Notes: At the 1841 census of England, in the neighbourhood where James Crocker
and family lived, also lived Joseph and Jane Pitcher, and also several families
names Childs (Childs was given as his first wife's mothers maiden name on her
death certificate, although his mother was more likely Oliver rather than
Child's). Also living with James Crocker and family was Prudence Bow, aged 50
years.
James Crocker was a Blacksmith in the Yapeen area. He was a widowed neighbour
of Jane Tangey (Mitchell) and is thought to be the father of at least the last
two children of Jane. He had 7 children with his first wife, but 4 of these
children died in infancy.
On 1 October 2016, DNA results confirmed this theory. I found an Ancestry.com
member who shares 50 cM of DNA over 5 segments with Margaret Ann Sullivan. This
man's direct ancestor and the only connection so far found, was George Crocker,
the brother of James Crocker, sons of James Crocker and Mary Ann Bow.

Notes: Richard Tangey and Jane (Mitchell) left Plymouth on the 7th of September
1854 on the "Violet", arriving at Portland on 14 December 1854. They
had 9 children between 1856 and 1868.
It would seem that Richard and Jane became estranged sometime prior to 1871, as
in 1871 Jane had a child, Anne Tangey, whose father's name is registered as
unknown, then in 1878 she had Rose Crockett (probably Crocker) Tangey whose
father is registered as Richard Tangey and in 1881 she had Joseph Crocker
Tangey whose father is named as unknown.
This assumption is strengthened in view of the fact that an official separation
notice was published in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper on 13th March 1877
between Richard Tangey and Jane Mitchell .

Following Jane's separation from Richard Tangey, Richard went to Tasmania
in about 1885. He married Jane Barnett, the widow of a Chinese cook, George Ah
Young, who was the mother of two children. Richard adopted her two boys and
they became Tangye's. Richard and Jane Barnett had 5 children in Tasmania, 1
boy, 4 girls. Around 1897, Richard and Jane Barnett moved to New Zealand and
had another daughter and son. They changed the spelling of their surname from
Tangey to Tangye.
Eighteen months after the separation advertisement of Richard and Jane
Tangey was published in the Newspaper, Rose Crockett(r) Tangey was born to Jane
and 3 years after that, Joseph Crocker Tangey was born.
James Crocker registered the birth and death of the youngest child, Joseph
Crocker and was also the undertaker who buried Joseph. James Crocker was a
neighbour of Jane and was a widower. It is assumed that James Crocker is most
likely the father of at least the youngest 2 of Jane's children. According to
the information I have received, James Crocker left after he and Jane had been
together for around four years.
On 1 October 2016, DNA results confirmed this theory. I found an Ancestry.com

man's direct ancestor and the only connection so far found, was George Crocker,

BEAUFORT.
A miner named James Crocker met with a serious accident between 3 and 4
o'clock yesterday afternoon. It. appears he was sinking in shallow alluvial
ground at Duncan's Gully, about a mile and a half from Raglan, when the ground
caved in on him.
It was about 10 or 15 minutes before he was dug out. His chest is badly injured.
He is being taken to the Ballarat Hospital by the 1.30 train.

The remains of the late Mrs Charlotte Crocker, of Raglan, were in terred in the
Beaufort Cemetery on Monday, the funeral being attended by a number of friends
of the deceased.
The coffin-hearers were Messrs R. Pitcher brother of deceased), W. Pitcher
(nephew). A. Crocker (brother-in law), T. Tiley. E. Tiley, and Fred Tiley. The

OBITUARY.
An old and respected resident of Raglan in the person of Mrs Charlotte Crocker,
wife of Mr James Crocker, died at that place on Saturday at the age of 65
years. The cause of death was pneumonia, the illness being of seven, days'
duration. The deceased leaves a widower
and grown-up family of six to mourn their loss.

DEADLY CHRISTMAS GOOSE.
BEAUFORT, Wednesday - Absolom Crocker, of Raglan, yesterday morning breakfasted
on the remains of a Christmas goose which had been left in a pan over-night.
Some hours later he collapsed, and Dr Jackson found that he was suffering from
ptomaine poisoning. It is expected that he will recover, although he is not yet
out of danger.

