Currier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour.

After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoemaking and glovemaking.

FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF ROBERT BERNARD BLACKWELL IN 1987 (GRANDSON)
I've just picked up a letter from the ex Ivy Kemshead, Ivy Smith and she gives a bit of information here about Dad's family. She said to Gilbert, "Do you want to know who Grandma Blackwell's mother was. She was a Miller. I don't know if you remember Uncle Jim that lived under the old walnut tree, he was Grandma Blackwell's brother. Then there was Nell Johnson and Jane Burdett, two sisters and I think there was another brother but cannot call to mind at the moment." She said mother used to take us visiting her grandmother. They lived up on old (yard ?) .. Well I can't remember Uncle Jim, I was too young. Anyway that was part of it. They came from the bottom end of Higham where there was the old village green that they used to have years and years ago…… Usually a triangular strip of ground with a road running along one side and two on an angle leading to another street out the other end. Well that's where they lived. The main road to London went past the front and then there was the one angled on the left hand side, one on the right, they angled…..,.made like an equilateral triangle and down where the two other roads these very narrow lanes met they entered a road which went down to the river and ???????????? but anyway that's where they lived. And there was this enormous walnut tree, it was an enormous thing, I think hundreds of years old, been there for god knows how long. With a great triangular strip of ground, it grew in the middle and these houses ran down there. There was about five houses on each angle. Old stone houses with thatched roofs.
The Council there had occasion one time to dig up this green, put a trench across it and we kids of the village were in our element. We went down there, and I know I bore in triumph home to my mother a human skull, minus the bottom jaw, but it had the top jaw in with the teeth, and Gilbert he had a leg bone, finger bones and that sort of thing. We thought they were great. Mother chased us out of the house, threatened she'd damn well tan our backsides if we didn't take them back and put them where we got them. Anyway we took them back, we didn't like doing it but we had to. Took them back there and there was a great stack of them; skulls, leg bones, thigh bones, anything you could mention, it was all piled there in a heap. The story went around that it had been a battlefield a couple of hundred years ago, but I think more than likely it could have been an old grave yard, I don't know Geoff. Anyway, the bones were all decently re-interred into a fresh spot. But I'll never forget that, all these white bones, all sorts.
Well these old thatched cottages, well that's where I think the Millers lived, down there that was the bottom end of Higham [Ferrers] . But as I say, I was so young when I lived in Higham, when we left there I was barely 8……so my memory of things is not really brilliant and the relations, I do know Geoff that in Higham, practically every second person that we met was a cousin or a relative by marriage of some kind, there was dozens of them there. But I never met I was too young to know and even to be interested. ...................................

Ann married Alfred BLACKWELL [1295], son of John BLACKWELL [1319] and Ruth CLARKE [1318], on 25 Dec 1864 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England. Alfred was born on 2 Mar 1840 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, was christened on 16 Aug 1840 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, and died on 26 Apr 1917 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England at age 77.

General Notes: Christened under the surname Black.

At the 1841 Census, Alfred was living at High Street Higham Ferrers, and in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census he was still living in High Street, Higham Ferrers. His occupation was given as shoemaker. On the 1911 Census, Alfred and Ann advised that they had 9 children, 2 of whom were deceased. We only had 7 children recorded, however I have since found Ralph's birth and death. The 9th child still has not been identified.

Beatrice, Ada and Ralph were all christened at Higham Ferrers on 19 Aug 1878 according to the Family Search website.

Witnesses to the marriage of Alfred and Ann were Charles Blackwell and Sarah Groom. Presumably Charles Blackwell was Alfred's brother, and Sarah Groom may have been a friend of Ann's as Ann's sister Eliza had married an Andrew Groom. In the same quarter and year of the marriage entry of Ann and Alfred, is the marriage of a Sarah Bethia Groom to a George Childs.

The family apparently kept in touch with their son William's late first wife's family because in 1911, almost 20 years after Evangaline died, her brother Edgar John Adams was staying with Alfred and Anne Blackwell at the time of the census. William had already emigrated to Australia by this time.

General Notes: Charles was a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers. Part of the 21st Battalion (tyneside Scottish) and was killed in Action in the Western European Theatre. Formerly 179288 RHA. His regimental number was 48388. It is possible that Charles took part in the 2nd Battle of Arras, also known as the Battle for Vimy Hill. This offensive commenced on the 9th of April 1917 in the area where Charles appears to have been killed on that date.

The Battle of Arras began in a snowstorm on 9th April 1917, when Australian, British, and Canadian Divisions fought on a front from Vimy Ridge in the north (Canadian sector), to the trenches east of Arras (British sector), to Bullecourt in the south (Australian sector). It was hoped that the much-awaited breakthrough might be made here. However, the key purpose of the offensive was to tie down the German army in a joint effort with the French, who were simultaneously attacking on the Chemin des Dames. This latter offensive was a complete and costly failure \ resulting in mutinies among many French divisions.
The Battle of Arras slogged on until mid-May 1917, following a final large-scale attack on 3rd May when casualties were particularly high on the British side. It became the greatest killing battle of the war, with a daily casualty rate even higher than the Somme.

