Descendants of Richard MORGAN

First Generation

1. Richard MORGAN [3349] was born circa 1806 in England.

General Notes: Richard may have had a brother b. c. 1811 names Thomas and also a carpenter. At the 1841 census there is a Richard Morgan 35 carpenter, Elizabeth , 30 and Thomas Morgan 30 carpenter living in Bethnal Green. These three were said to have NOT been born the Middlesex. There are also two children named Richard Morgan living at the same address, one is aged 12 , the other is aged 6 as well as a Mary Ann aged 10 and Thomas aged 4. There is no indication which children belong to which adults.

Richard married Mary [4062]

The child from this marriage was:

+ 2 M    i. Richard William MORGAN [1290] was born on 10 Sep 1825 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, was christened on 27 Nov 1825 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, died on 20 Jul 1888 in Sydney, NSW, Australia at age 62, and was buried on 23 Jul 1888 in Rookwood, NSW, Australia.

Second Generation (Children)

2. Richard William MORGAN [1290] (Richard1) was born on 10 Sep 1825 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, was christened on 27 Nov 1825 in Stepney, Middlesex, England, died on 20 Jul 1888 in Sydney, NSW, Australia at age 62, and was buried on 23 Jul 1888 in Rookwood, NSW, Australia.

General Notes: Richard and Ann were married at Bethnal Green, the witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Swindon and Elizabeth Swindon.

At the 1851 Census, Richard & Ann lived at 7 Mount Street, Bethnal Green and Richard's occupation was given as Carver. On the birth certificate of Elizabeth Ann, Richard's occupation was given as cabinet carver master.

Richard, Ann and 5 children left South Southampton on 17 February 1858 on board the "Parsee" and arrived in Melbourne on 14 May 1858. They went to Emerald Hill (now known as South Melbourne) on their own assistance on 19 May 1858.

Very little is known of Richard and his older children. Following the death of his wife it is thought that Richard may have kept his 2 older children, whilst the younger children were placed in an orphanage, however this is not certain. When Richard married his occupation was given as carver, and that was also the occupation recorded in the shipping records when he and his family came to Australia. I have now found a Richard Morgan, whose occupation was recorded as wood carver, living in Australia Street, Newtown in Sydney in 1880 (Sydney and New South Wales, Sands Street Index, 1861-1930).

Richard W Morgan died at the Macquarie Street Asylum. First listed as a Government Institution in June 1884 , the Macquarie Street Asylum, Parramatta was formerly known as The Erysipelas Hospital, and "gradually merged into an Asylum for the Infirm and Destitute". The premises had originally been built as stables and barracks for convicts, before being converted into a Military Hospital in 1843. After the Military Hospital closed in 1851, the premises were utilised by The Erysipelas Hospital.

Although functioning primarily as an asylum for infirm and destitute men from 1884, wards for infectious conditions were still maintained and used for cases refused admission to Sydney Hospital, the Macquarie Street Asylum reputed to be "one Hospital whose doors are open to cases of all kinds of disease." The Government Asylums generally included medical wards, and Macquarie Street became the centre for treatment of serious eye conditions, with 342 ophthalmic cases treated at Macquarie Street in 1893. After administrative responsibility for Government Asylums transferred from the Department of Charitable Institutions to Public Health in 1913, Macquarie Street Asylum became known as the State Hospital and Asylum for the Blind and Men of Defective Sight and Senility, Macquarie Street, Parramatta.

Richard W Morgan died of throat cancer and his death certificate shows parents names unknown, occupation unknown and details of marriage also unknown but it is thought that this is the correct Richard as all other Richard Morgan deaths have been ruled out at this stage. His age was given as 60 years on the death certificate, although he would have been 62 at the time of his death. He was buried at the Rookwood Cemetery.

Noted events in his life were:

• On 21 Aug 1909 he resided at 67 Fitzroy Street in Surry Hills, NSW, Australia.

• He worked as a Wood carver.

Richard married Sarah Ann HODGSON [7856], daughter of Benjamin Thomas HODGSON [7859] and Sarah Ann SAY [7858], on 27 Jul 1874 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. Sarah was born in 1854 in Sydney, NSW, Australia, died on 26 Dec 1923 in Sydney, NSW, Australia at age 69, and was buried on 27 Dec 1923 in Waverley, NSW, Australia.

General Notes: Sarah remarried in 1910 to James Curtin a widower with sons, Robert James, Sydney William and John Ernest Curtin.