A FATAL RIDE.
BEAUFORT, Tuesday
A fatal accident happened to Francis William Crocker, 14 years old, the eldest
son of Mr. Absolom Crocker, at Raglan, yesterday evening. He was riding on a
load of firewood when the horse bolted, through pieces of wood falling, and
Crocker was thrown. The wheel of the dray passed over his shoulder and neck,
and he only lived about five minutes afterwards. The accident happened within
200 yards of the house, and two of deceased's sisters were following behind the
dray at the time.

found an Ancestry.com member who shares 50 cM of DNA over 5 segments with
Margaret Ann Sullivan. This man's direct ancestor and the only connection so
far found, was George Crocker, the brother of James Crocker, sons of James
Crocker and Mary Ann Bow. The Ancestry members name is 1_philgeo who is a
direct descendant of James Crocker and Mary Ann Bow whose son George Crocker
married Mary Ann Reynolds, and had daughter Martha Mary Crocker, Martha Mary
married Samuel Watts Pope, who had a son, George Albert Pope, who had a son
William Samuel Pope and is the father of 1_philgeo.
There is strong evidence to suggest that Rose Crockett Tangey's father was not
Richard Tangey, as is recorded on her birth certificate, but was in fact James
Crocker.
Richard Tangey and Jane (Mitchell) separated on the 13th March 1877. The
separation was published in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper. This was 18 months
prior to the birth of Rose and 3 years before the birth of the youngest child
Joseph. (Feb 2013)
In view of the fact that the Rose's previous sister Anne born 1871, has father
recorded as unknown, then the next child following Rose, Joseph born 1881, also
has an unnamed father, I assume that at least the last two children, Rose
CROCKETT (probably supposed to be Crocker) and Joseph Crocker Tangey are
actually the children of James Crocker, who was said to be an blacksmith and
undertaker. Despite the fact that Rose's father is recorded as Richard Tangey
on her birth certificate, her second name would at least make this suspect. On
Rose's birth certificate, her mother's name is given as Jane Price, however I
believe that this is a transcription error as the entry underneath also gives
the mothers maiden name as Price and the age of 30 for both entries, but the
address is given as Yapeen as it was on the birth of Joseph Crocker Tangey. The
entry has later been corrected to give the mothers age as 43 years, but the
maiden name has not been corrected. There is also a correction stating that the
mother was born in Cornwall. The birth was registered on 28 December 1878 and
the corrections were made on 31 Dec 1878. (Jan 2013)

On New Year's Day a very sudden death look place in Newstead, Mrs Collihole the
wife of Mr J. Collihole dying only after a few hours illness the cause of death
being uraemic convulsions Mrs Collihole was only 38 years of age, Her husband
and eleven children are left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on
Tuesday in the Newstead cemetery, the Rev Nicholas conducting the service. Mr

Crocker - Humphreys. - A quiet but pretty wedding took place at "Mena, '
IBeaufort. the residence of Mr and Mrs H. Cuthbertson (brother-in-law and
sister of the bride) on 20th October, when Miss Elizabeth Breeze Humphreys, of
Beaufort (third daughter of the late Mr and Mrs J. B. Humphreys) was married to
Mr Oliver Josiah Crocker, of Mildura (second son of 'Mr James Crocker and the
late Mrs Crocker, of Raglan). The Rev. E. H. Coltman, of the Beaufort Methodist
Church, was the officiating minister.
The ceremony took place in the drawing-room which was tastefully decorated with
lilies and strings of small wedding bells the latter being suspended from the
ceiling. The bride, who was given away by her brother in-law (Mr H.
Cuthbertson), was becomingly attired in a navy twill costume, with hat of navy
crepe de chine, trimmed with gold tissue. She carried a handsome bouquet of
white roses and fern. The bridesmaids were the Misses Verna Cuthertson and
Nellie Patterson (two little nieces of the bride), who wore dainty dresses of
white, voile (haud-embroidered), carried bouquets of pink roses, and wore gold
bangles (the gifts of the bridegroom). Mrs Coltman played "The wedding
march" at the conclusion of the ceremony, and Geoff. Cuthbertson (nephew
of the bride) hung a lucky horseshoe on the bride's arm as the newly-married
couple were leaving the drawing-room. A number of relatives of the happy couple
were the (guests of Mrs Cuthbertson at a sumptuous wedding breakfast. The Rev.
E. H. Coltman presided at the festive board, and the customary toasts were
cordially honored. The bride was the recipient of many valuable and useful
presents (including a number of cheques). Mr and Mrs Crocker subsequently
motored to Ballarat, and from that city travelled to Wangaratta, where the
honeymoon
was spent. Their future home will heat Mildura,