Only an estimated 30% - 40% of the WW1 British military service records have survived due to being destroyed by fire during Second World War bombings, and sadly Charles record appears to be in the 60%- 70% that have been lost.

Roclincourt Valley Cemetery lies to the north-east of the village. It is on a farm track signposted off the Thelus road.
Historical Information: Roclincourt was just within the Allied lines before the Battle of Arras in 1917 and it was from here that the 51st (Highland) and 34th Divisions advanced on 9 April 1917. The 1st Canadian Division attacked further north, across the Lens road. Roclincourt Valley Cemetery (originally called Roclincourt Forward Cemetery No.2) was begun after 9 April 1917 by the units which fought on that day. It was used until the following August when it contained the graves of 94 soldiers, of whom 40 belonged to the 51st Division. These form Plot I, Rows A to E and part of Row F. The cemetery was enlarged after the Armistice when graves, almost all of April 1917 and mostly from the 34th and 51st Divisions, were brought in from the surrounding battlefields and from certain smaller cemeteries, including:- KING CRATER CEMETERY, ROCLINCOURT: a mine crater, it contained 99 burials in five big graves, made by the 34th Division in the middle of April 1917, all dating from 9 April. All but two belonged to the Tyneside Brigades of the Northumberland Fusiliers. KITE CRATER CEMETERY, ST LAURENT-BLANGY, contained 53 burials of 9 April 1917 in five big graves, mainly of the 34th Division. RABS ROAD CEMETERY, ST LAURENT-BLANGY, contained 20 burials of 9 or 13 April 1917, 16 belonging to the 15th or 16th Royal Scots. ROCLINCOURT LONG CEMETERY (called at one time Roclincourt Forward Cemetery No.3), contained 68 burials of 9 April 1917, all 51st Division. THELUS ROAD CEMETERY, ROCLINCOURT, was made by the XVII Corps and contained 42 burials of 9 April 1917, 51st Division. The cemetery now contains 518 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 83 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to four casualties known, or believed, to be buried among them. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. (information from Commonwealth War Graves Commission).

General Notes: William married Evangaline Adams at the Regent Square Wesleyan Chapel by William Johnson. The witnesses to the marriage were Henry Garwood and Beatrice Adams.

William then married Primrose Darlow at St Andrews Church in Kettering by Frederic Llewellyn Dean. Witnesses to the marriage were William Darlow and Sarah Darlow.

At the 1871 and 1881 Census William was living at High Street Higham Ferrers. His occupation in 1881 was given as a shoe clicker. Shoemaker

William left England around 1909 on the ship Arawa and travelled to Melbourne, Vic, Australia, where he found work and earned enough money to send for his family about 2 years later.

Ada Primrose left England on 9 October 1911 on the Ship Demosthenes on a 54 day voyage to Melbourne, Vic, Australia, to meet her husband. With her were her step daughter, Inez, 19, and children Doris 15, Gilbert 14, Bernie 11, Vincent (Toby) 9, Ethel 8, Douglas 6, and Phyllis 3.

William met his family in Melbourne. He was share farming at Allambee at the time. As there was no work at Allambee for Inez, she remained in Melbourne. The remainder of the family travelled to Allambee with William. Some time later, William was seriously ghoured by a bull at Allambee and was unable to return to work on the farm, so after approximately 2 years at Allambee, the family moved to Nar Nar Goon, Vic, Australia, were William opened a boot makers shop. Robert Bernard Blackwell recounted how Allambee was totally covered by huge redgums and the family would lie in bed at night and hear the trees cracking and falling down in bad weather. One of the jobs on the farm was to clear the gum trees.

Inez had a dispute with her step mother a few years later and was never seen or heard from by the family again. I was finally able to trace Inez in early 2012.

Noted events in his life were:

• In 1871 he resided at High Street in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England.

• In 1881 he resided at High Street in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England.

• He worked as a shoe operator in 1891.

• In 1891 he resided at and his first wife Evangaline were a lodgers at Walnut Tree Road in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England.

• He worked as a shoe sole sewer in 1901.

• In 1901 he resided at 8 Kimbolton Road in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England.

• He worked as a bootmaker from 1914 to 1953.

• He had a residence from 1914 to 1953 in Nar Nar Goon, Vic, Australia.

William married Evangeline ADAMS [1296], daughter of Frederick Augustus ADAMS [1320] and Sarah ALLEN [6642], on 5 Oct 1890 in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. Evangeline was born on 21 Mar 1867 in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire, England, was christened on 18 May 1879 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, and died on 17 May 1892 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England at age 25.

General Notes: Evangaline's father's occupation was given as grocer on her birth certificate and on her marriage certificate his occupation was given as railway guard.