Sarah's Will states that she had an adopted child, Edith Melville Miller. Edith was the child of Sarah's brother Joseph Thomas Hodgson and his wife Annie (McMullen). Joseph's wife Annie died in 1876 when Edith was only about one year old, so I presume that Sarah and Richard Morgan took the child in at some time after her mother's death. Edith married Isaac Duffy in 1901 and had two children, Olga and Gertrude Duffy. Isaac died in 1905 and Edith later married in 1909 to Leslie John Miller. Edith Melville Miller died in 1950.

General Notes: Occupation on death certificate given as Greengrocer. Said to have married Emily Doherty when he was 44 years of age and had no children.

John married Emily DOHERTY [3639] in 1899 in Vic, Australia. They had no children.

7. Elizabeth Ann MORGAN [1281] (Richard William2, Richard1) was born on 20 Feb 1857 in Bethnal Green, Middlesex, England, died on 17 Oct 1932 in Warragul, Vic, Australia at age 75, and was buried on 18 Oct 1932 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia.

General Notes: Elizabeth Ann MORGAN married Alfred DAWES they had 12 known children

All but the first of these children were registered as DAWES and Charles Edward DAWS.

Very little is known about the family of Richard Morgan and Elizabeth Swindon.

Richard was a wood carver, he married Elizabeth in England and came to Australia, from England in 1858. Elizabeth, died with seven children, when Frances, the youngest had just turned one year old, and in the same year Frances's 7 year old brother died as well. It is thought that Richard, left at least the younger children and they were apparently put into an orphanage or similar, probably somewhere in Melbourne. What happened to the two older children, Richard and Jane is not known. There is a photograph of Jane in later life, but we have no further details of them. Perhaps they went with their father to Sydney, but that is unknown at this time. Richard died of throat cancer in an asylum for the infirm and destitute in Sydney. There was very little information on his death certificate apart from his name and age. The informant new nothing of his marital status, his occupation and any personal details whatsoever.

Frances, the youngest, had one illegitimate child in the Castlemaine area and returned to Melbourne where she had another child. It is uncertain if this child is the child of Alfred Dawes. Frances then moved in with her two sisters, Elizabeth and Louisa, who were living in the Garfield / Iona area, Victoria, Australia, with Alfred Dawes. Each of the three sisters had children to Alfred Dawes over many years, and their surnames were registered as Dawes, Morgan or occasionally Morgan Dawes. All of the children, approximately 28 in total used Dawes as their surname.

Elizabeth married Alfred Thomas DAWES [1278], son of Charles DAWES [1280] and Elizabeth CHANDLER [1279], on 16 Dec 1902 in Melbourne, Vic, Australia. Alfred was born on 19 Aug 1846 in Adelaide, SA, Australia, died on 2 Nov 1936 in Garfield, Vic, Australia at age 90, and was buried on 3 Nov 1936 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia.

General Notes: Farmer, Carpenter

Alfred Dawes known as Alfred Thomas DAWES left Adelaide S.A. at a fairly early age and worked in Victoria for some years on the Mitchell property (Dame Nellie Melba's father). From 1877-1881 he was in S.A. working with his brothers as a carpenter at the Hindley Street business. He returned to Victoria finally settling in Garfield working as a carpenter.

Some of the houses he built still stand in Garfield.
A house in Main Street Garfield, number 36 was built by Alfred in memory of his son Gladstone (mother Louisa) who was killed in France during World War 1, this house was named Pozieres' Cottage by Alfred and was next door to the Garfield Post Office. Sadly the house was destroyed by fire, in May 1996. There is also a house at 10 Garfield Road, Garfield that is thought to have been built by Alfred and was owned for many years by the Little family.

The Dawes family home was at 52 Garfield Road Garfield and this home still stands to date. Originally there were several acres of land with the house, but after the death of Alfred's youngest daughter, Dora in 1979, segments of the land were sold and houses built on them, this included 50 Garfield Road, Garfield.

Alfred had three women living with him. They were sisters, Elizabeth, Louisa and Frances Morgan. He had children with each of these three sisters, around 28 in total plus one step child (mother Frances Mary Ann) and he married Elizabeth, the elder of the three sisters. The youngest of Alfred's (mother Frances Mary Ann) children was Theadora Morgan-Dawes who lived with her parents at 52 Garfield Rd. Garfield until they died. It has recently been discovered that Alfred also had a child in Adelaide to a woman named Harriett Elizabeth Gardner. This child, Florence Alice Gardner was born in the Destitute Asylum in Adelaide and Alfred is named as the father in the records of that institution.