WEDDING.
WEDDING.
A very pretty wedding took place in the Raglan Church on Thursday, Sept. 17th,
when Mr Ernest William Smith, third son of Mr and Mrs Henry Smith, of Mildura,
was married to Miss Emily Esther Crocker, second daughter of Mr and Mrs James
Crocker, of Raglan. Rev. W . B. Jessop (Anglican) officiated.
The church was beautifully decorated with wattle blossom and ivy by the girl
friends of the bride, and presented a very charming appearance. As the bride
entered the church on the arm of her father, "The Voice that Breathed o'er
Eden" was sung by the very large gathering of friends. The bride was
charmingly attired in a beautiful dress of Honiton lace over white silk, and
wore the customary wreath and veil, and carried a beautiful bouquet of white
camellias, violets, and asparagus fern, with satin streamers (the present of
Mrs L. Watkin.) Miss Flo. Crocker (sister of bride) acted as bridesmaid, and
was neatly attired in cream embroidered voille, with pink sash and hat to
match, and carried a bouquet of jonquils and violets. Mr Jack Waldron acted as
best man. Bridegroom's present to bride, cheque; bride to bridegroom,
travelling rug; bridegroom to bridesmaid, gold brooch, set with amethyst and
pearls. After the ceremony a wedding tea was partaken of at the residence of
the bride's parents by about 40 guests. Rev. W. B. Jessop presided, and the
usual toast list was honored. The happy couple left by the evening train for
Melbourne, amidst showers of confetti; the Beaufort platform being crowded. The
bride's travelling dress was brown cloth, trimmed with silk, and buttons to
match, with Dolly Vardon hat. In the evening a large number of friends spent, a
very enjoyable time, when dancing was indulged in, in Mr R. Pitcher's barn,
until after midnight. The presents were costly and numerous. Mr and Mrs Smith's
future home will be at Merbein, via Mildura.

The June appeal for the British Red Cross from the Raglan State school resulted
in £8/13/ being raised. This amount has been forwarded to head quarters,
together with a parcel of
books and soldiers' comforts.

Tuesday, 12th June, when Miss Florrie Crocker, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs
James Crocker, of "Fair View," Raglan, was married to Mr Arthur
Kneebone, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Philip Kneebone, of Surrey Hills,
Melbourne. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. W. C. Wood. The bride entered

when the usual toasts were honored. The bride travelled in a light grey coat
and skirt, trimmed with black velvet, and hat to match. Many pretty and useful
presents were received by the happy couple. Four generations of the Crocker
family were represented at the wedding tea.

Notes: Annie was born at Newstead. The legal certifier of the birth was a Mrs Sullivan.
Mrs Sullivan appears to have certified many births in the Newstead area, so
possibly she was a midwife. Unfortunately her first name is not known.
Annie lived on a fruit block no. 496 at Red Cliffs until after her husband's
death. She then moved into Red Cliffs. In 1952 she moved to Mildura where she
ran a boarding house, but she later returned to Red Cliffs where she lived at
32 Laurel Street until her death. This house was sold in approximately the late
1990's. Annie's daughter Mavis had lived in the house since her mother's death
and Mavis then moved into a unit in Red Cliffs and later went into residential
care.
She was referred to as Grandma by her grandchildren.

Daniel enlisted in WW1 in Melbourne on 8 January 1916. He was 35 years 6 months
of age when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Reinforcements. His enlistment
records show he was born in Newstead, his address was Newstead and he was a
labourer. His height was 5' 8 3/4", his chest was 34-38. His complexion
was described as fair, eyes grey and hair (streaky) brown. His Service number
was 14630 22552. I am unsure why two service numbers appear in his records.
He embarked from Australia on 20 May 1916, but the ship's name is unknown.
He fought in France in the 23rd Howitzer Brigade. He was a gunner but was later
made a driver.
He spent time hospitalised for various reasons, including lumbago and
gastritis.
He was discharged on 12 March 1918 due to gastritis and returned to Australia
on the Kenilworth Castle.
He was getting ready for the Anzac ceremony in 1948 when he collapsed and died
later that day.

The Presbyterian Church, Merbein, formed a pretty setting for the marriage of ,
Jessie, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Alexander, of Karadoc avenue, Irymple,
to James Mitchell, elder son of Mrs Collihole and the late Mr Collihole, of
Joyce's Creek, Newstead district.
The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. Blackwood; of Mildura, on Wednesday,
January 18. The bride looked charming in a gown of bordered Ivory
crepe-de-chine, with a cream hat and flowers to match. Misses Florrie and Jean
Alexander, sisters of the bride, were bridesmaids. The former's, dress was a
pretty bordered mauve crepe-de-chine and Miss Jean Alexander's frock was a
becoming "Betty Blue" crepe-de-chine, with frills of cream lace.

Murray lost an arm in 1924 when he was shot by a gun he was carrying. The arm
was badly damaged and had to be amputated. A newspaper article appeared in the
Melbourne Argus.