It is possible that Evangeline was raised by her Aunt and Uncle Thomas and Maria Draper. There is an Eva Adams in the 1871 Eva Adams is said to be a "visitor" and 1881 census she is recorded as "niece" and is living with the Drapers at 3 High Street, Higham Ferrers. Both the Drapers worked in the shoe industry. The age and place of birth matches that given in the 1891 census after Evangeline married William Blackwell.

In 1891 William and Evangaline were boarding with Thomas and Maria Draper and Maria's father David Allen was also living at the same address. This proves that Eva Adams, who had lived with the Drapers since she was at least 4 years of age, is the correct person, and that Ann Maria (Maria ) Draper was Ann Maria Allen, the sister of Evangeline's mother Sarah Allen.

Witnesses to Evangaline and Willliam's marriage were Beatrice Adams and Henry Garwood. Maria Beatrice also recorded as Beatrice Maria Adams was Evangaline's sister who later married Henry Garwood in 1891.

In 1871, Eva's mother, Sarah, was living with her parents and there is no mention of her husband Frederick Adams. She has two children living with her at this time the youngest is Beatrice who was 4 months old at that time. In 1881 Frederick Adams living in Nottinghamshire, occupation is pilot guard (rail). At the same census there is a housekeeper, Ann Wallis and her son Augustus Wallis and 10 children recorded with the surname Adams. All are listed as Frederick's sons and daughters. These 10 children include the two who had been living with Sarah in 1871, but there is no mention of a wife, although Frederick's marital status is recorded as married and the youngest child recorded is only 2 years of age. I have found a Sarah Adams who died in 1879 in Shardlow, Derbyshire.

I have now discovered that Eva's father Frederick Augustus Adams married Sarah Allen and they had 6 children of which Evangaline was the eldest. Sarah died when her youngest child was about 1 year old, in 1879. One year later, in 1880, Frederick married a widow, Elizabeth Fritchley (Choulenter) who had 6 children of her own, including a set of twins. It is possible that within a year of their marriage Elizabeth was placed in a lunatic asylum and that is why Frederick had a housekeeper to assist with the children. By 1891, Elizabeth is living with her husband and family at Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire, England. In 1901 Elizabeth is staying with her daughter Ellen Jane Wheeldon (Fritchley) in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England. I have been unable to find Frederic Augustus Adams in the 1901 census. Frederick is listed as a widow at the 1911 Census and he is living with his son Frederick Allen Adams in Dukinfield, Lancashire, England.

It would appear that Sarah's sister Maria Draper took charge of Evangaline's upbringing before 1871. It appears that Thomas and Maria Draper had no children of their own.

The child from this marriage was:

+ 114 F    i. Inez Beatrice BLACKWELL [1555] was born on 18 Jul 1891 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, died on 16 Apr 1979 in Ryde, NSW, Australia at age 87, and was cremated on 18 Apr 1979 in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Inez married Eric Wilfred WILLIAMS [4023] (d. 8 Jan 1928) on 2 Jun 1923 in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

William next married Ada Primrose DARLOW [1282], daughter of William DARLOW [1293] and Sarah HOLLAND [1292], on 21 Dec 1893 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England. Ada was born on 5 Mar 1874 in Dearnley Wuerdle, Lancashire, England, was christened on 10 May 1874 in Rochdale, , Lancashire, England, died on 29 Apr 1942 in Pakenham, Vic, Australia at age 68, and was buried on 30 Apr 1942 in Pakenham, Vic, Australia. Other names for Ada were Primrose BLACKWELL and Primrose DARLOW.

General Notes: Whilst her birth was registered as Ada, she was christened Primrose, and was always known as Primrose, she was born at Dearnley Wuerdle, in the sub district of Wuerdle and Wardle, Registration district of Rochdale, County of Lancaster. Wardle is a village within the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies amongst the foothills of the South Pennines, 1.8 miles (2.9 km) east-southeast of Whitworth, 2.5 miles (4 km) north-northwest of Rochdale and 12 miles (19 km) north-northeast of the city of Manchester.

Wardle is historically a part of Lancashire, The name Wardle is said to be derived from "Ward Hill", implying "fortified place". Brown Wardle Hill overlooks the village from the north, its name being derived from the Celtic word bron meaning "round".

Wardle, the most northerly settlement in Greater Manchester, encompasses small parts of Smallbridge and Dearnley urban areas contiguous with Rochdale. Lying within the historic county boundaries of Lancashire since the early 12th century, Wardle was anciently linked with Wuerdle, and lay within the township of Hundersfield and parish of Rochdale. Wuerdle and Wardle would later split from Hundersfield to form a township of itself, still within the parish of Rochdale and in the hundred of Salford.