The births of the children of the three Morgan sisters where registered variously, as Dawes, Morgan, Morgan Dawes, but all children were raised with the surname of Dawes.

Alfred married Elizabeth Morgan at 448 Queen Street Melbourne by Albert James Abbott. Witnesses to the marriage were James Holt and Annie Holt.

In July 1916 he was wounded in action and in 1917 he was absent without leave several times and was also charged with drunkenness and resisting arrest on one of these occasions. He was sent back to England as he was in early in 1918.

Ribemont is in the Department of the Somme, about 8 kilometres south-west of Albert. The Communal Cemetery is a little north of the village, on the west side of the road to Baizieux; and the Extension is on the south-west side of the Communal Cemetery.
Historical Information: This sector of the front was taken over by the Commonwealth forces in the early summer of 1915, when Mericourt-Ribemont Station, on the railway line from Amiens to Albert, became a railhead. However, it was not until the German advance at the end of March 1918 that the first burials were made at Ribemont, initially in the communal cemetery itself. The extension was begun in May and used until August 1918, when 68 burials were carried out by units engaged in the defence of Amiens. It was greatly enlarged after the Armistice when graves were brought in from the battlefields of 1918 east of Ribemont and from other cemeteries, including:- HEILLY BRITISH CEMETERY No.2 (so called in relation to Heilly Station Cemetery), which was in the grounds of Heilly Chateau. It was made by units in April-August 1918, and it contained the graves of 79 soldiers from Australia and 24 from the United Kingdom. HENENCOURT WOOD CEMETERY, was about 800 metres West of Henencourt, in the Wood. It was used by units and Field Ambulances from June 1916 to August 1918, and it contained the graves of 71 soldiers from the United Kingdom, 34 from Australia, one from Canada, one from South Africa, and one of an unknown unit. HENENCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY contained one British grave and one Australian, and the Extension 26 British and nine Australian, all of 1918. POINT 106 BRITISH CEMETERY, BRESLE, nearly 1.6 kilometres North-West of Bresle village, contained 25 graves of March-May 1918, 24 Australian and one British. In 1929, the burials in the communal cemetery were also moved into the extension. The extension now contains 498 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 36 of the burials are unidentified and there are special memorials to two soldiers whose graves in the communal cemetery could not be found, and to 16 buried in other concentrated cemeteries whose graves were destroyed in later battles. The extension was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

General Notes: Frances Mary Ann MORGAN did not marry. She had two children to an unknown father and five known children to Alfred DAWES, although her second child may have been Alfred Dawes's child.

These children were all raised with the surname of DAWES although their births were all registered as MORGAN.

• He worked as a butcher in 1900-1973 in Vic, Australia.

Francis married Mary Eliza STEPHENSON [3361], daughter of John STEPHENSON [5009] and Susannah COOPER [5010], on 14 Apr 1923 in Lilydale, Vic, Australia. Mary was born in 1882 in Lilydale, Vic, Australia and died in 1970 in Croydon, Vic, Australia at age 88.

Children from this marriage were:

36. Hilda Maud MORGAN DAWES [1841] (Frances Mary Ann MORGAN3, Richard William2, Richard1) was born on 23 Feb 1888 in Richmond, Vic, Australia, died on 22 Nov 1925 in Warragul, Vic, Australia at age 37, and was buried on 24 Nov 1925 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Other names for Hilda were Hilda DAWES, Maud DAWES, and Maude HILL.

General Notes: surname DAWES.

Hilda married Samuel Abner Simpson Edward HILL [3362], son of Edward Simpson HILL [7117] and Charlotte HILL [7120], on 15 Dec 1909 in Richmond, Vic, Australia. Samuel was born on 15 Dec 1884 in Port Augusta, SA, Australia, died on 30 Jul 1925 in Vic, Australia at age 40, and was buried on 31 Jul 1925 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Another name for Samuel was Abner HILL.

General Notes: In 1924 the Hill's were living in Tooradin, Victoria, Australia. Abner's father is listed as postmaster at Tooradin in the electoral roll of that year.

Abner died intestate and his furniture and effects were valued at £22 5s 6p on 11 February 1926 when probate was granted. The probate documents state that Edward John Abner Hill was in the care of Mrs R Lush of Yarragon, and the other three children were in the care of their grandfather Edward Hill at this time, however it is known that the children had been in the care of Alfred Dawes and the Morgan sisters at the time of Hilda Maude's death in November 1925 and that their paternal grandfather, Edward Hill came and took the children away, despite their father's express verbal wishes that the children not be given into the custody of his father.