A lad named Murray Collihole, in the employ of Mr. S. Berkin, Strangways, was
returning to the homestead after being out shooting hares, and when the act of
crossing a fence the gun was accidentally discharged The boy's right arm was
badly injured from the wrist to the shoulder.
He was immediately conveyed to the Castlemaine Hospital.

Notes: Danny married Sylvia in 1955 and they adventured off to Melbourne for 6
months, Danny being part of the Melbourne CFA. They moved back to Sunraysia
settling into Cardross and eventually buying a fruit block from Sylvia's
father, where Danny and Sylvia started a family life together. Danny worked for
the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for many years. Danny and Sylvia
lived a fulfilling life working and celebrating life, eventually retiring to
Fitzroy Street in Red Cliffs.
After Danny lost his wife Sylvia and Jean Landells lost her husband Noel, Danny
moved in with Jean, being great friends and company for each other.
Danny often headed down south to visit his sister Margaret and family always
carrying a stack of fruit and vegetables and honey with him when he came. On
Margaret and Len's return visits up north by Margaret and family always came
back with bucket loads of fruit and vegetables and honey.
Danny and Jean enjoyed travelling around the country visiting family and
friends.
In the last few years of his life, Danny's health started to deteriorate. Danny
lived with Jean for many years, returning to his own home for a short time, and
from late July 2015, he spent time in Jacaranda Lodge in Red Cliffs, continuing
to attend the Mildura Hospital 3 days a week for haemodialysis.
Some of Danny's hobbies and interests during his life included

*Fishing - he loved his fishing in the mighty Murray River, or anywhere he
could put in a line.
Danny, being born and bred in the Red Cliffs area, made Appearances in Weekly
Times newspaper in story entitled "The Day the River Drowned" dated
19 June 2013 with young Danny and Sunday Herald Sun newspaper 29 June 2003
entitled "By Gum, Trees are dying".

FAMOUS BAKER
A bena Football and Netball Club volunteer and famous Korumburra baker has
died.
Leonard George Jones (Pop or Poppy, as he is known to many) was born on December
13 1925 at Bendigo, the second of three children to George and Kath Jones.
Len started school at Red Cliffs primary, then St. Joseph's Catholic school in
Red Cliffs until the family moved to Swan Hill.
In his youth, Len was a cub Scout, a roller skater, motorbike and sidecar racer
as well as playing harmonica for a regional radio station.
He was even a ballroom dance instructor at a prestigious Melbourne dance
academy.
Len left school around the age of 14 and took up an apprenticeship as a baker
in Swan Hill.
He continued his apprenticeship in Nhill before finishing up at Kew.
During his apprenticeship year, World War 2 broke out Len enlisted in the Navy.
Len was not taken in, however, as his baker's apprenticeship didn't allow for
such under the terms of the Essential Services Act, so he had to stay home and
bake bread.
Employment opportunities after the war led Len to Yenda (NSW) where he started
his own business as a baker.
He gave this away and followed his father's footsteps, joining the PMG where he
worked as a linesman, cable joiner, and jackhammer operator.
It was around this time he met Margaret Sullivan.
[[The pair were wed on May 16, 1953.]]
Len and Margaret had nine children, Michael, Kathleen, Patricia, Gregory,
Susan, Maxwell, David, Fiona and Kellie; then 21 grandchildren, a number which
is still increasing.
Len gave away his PMG job in the late 1950's and joined his brother-in-law
working on a fruit block at Woorineen, near Swan Hill.
When the block was sold returned his hand back to baking and the family moved
to Myrtleford before moving to Korumburra 43 years ago.
Len soon earned fame as the baker at LeGross's in Korumburra, along with his
home delivered bread run.
Len left the bakehouse and took up farmhand work, milking cows in the district
for Walkers (Korumburra), Castles (Bena), Prossers (Loch), and Lupis (Bass
Valley) before being forced onto an invalid pension 24 years ago.
At this juncture (1980) the family settled at [[21 Swanson Street,]] Korumburra
into what at the time was a rather plain housing commission house.
Len's love of gardening saw him transform the appearance with a very well
groomed garden.
But it was not only the front garden that was Len's showpiece, he toiled
equally hard in the backyard with his veggie patch, fruit trees and orchids.
As his children grew, Len's interest in life followed them.
For many years he helped coach at the Bena Netball Club and was a team manager
thirds and fourths teams for the Bena Football Club.
Len also served on the Bena Football Club Committee.
He was also involved in the cricket club at Bena, playing key roles in coaching
and team management.
Yet despite all these involvements in things for the kids, Len still managed a
bit of time for fishing, cards, a bet or two on the horses, and time to watch
the cricket and footy on TV.
After an illness, Len passed away peacefully at Korumburra hospital on April 9,
aged 77 years.