Primrose was christened at St John the Baptist Church in Smallbridge in 1874, the same day as all her siblings other than the youngest who was not born until 1878

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Smallbridge like this:

"SMALLBRIDGE, a village and a chapelry in Rochdale parish, Lancashire. The village stands on the river Roch, 2 miles NE of Rochdale r. station; and has a post-office under Rochdale, and numerous factories. The chapelry was constituted in 1844, and curtailed in 1867. Rated property, within the original limits, about £15,000. Pop. in 1861, of the original chapelry, 5,644; of the chapelry as curtailed in 1867, 3,554. The property is much subdivided. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Manchester. Value, £425.* Patron, the Vicar of Rochdale. The church is good; and there are chapels for Independents and Methodists, and a national school."

It appears that Primrose's parents moved to Lancashire after the 1871 Census. It has recently been found that there was another sibling Charles Henry Darlow, (not known to us until 2013) who was also born in Lancashire in 1872 and died and was buried in Lancashire in 1875. In 1878, the youngest child of William and Sarah Darlow was born in Northamptonshire so presumably they returned to Kettering between 1875 and 1878.

In the 1881 Census Primrose was living at Bridwell Lane Kettering and her occupation was scholar, with place of birth given as Burnley, Lancashire.

At the 1891 Census Primrose was living at 12 Eden Street, Kettering and her occupation was dressmaker with place of birth recorded as Rochdale Lancashire.

At the 1911 census, Primrose was the head of the house, as William was in Australia. She was living at 6 Upper Street, Kettering, and her occupation was given as shoe trade Eyeleter.

Primrose left England on 9 October 1911 on the Ship Demosthenes on a 54 day voyage to Melbourne to meet her husband. With her were her step daughter, Inez 19, and children Doris 15, Gilbert 14, Bernie 11, Vincent 9, Ethel 8, Douglas 6, and Phyllis 3.

William met the family in Melbourne. He was share farming at Allambee at the time. As there was no work at Allambee for Inez she remained in Melbourne. The remainder of the family travelled to Allambee. Some time later, William was seriously ghoured by a bull and was unable to return to work on the farm, so after approximately 2 years at Allambee, the family moved to Nar Nar Goon where William opened a bootmakers shop.

Noted events in her life were:

• She had a residence in 1874 in Dearnley Wuerdle, Lancashire, England.

• In 1911 she resided at 6 Upper Street, in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England.

• She had a residence in 1942 in Nar Nar Goon, Vic, Australia.

114. Inez Beatrice BLACKWELL [1555] (William BLACKWELL6, Ann MILLER5, John MILLER4, Hepzibah PARKER3, Hannah WYMAN2, Richard1) was born on 18 Jul 1891 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, died on 16 Apr 1979 in Ryde, NSW, Australia at age 87, and was cremated on 18 Apr 1979 in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

General Notes: On arrival from England, Inez remained in Melbourne as there was no work at Allambee for her. She worked for a Church of England Minister at Malvern. She travelled to Nar Nar Goon from time to time to visit her family. Apparently, Inez's stepmother was very hard on her. One day whilst Inez was visiting her family at Nar Nar Goon, Inez and Ada Primrose had an argument and Inez left.

Inez returned home once and was greeted in an unfriendly manner on the doorstep by one of her half sisters and had an argument with her step mother. At this she turned on her heel and left. By the time her brother went after her, there was no sign of her and she never contacted her family again.

Despite exhaustive searching for details no trace or Inez had ever been found and the family thought it possible that Inez returned to England, however no-one knew for sure.

In January 2012 I decided to renew the search for Inez and found her in the electoral rolls in 1919 living at 10 Kent Street, Kew, Victoria. Her occupation was listed as confectioners assistant. I then found a marriage of an Inez B Blackwell to Eric W Williams in Sydney, NSW and decided to apply for the marriage certificate. I did a search of the electoral rolls and Inez Beatrice Williams lived at "Kianinni, Cornelia Street, Punchbowl from approximately 1931 although was unable to find that her husband Eric was living at the same address at any time from 1931 onwards. In 1943 her address was listed as 43 Cornelia Street Punchbowl and the address remains consistent until 1968. I searched deaths from 1968 and found the death of Inez Williams in 1979 in NSW and her parents are listed as William and Evangeline. So after all these years we have finally located the missing Inez. Inez husband died after only a few years of marriage and they had no children.

Marriage and death certificates arrived on 16 January 2012. The marriage certificate states that Eric was a Commercial Traveller who lived at Gordon, and that Inez normal occupation was home duties and she was living at Wentworth Falls at the time of the marriage. They were married at St James Church of England in Sydney and the witnesses to the marriage were William H Willington and W Willington.

Inez died in a nursing home at Aurolus Street, Ryde. Her marital status on the death certificate is given as widow, and she was cremated at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium in Sydney.

There was a death notice placed in The Sydney Morning Herald on 19 of April 1979 from her dearly loved friends, Shirley and Bill and nana to Jill and Sharon. The notice says she was privately cremated. I contacted the crematorium where Inez was said to have been cremated, but they could find no record of her cremation.