It is thought that Edward Hill put the children into an orphanage shortly afterwards. Many years later when Dora Dawes tracked down her nieces and nephews and visited them, they asked why the Dawes's hadn't come to the orphanage to collect them. Dora explained to them that the Dawes family had no idea where the Hill children went after they were taken from the Dawes family by their paternal grandfather.

Another name for Walter was Wally DAWES.

General Notes: Walter (Wally) Dawes, a carpenter, of Iona, Victoria, Australia, enlisted at Warragul on the 20th of December 1915, and was later re-examined in Melbourne on the 18th January 1916. His service number was 4093. He was allocated to the 10/22 Reinforcements at Broadmeadows and embarked from Australia on 7 March 1916, however the name of the ship he left on is not recorded in his service record. I have found the ships name on the Australian War Memorial Website recorded as the HMAT Wiltshire. He travelled to Moascar, Egypt, where he was taken on strength from the 10/22 reinforcements to the 5th Cyclists Corp at Ferry Post.

The Cyclist Corp is a little known part of Australia's military history.

On the 10th March 1916, the Army circulated a memorandum (No.32) regarding the formation of the cyclist Corp. The Corp was formed in Egypt and was initially made up of volunteers in the 1st and 2nd Divisions and in April 1915 the 4th and 5th Divisions were formed. The Standard issue cycle was made by BSA (Birmingham Small Arms Company). By 1911 the BSA Mark IV model, fitted with a 'coaster' rear hub was in production, (today's equivalent would be like a velodrome bike with fixed hub which meant pedalling all the time) however, the Australian cyclists in Egypt had to persevere with a variety of BSA bicycles ranging from the Mark 1 to the Mark IV. It was not until July 1915 that the Mark IV was introduced, now fitted with hand-operated rear brakes, and a free wheeling hub in place of the coaster hub. Shortly after the Australian cyclists had reached France, this bicycle became the standard issue to cyclist units.

The cyclists were also given Lee Enfield SMLE .303 rifles which they normally slung over their shoulder but bikes were fitted with clips to carry the rifles, as well as straps and clips for the soldiers personal equipment. The units were also equipped with lightweight machine guns.

The 5th Cyclists Btn, of which Wally was a member, was inspected by General Godley on 29 April 1916 and a fortnight later took part in a tactical exercise in the desert in Egypt. On the 24th of May the 5th underwent their first firing practice on a musketry range. By 31 May 1916, the 5th had new rifles able to take high velocity cartridges, however such things as puncture repair kits and spare parts were not so readily available.

On the 16th of June 1916, the cyclists boarded a train which took them to Alexandria, where they embarked to France the next day. According to the book, Cycling to War by Ronald Austin, they arrived in Marseilles on 25 June, however, Wally's service record says he arrived in Marseilles on the 27th of June. After arrival in Marseilles, the Cyclists boarded a troop train and travelled to northern France.

Once they arrived in northern France they were issued with gas masks and instructed on how they were to be worn. On the 1st of July 1916, orders were received regarding the formation of the II Anzac Corp Cyclists Battalion, which was to consist of 1 and 2 companies provided by the New Zealand Cyclists Corp, who were still in Egypt, and the 3 and 5 companies, made up by the 5th Australian Cyclists, of which Wally was a member. The 5th were ordered to remain attached to the 5th Australian Division until the New Zealand cyclists arrived from Egypt. The New Zealand contingent arrived in Marseilles on 17 July 1916. Whilst the 1st and 2nd companies of the II Anzac Corp Cyclists Battalion were made up by the New Zealanders, the 3rd Company was made up from the 5th Cyclists plus a few from the 4th Cyclists. However, the New Zealanders bicycles did not arrive until August 1916, this made training very difficult with the shortage of machines. On the 16th of September the Cyclists moved to the frontline.

The unit patch was a 1 x 1 inch red diamond centred inside a 2 x 2 in white diamond worn on both sleeves. This patch was retained until 1918 when the unit was redesignated the XXII Corp Cyclists Battalion.

During the war the Cyclist Battalion undertook many tasks including, forming guards to escort the Corp Commander, traffic direction, frontline fighting, delivery of dispatches and cable burying. The Cyclists became so proficient at cable burying, they could lay large distances in a short time and eventually became the supervisors of cabling operations. They also provided work parties for various other battalions, including the Royal Engineers and were often attached to other units and battalions.

