor, in his 72nd year.
Mr. Connor, who had not been in the best of health for some little time, went out with his son, Mick, to Burrabogie, to pick up some of his tools. Whilst there, sitting in the car, he suddenly collapsed and died before medical aid could reach him. Mr. Connor was the eldest of the nine children of the late Joseph Connor and came to this district at the age of five years from Mount Hope. He has lived here ever since.
He was employed as an engine driver at the irrigation area pumping station for several years from about 1911, but most of his life has been spent in earth moving contract work. He worked his teams over a large part of the Hay district, tank sinking, road building, and other work and he was known not only as a most honest straight forward dealer, but a man who scarcely knew when the day's work was done. His toil was during the days when a man had to plod behind his horses with plough and scoop and a great many of the dams in the district, as well as the roads, resulted from his, industry.
During his younger days Mr. Connor, was a keen cricketer, footballer, and swimmer; he won a lot of trophies at the latter sport particularly.
His wife, who was a Miss Minnie McKinnon, one of a very well known family in the district,
survives him with their five, children. The family are Sister Gwen Connor (of the Sydney Hospital), John Edward (Mick) of Hay), Thelma (Mrs. Ridges, Hay), Charlie (Hay), and Joyce (Mrs. Connelly, Melbourne). One son and Charlie and Sister Gwen Connor, served in the A.I.F. over seas. Sister Connor served for a long time with distinction in the Middle East with the Nursing Service.
He is also survived by one sister, May (Mrs. Reg Hedley, of Hay), and four brothers, Joseph, Les and Fred (of Hay), and Arthur (Sydney).
The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 o'clock, from the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Hay. Mr. Ron Wall is making the funeral arrangements.

FAMOUS BAKER

A bena Football and Netball Club volunteer and famous Korumburra baker has died.

Leonard George Jones (Pop or Poppy, as he is known to many) was born on December 13 1925 at Bendigo, the second of three children to George and Kath Jones.

Len started school at Red Cliffs primary, then St. Joseph's Catholic school in Red Cliffs until the family moved to Swan Hill.

In his youth, Len was a cub Scout, a roller skater, motorbike and sidecar racer as well as playing harmonica for a regional radio station.

He was even a ballroom dance instructor at a prestigious Melbourne dance academy.

Len left school around the age of 14 and took up an apprenticeship as a baker in Swan Hill.

He continued his apprenticeship in Nhill before finishing up at Kew.

During his apprenticeship year, World War 2 broke out Len enlisted in the Navy.

Len was not taken in, however, as his baker's apprenticeship didn't allow for such under the terms of the Essential Services Act, so he had to stay home and bake bread.

Employment opportunities after the war led Len to Yenda (NSW) where he started his own business as a baker.

He gave this away and followed his father's footsteps, joining the PMG where he worked as a linesman, cable joiner, and jackhammer operator.

It was around this time he met Margaret Sullivan.

[[The pair were wed on May 16, 1953.]]

Len and Margaret had nine children, Michael, Kathleen, Patricia, Gregory, Susan, Maxwell, David, Fiona and Kellie; then 21 grandchildren, a number which is still increasing.

Len gave away his PMG job in the late 1950's and joined his brother-in-law working on a fruit block at Woorineen, near Swan Hill.

When the block was sold returned his hand back to baking and the family moved to Myrtleford before moving to Korumburra 43 years ago.

Len soon earned fame as the baker at LeGross's in Korumburra, along with his home delivered bread run.

Len left the bakehouse and took up farmhand work, milking cows in the district for Walkers (Korumburra), Castles (Bena), Prossers (Loch), and Lupis (Bass Valley) before being forced onto an invalid pension 24 years ago.

At this juncture (1980) the family settled at [[21 Swanson Street,]] Korumburra into what at the time was a rather plain housing commission house.

Len's love of gardening saw him transform the appearance with a very well groomed garden.

But it was not only the front garden that was Len's showpiece, he toiled equally hard in the backyard with his veggie patch, fruit trees and orchids.

As his children grew, Len's interest in life followed them.

For many years he helped coach at the Bena Netball Club and was a team manager thirds and fourths teams for the Bena Football Club.

Len also served on the Bena Football Club Committee.

He was also involved in the cricket club at Bena, playing key roles in coaching and team management.

Yet despite all these involvements in things for the kids, Len still managed a bit of time for fishing, cards, a bet or two on the horses, and time to watch the cricket and footy on TV.

After an illness, Len passed away peacefully at Korumburra hospital on April 9, aged 77 years.

Noted events in his life were:

• He worked as a baker in 1949.

• In 1949 he resided at c/- C Gibson in Woorineen, Vic, Australia.

• He worked as a linesman in 1954.