Inez married Eric Wilfred WILLIAMS [4023], son of Arthur John WILLIAMS [4053] and Alice Louisa MALLARD [4052], on 2 Jun 1923 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Eric was born in Mar 1889 in Birmingham, England and died on 8 Jan 1928 in Cantebury, NSW, Australia at age 38. They had no children.

Death of Mr G D Blackwell
Mr Gilbert Darlow Blackwell who passed away in the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital on August 26th after suffering from poor health over the past 12 months, was an old Near Nar Goon Resident.

He was the eldest son of the Late Mr. William Blackwell, who conducted a boot and repair shop in Mulcare Street, Nar Nar Goon for very many years.

Gilbert Blackwell was born at Kettering, Northamptonshire, In England in 1895, and migrated to Australia with his parents and brothers and sisters at the age of 15 years, arriving in Australia in 1910. [actually December 1911].

The family took up farming at Allambee in South Gippsland till 1912 and then moved to Nar Nar Goon, where Mr William Blackwell purchased the boot business.

Gilbert worked at various occupations (farm work etc.) around Nar Nar Goon until the out-break of war in 1914, when he enlisted in the A.I.F. and served with the 4th Vickers Machine Gun Battalion in France for the full period to the end of the War in 1918.

His greatest love was his Church, and he was very acive in the Church of Christ in North Road, Ormond, from 1922 till his death. He served in every conceivable way - Sunday School teacher, Bible classes, secretary, superintendent - he was indeed a very Christian man which was shown by the huge attendance at the Church service and the wonderful tributes paid him by the Minister.

General Notes: Christened at St Andrews Church, Kettering.

Douglas and his brother Paul married cousins, Theadora Morgan-Dawes and Alma Rose Dawes. Douglas and Dora lived in Dandenong for a short time after their marriage, but later moved to 52 Garfield Road, Garfield to the home of Dora's parents Alfred Dawes and the Morgan sisters to look after them in their old age. They probably had at least 2 children when they returned to Garfield, D. Geoff was born in the house at Garfield so they were certainly living in Garfield by 1933. Dora inherited the house at Garfield when her father died.

According to Douglas's brothers and those that knew him, he was a very intelligent man who was very good at fixing things and working things out. One of the Weatherhead's used to say that Douglas was the cleverest person he had ever met.

In 1937 Dora was expecting her 5th child and her health was not good. Douglas and Dora decided to hire a housekeeper in the short term to assist with domestic duties. They hired Cecilia Ryan, mother of the infamous Ronald Ryan. Pearl Madden recounted a story of the time when Cecilia's Husband Jack came to the house at 52 Garfield Road, Garfield and knocked on the front door asking to talk to his wife. Mrs Ryan did not want to talk to her husband, but he forced his way into the house and, armed with a bread knife, chased Cecilia around the kitchen table trying to stab her and shouting abuse. Pearl Blackwell grabbed her 2 younger brothers, Cliff and D. Geoff and run to the bedroom where the children hid under the bed until the commotion died down. I am uncertain if the police were called or if Jack Ryan simply calmed down and left. Allan Blackwell was born in 25 September 1937 and it is thought that Mrs Ryan left Garfield sometime after that time.

Douglas was blinded in one eye following a childhood accident. He was a dragline/dredge operator and during WW2 he worked for the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and lived and worked away from home a great deal of the time. He began work at the State Rivers in approximately 1935 and was employed for 1 1/2 years as Fireman on Steam Boilers and then as Operator in charge of Caterpillar Diesel Engine Excavator. In 1939 Douglas began a correspondence course with the "International Correspondence School (A/sia) Pty Ltd. The course was on Diesel engine maintenance and repair which he continued until his death in 1942. There are many "percentage Certificate"s for this course and the lowest mark he ever obtained was 96% which was on the first paper he completed.

In October 1940 Douglas was working at Wodonga, on the Hume Weir. He joined the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen's Association of NSW and had been a member of that Union's Victorian Branch up until 12 October 1940. His last letter to Dora from Wodonga was dated December 5 1940. In March 1941, Mr F Honeychurch of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission at Koo-Wee-Rup wrote to Douglas offering him a position as a second Machine operator. It is assumed that Douglas took up this offer as there is a letter dated 23 December 1941 from the SR & WSC, East Melbourne, Koo-Wee-Rup branch signed by the District Officer introducing Douglas to the Captain Superintendent of Training at the Flinders Naval Depot at Crib Point (now known as Cerberus) and another letter dated 1942 from the Department of Defence, Flinders Naval Depot in the form of a Pass in and out of the depot. There is a letter from Douglas to Dora from the Flinders Naval Base is dated Jan 10th (1942). His next letter is c/- the Country Roads Board and is almost certainly sent from Fulham where he worked for a time. His letters continue to say c/- CRB until May 11th, 1942, when the heading changes back to SR&WS, and the location changes to Sale. He was working on the sewerage system in the area. After the Sewerage was completed it is thought that Douglas worked on a project at the Sale RAAF Station as there is a Special Pass dated 6 July 1942 for the hours of 0730 -1800 hours daily for the purposes of working.