In October 1916 the II Anzac cyclists, less their bikes were sent to the trenches to fight. They worked with two companies on the line and the third in the support line. They worked on a 4 day rotating roster, 4 days in the trenches, and 4 days on the support line. After a month in the frontline the Cyclists were relieved by another battalion and they returned to Bac St Maur to collect their bicycles and returned to billets just outside of Doulieu.

Cyclists were often sent to other units and from 17 November 1916 to 29 May 1917, Wally was one of 25 Cyclists who was seconded to the Town Major of Armentieres as a fire brigade detail. During this time, on the 11th January 1917, Wally was treated for a septic hand.

In March - May 1917 the Cyclists undertook a large amount of telephone cable burying work. This work was carried out in the open and the Cyclists were vulnerable to enemy shell fire and gas attacks. Cable laying was carried often carried out at night with only natural light so as not to attract attention from the enemy. On completion of the cable work in May the Cyclists were given the task of constructing a track from the support and front lines then across no mans land through the enemies trenches to a point named Middle Farm about 500 yards north from Messines. The aim of the track was to allow horses to easily move up to and through the German trenches. After reconnaissance of the proposed route it was decided to carry out the necessary work at night prior to the main attack being launched. On the morning of the Messines battle, 7 June 1917, several parties were detailed to carry out specific tasks over a distance of 1.7kms. At 2.15am on 7 June, 291 troops and 13 officers cycled from Steenbecque to Hill 63 but en route were forced to don gas masks due to enemy gas shells landing in the area. This delayed their arrival, but the cyclists completed the 1.7 kms of track within 3 hours despite being under fire.

From the 14th of June for three weeks the cyclists were engaged in more cable burying tasks and were occasionally subjected to enemy fire. On the 22nd of June 1917, Wally was hospitalised due to gas. It appears he may have been sent back to England as the service record seems to read Belgravia for his place of hospitalisation. He returned to the Cyclists Battalion on 11 July 1917.

On 30th July 1917 Wally went on leave, returning on 15 August 1917. On 17 November 1918 Wally was detached to the 133 AT Coy until 15 January 1918.

On 1 January 1918 the II Anzac Cycles Corps were renamed the XXII Corps Cyclist Battalion and were to be restructured. The structure finally changed on 16 January with the departure of No 3 which joined the Australian Corp Cyclists. With the departure of the Australians, No 3 Company became a New Zealand Company sub unit.

The Australian Cyclists formed an entirely new unit, the Australian Corps Cyclists Battalion. The new unit was formed mainly from existing I Corps Cyclist Battalion plus a few from the II Corps. As of 1 January 1918 the strength of the Australian Corps Cyclist Battalion stationed at La Creche was 16 officers and 345 other ranks. The new unit could not accommodate all of the No 3 Australian Company so many cyclists were posted to either infantry or artillery units in need of reinforcements.

On the 16th of January 1918 Wally transferred from 22 Corps Cycle Battalion to the Australian Corp Cycle Battalion. He remained with that unit for the remainder of the war.

Wally was demobilised and left England on board the Mahai and returned to Australia in June 1919. He was classed as TPE at discharge.

Like so many of the soldiers who have returned home from war over the years, Wally was changed by his experiences and seems to have had little or no contact with his family following his return to Australia. It is now known that he spent some time in Newry, near Maffra where he probably continued working as a carpenter, as he had before the war. He then moved on to Canberra sometime in the late 1920's or early 1930's. He was living at the Capital Hill Camp in Canberra in 1932. This camp was a tent camp set up to house labourers and tradesmen who were working in Canberra at that time. He later moved to a guest house in Canberra where he spent about 20 years.

Sometime in the late 1950's, Wally's sister Dora (Theadora) set about tracing Wally's whereabouts. How she did this is uncertain, but she eventually found his location and wrote to Wally. Wally answered her letter and very soon after arrived at her home in Garfield. In April 1960 Wally made a Will in Canberra appointing his sister Dora as executrix of his Will and leaving her all his possessions. He gave his address as Garfield when he made this Will so he may have returned to Canberra to wind up his affairs at that time. He returned to Garfield and lived in a bungalow at his sister Dora's house in Garfield Road, Garfield for a short time, then in a 3 roomed wooden house at the corner of Jefferson Road and Railway Avenue in Garfield. He purchased this property on the 20th of July 1960 from L L Richardson and W Norrie with a deposit of £50 with the remaining £670 (noted on original receipt) to be paid within 6 months. Wally paid the outstanding amount of £680 (noted on final payment receipt, perhaps the extra £10 was to cover stamp duty) on the 28th of July 1960. Sadly the family only had a few short years with Wally back in their family. He developed dementia and was placed in Larundal Hospital in Bundoora sometime around 1963. He was later admitted to the Cheltenham Home and Hospital for the Aged at Warrigal Road Cheltenham, where he passed away in July 1965.