There are several references in Douglas's letters to Dora to Sid Black and his wife. Sid Black was a Power Shovel Driver who also worked for the State Rivers and in 1942 was living at 77 Stawell Street, Sale. Douglas sometimes stayed with Sid when he returned to Sale from home at Garfield and then went out the works camp at Sale the following day. Sid's wife sometimes forwarded Douglas's pay to Dora. It is thought Sid's wife's name was Sheila.

There is an enlistment record on the National Archives of Australia website for the Allied Works Council, Civil Construction Corps Register noting Douglas's enrolment to serve from 4 June 1942 as a Drag Line Operator. The records states that Douglas was 5 feet 6" tall and weighed 9 stone 5 lbs. It noted that he had a weak right eye and on 11 September 1942 was ex State Rivers Sale to Brisbane. Under the general remarks section it states 17/9/1942. Wire from Brisbane re destination (see file Maries) deceased see file ....eligible for 2 days service leave.

On the 3rd of September 1942 Douglas received a letter from the SR&WSC Melbourne advising that the Allied Works Council was considering sending operators from Machine No's 21 and 27 to North Queensland and asking if Douglas would be interested in travelling up to his machine. His reply is unknown, but his next letter to Dora dated September 13th is from Brisbane. He spent some time at the Allied Works Camp at Chernside in Brisbane.

He left Brisbane to travel to Townsville on the evening of 1 October 1942 and arrived in Townsville at lunchtime on the 3rd of October and were sent out to "The Black River Camp" about 12 miles out of Townsville on the 5th of October. When he arrived at the camp he decided to try to locate the machines he was supposed to be operating. He found the machines at the Main Roads Camp and was upset to find that they had any number of operators for the machines and felt that his trip to Townsville was a wasted one so he went and spoke to the Engineer. The engineer advised that he would have "them" (Douglas & Frederick Ernest Maries of Shepparton) sent back to Melbourne. Douglas's last letter to Dora from the was dated October 7 1942. His service number was CV26213.

Douglas was in his tent at the Bohle River Civil Construction Corps Camp on the evening of the 9th of October 1942. He and his tent mate Frederick Ernest Maries were to leave the camp to return to Melbourne on the 10th of October. At around 6pm on the 9th, a blast went off from the nearby quarry. Maries was standing at the door of the tent watching the blasting and talking to Douglas about it, and when he did not receive a response from Douglas he turned around and saw Douglas lying on his stretcher with a wound to his head. He got help and an ambulance took Douglas to the Townsville General Hospital, but he died from his injuries at around 4.30 am on the 13th of October 1942.

The Bohle River Civil Construction Corps Camp where Douglas was staying was in close proximity to a quarry where blasting was undertaken on a regular basis. It appears that for some time there had been problems with stones from the blasting flying into the camp area and the powder monkey had reduced the charge to try to stop this happening, and discussions had also been held on moving the camp. According to the "powder monkey", Mr Arthur Hill, the camp and quarry were only about 150 yards apart as the crow flies. The powder monkey allowed 15 minutes prior to lighting the fuse and word of mouth and a whistle sounding was used as a warning of the impending blast. The police officer who attended the scene, Arthur Vincent Moylan advised that the tent in which Douglas was located was about 300 yards from No 1 quarry. The stone that was picked up near the tent was weighed and found to be 2lbs 3 ozs. This is thought to be the stone that hit Douglas in the head and caused the holes in the tent.

Dora received a telegram notifying her of Douglas's death. A second telegram was said to have been sent requesting Dora's decision as to whether Douglas's body was to be shipped back to Victoria for burial or whether he should be buried in Townsville. Dora never received this telegram and consequently the authorities buried Douglas in an unmarked grave in the Townsville cemetery. The existence of this telegram is quite uncertain, particularly in view of the fact that McKimmins Undertakers of Townsville buried Douglas at the New Cemetery in West Townsville on the 14th of October, the day after he died. Mr James Henry Joseph Kelly, the Officer in charge of personnel of the Allied Works Camp in Townsville advised that he sent at least three separate telegrams, to the Police at Garfield, the Deputy Director of Personnel in Melbourne and the Assistant Director of Personnel in Brisbane.

Ironically, all of Douglas's brothers served during WW2 and all survived, but Douglas who was in the Civil Construction Corp was killed.

Many years later, family friends, Hector and Jessie Elliot of Pakenham travelled to Townsville and Hector constructed a concrete headstone at Douglas's grave. His wife Dora was expecting her 7th child when he died. In 1963 Theadora Fenn (Blackwell) paid the Townsville Cemetery Trust to purchase the plot at the Townsville cemetery where Douglas was buried. She paid 10 pounds for the grave number 3, allotment 387, section F, and 2 pounds 2 shillings for the permit fee. This may have been to allow the headstone to be legally constructed, although this is uncertain.

Noted events in his life were:

• He worked as a Dredge operator.

• From circa 1931 to 1942 he resided at Government Road (later called Garfield Road) in Garfield, Vic, Australia.

Douglas married Theadora MORGAN DAWES [241], daughter of Alfred Thomas DAWES [1278] and Frances Mary Ann MORGAN [1288], on 1 May 1926 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Theadora was born on 1 Jan 1906 in Iona, Vic, Australia, died on 21 May 1979 in Warragul, Vic, Australia at age 73, and was buried on 23 May 1979 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Other names for Theadora were Dora BLACKWELL, Dora DAWES, Theadora DAWES, and Dora FENN.

General Notes: Birth registered as Morgan. Always known as Dora.

Dora lived at Iona with her family and started school at the Iona State School in about 1913. They lived about 1/2 a mile from the Iona Post Office. They moved to Garfield in about 1916 and she attended Garfield State School Number 2724 until at least 1919.

After Dora and Douglas married, the lived in Dandenong for a short time, but returned to the Dawes family home where Douglas and Dora lived at home with her parents and cared for them until their deaths. She continued to live in the house that her father built, at 52 Garfield Road following her marriage and until her death in 1979. Her son, D Geoff, was born in that house in 1933. This house was sold following the death of Dora in 1979 and has since been renovated and sold several times. The original property was several acres, but part of the land was sold separately to Ken Towt, Dora's son-in-law. This piece of land was sold and a house was later constructed on it. Dora's house was situated at 52 Garfield Road Garfield, her son Geoff's house at what is now 46 Garfield Road, Garfield, Cliff's house at 42 Garfield Road, Garfield, Pearl's across the road on the corner of Barkers Road, and Garfield Road, and Beryl's later homes were in Archer Road in Garfield. Pax lived in Beaconsfield, Eve in Warragul and Alan at Beaconsfield, Upper Pakenham, and later in Drouin, whilst Geoff moved to Wonthaggi in 1973, he has continued to own the house at Garfield as well.

Dora was very family oriented and her home was always the hub of family visits, by both the Dawes and Blackwell families. Even after the death of her husband Douglas, Dora and the Blackwell family kept in touch with each other.

According to the book "The Hanged Man: The life and Death of Ronald Ryan by Mike Richards, published by Scribe Publications Melbourne in 2002, Cecilia had a son George b. 1915 by her first husband, George Thompson, she and George Thompson separated and she lived with John Ronald Ryan, known as Jack who was the father of Ronald, b. 1925, Violet b. 1927 and Irma b. 1929. Cecilia and Jack married in 1929 and Gloria was born in 1931.

Jack and Cecilia were both alcoholics and Jack was prone to bouts of violence whilst drunk and the children were neglected. Ronald was taken into care in late in 1936 and the 3 girls were taken into care in June 1937.

Following is an excerpt from the book from pages 25 and 26:-

"After losing all her children [Ron, Gloria, Irma and Violet] to wardships, Cecilia [Ryan] made a brave attempt to improve her situation. She had left Jack [Ryan] at Mitcham and taken a position as housekeeper with Douglas and Theadora Blackwell and their family at Garfield in Gippsland on the Princes Highway, some 80 miles south east of Melbourne. Cecilia moved back to Melbourne, where she took a further position as housekeeper for a man named Croaker living at 29 Park Street, Abbotsford. With her living conditions thus improved, Cecilia sought to have her children returned to her, as she had first done whilst at Garfield. In a plaintive letter to the secretary of the Children's Welfare Department, John Henry, Cecilia pointed out that Croaker was willing for her to have all her children with her, as she had been 'caring for his four little children so well':

Mr Croaker here has plenty of furniture and accommodation and as it is better for me to be earning my keep here and having the use of everything I thought I would write and ask if you would please let me have my children now. If not all of them at once surely you will give me little Gloria as she has such a terrible time with abscesses and I know it is only through fretting over me and she will never be well until you let her come to me.

I am away from my husband and got a good position and home and can give you good references from both the people I worked for at Gippsland and this man here to say how well I looked after both homes and children during the mother's absence........"

Mrs Ryan gave Dora and Douglas Blackwell a photograph of herself, Jack, George, Irma, Violet and Gloria, taken prior to the 3 girls being taken into care. This photograph and copies of it are still in the possession of the Blackwell family, with a note on the back about the bread knife incident written by Pearl Madden (nee Blackwell).

Dora was a very good seamstress, making many garments for her grandchildren. She also sewed, knitted and crocheted toys for her grandchildren as well as booties and baby clothes. She made picture scrap books that she gave away as presents.

She collected salt and pepper shakers for many many years, and her collection was divided amongst her 7 children when she died in 1979. She also collected small bottles. This collection was inherited by her granddaughter Coral Jones (Blackwell) who has continued the collection.

She was referred to as Nanna by all her grandchildren.

General Notes: Chris was a happy healthy little boy. At the age of about 4 years he was visiting his Grandmother with his family and had a fall and broke his leg. Unfortunately it took some time for the family to realise that he had also suffered a blow to his head during the fall and had developed a clot on his brain. Doctors at the time advised that he was too young to have an operation and would have to wait until he was 7-8 years old for the clot to be removed. The family followed the doctors advice and the clot was removed when Chris was about 7 years of age. Sadly, he suffered complications and brain damage. He remained at home for many years but as his parents aged they decided it would be best for him to be placed into institutional care. He spent many years at the Janefield Centre, in Melbourne. When this centre was closed he was then placed in residential care in Cranbourne.

Pearl and Jim had their home at Garfield modified to make Chris's visits easier. Chris came home regularly on weekends, and holidays, and was always happy to see the extended family when they visited. He always knew who his older cousins were, and never batted an eyelid when they came in with a new baby, but would always know who that baby was as the years passed, even though he saw them only occasionally.

As his parents health deteriorated it became more and more difficult for him to visit his home and in later years only day visits to his parents home were possible. Whilst he was unable to speak following his operation, he could certainly get his message across. He loved to work in the shed making things, and had a very large collection of keys. His favourite thing to do when he visited home was to watch he Three Stooges and he was extremely fond of sponge cake.

Approximately 10 years before his death he suffered a fractured hip from a fall, and was confined to a wheelchair. His health deteriorated rapidly and he died in 2008, just 2 years after his mother and one year after his father's death.

298 M    ii. Douglas Harold Maxwell BLACKWELL [1326] was born on 12 Mar 1960 in Warragul, Vic, Australia, died on 5 Dec 1988 in Melbourne, Vic, Australia at age 28, and was buried on 8 Dec 1988 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. He never married and had no children.

General Notes: Douglas worked at various occupations on leaving school, including for Smith and Nephew at Wonthaggi and Containers Ltd at Dandenong. He gained employment as a communications technician installing radio equipment and towers for PG Wallace until late 1988. He was living in Glenhuntly, Victoria. He then got a position for another communications firm installing car telephones and the like. He had only been working at the job for two weeks and was on his way to work on his on his motorbike about 2kms from his home when he hit a speed hump in the road and was thrown into a fence. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Alfred Hospital where he remained in a critical condition for one month where he died as a result of his injuries. Douglas did not marry or have any children.

Douglas was the second child and only son of D. Geoff Blackwell and Nancye (Bonham). He lived at Garfield, Victoria, Australia, until he was 14 years old, when his family moved to Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia. Douglas spent some time unemployed after he finished school, and later worked at Smith and Nephew in Wonthaggi and at Containers Limited, a packaging factory in Dandenong, driving from Wonthaggi to Dandenong daily. He moved to Glenhuntly in approximately 1985 where he had obtained a job working for P.G. Wallace and Co, a Prahran based company, who installed, serviced and maintained communications antennas. He worked all over Victoria installing these towers, but most of the work was carried out in the Melbourne area.

Douglas was an early adopter of computer technology and was adept at computer programming. He was also an amateur (ham) radio operator and enthusiast. He assisted in the early stages of organising and installing equipment for the formation of a local radio Station in the South Gippsland area, now known as 3MFM. He was undertaking a course in electronics at the Swinburne Institute of Technology.

The Rialto Towers (often The Rialto) is the second-tallest reinforced concrete building and the tallest office building in the southern hemisphere, when measured to its roof (several other skyscrapers in Australia are taller if their spires are included, as are some other structured in Australia such as communications masts and observation towers). The building is located at 525 Collins Street, in the western side of the central business district of Melbourne, Australia.

The Rialto Towers featured Melbourne's first skyscraper public observation deck which operated between 1994 and 31 December 2009 It was also the location of Melbourne's first Tower running event.

At the time of its completion it was the 23rd tallest building in the world and the 2nd tallest outside of the United States (behind First Canadian Place in Toronto, Canada). Construction of the Rialto Towers was completed in 1986.*(Wikipedia Feb 2012)

P G Wallace and Company installed the communications towers on the top of the Rialto building. Douglas, who was initially very unhappy working at height, soon got used to it, and would proudly recount the fact that he and his workmates used to fly paper aeroplanes from the roof of the Rialto building during its construction and the installation of the communications towers.

Douglas left this job with P.G. Wallace and Co in mid 1988 and commenced working for a company called Australnet Communications that installed car telephones that operated from Mount Waverley. This was an infant industry at the time.

In his younger years Douglas played the cornet in the Wonthaggi Citizens Band, and played competition table tennis at Wonthaggi. He also enjoyed archery. As a child and into adulthood he built and flew model planes, eventually branching out into radio controlled equipment including planes, cars and boats. He competitively raced radio controlled sailing boats on the Albert Park Lake in Melbourne.

As children, Douglas and his sisters learned to ride motorbikes, which were ridden at Garfield on Theadora Fenn's land which was about 6 acres.