It was always thought that Wally had a partner at some stage in his life, however no details of her are known to any living family, other than that her name was Bessie. It is not known if they married and although there is a photograph of her that was probably in Wally's possessions there is no further information on Bessie at this time.

After Wally's death the house on the property was given to his niece Beryl Campbell and the land was given to his great nephew, Peter Towt. There was some problem with the land due to it containing a road easement which made the land difficult to sell. The house that was on the Garfield property was moved to a block at Pakenham Upper which was then owned by Wally's niece Beryl Campbell (Nee Blackwell) and her husband Don Campbell.

Noted events in his life were:

• He had a residence in 1914 in Iona, Vic, Australia.

• He had a residence in 1924 in Newry, Vic, Australia.

• In 1935 he resided at Capital Hill Camp in Canberra, ACT, Australia.

• In 1937-1949 he resided at Kingston Guest House in Canberra, ACT, Australia.

• In 1958 he resided at Hillside Hostel in Canberra, ACT, Australia.

• In 1963 he resided at Jefferson Road in Garfield, Vic, Australia.

Walter married Bessie [3363].

General Notes: Like many of the Dawes men, Arthur was a tall straight man all his life. He lived in New South Wales as long as I can remember. I remember visiting him at his little home at Curlwaa several times. The first time I can recall was around 1961.

After Flo died, Arthur lived alone for some time. In around 1979, Arthur's son Cliff and his family were living with Arthur whilst they were between homes. They had purchased a block of land close to Wentworth and would later build a home there.

Arthur always had birds, including chooks and parrots, at his house and in later years there were many trophies scattered on top of those cages deteriorating in the sun. He had many many ribbons inside the house, prizes from poultry shows. Arthur was a keen poultry fancier until his later years when he was unable to care for his beloved fowls. He passed his fowls onto his son, but he did not have such an interest in the birds as Arthur had done.

Arthur married Mary Florence BROWN [3365], daughter of Henry Albert BROWN [6084] and Mary Florence [6085], on 20 Sep 1933 in Wentworth, NSW, Australia. Mary was born in 1909 in Wentworth, NSW, Australia and died in 1974 in NSW, Australia at age 65. Another name for Mary was Flo BROWN.

41. Theadora MORGAN DAWES [241] (Frances Mary Ann MORGAN3, Richard William2, Richard1) was born on 1 Jan 1906 in Iona, Vic, Australia, died on 21 May 1979 in Warragul, Vic, Australia at age 73, and was buried on 23 May 1979 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Other names for Theadora were Dora BLACKWELL, Dora DAWES, Theadora DAWES, and Dora FENN.

General Notes: Birth registered as Morgan. Always known as Dora.

Dora lived at Iona with her family and started school at the Iona State School in about 1913. They lived about 1/2 a mile from the Iona Post Office. They moved to Garfield in about 1916 and she attended Garfield State School Number 2724 until at least 1919.

After Dora and Douglas married, the lived in Dandenong for a short time, but returned to the Dawes family home where Douglas and Dora lived at home with her parents and cared for them until their deaths. She continued to live in the house that her father built, at 52 Garfield Road following her marriage and until her death in 1979. Her son, D Geoff, was born in that house in 1933. This house was sold following the death of Dora in 1979 and has since been renovated and sold several times. The original property was several acres, but part of the land was sold separately to Ken Towt, Dora's son-in-law. This piece of land was sold and a house was later constructed on it. Dora's house was situated at 52 Garfield Road Garfield, her son Geoff's house at what is now 46 Garfield Road, Garfield, Cliff's house at 42 Garfield Road, Garfield, Pearl's across the road on the corner of Barkers Road, and Garfield Road, and Beryl's later homes were in Archer Road in Garfield. Pax lived in Beaconsfield, Eve in Warragul and Alan at Beaconsfield, Upper Pakenham, and later in Drouin, whilst Geoff moved to Wonthaggi in 1973, he has continued to own the house at Garfield as well.

Dora was very family oriented and her home was always the hub of family visits, by both the Dawes and Blackwell families. Even after the death of her husband Douglas, Dora and the Blackwell family kept in touch with each other.

In 1937 Dora was expecting her 5th child and her health was not good. Douglas and Dora decided to hire a housekeeper in the short term to assist with domestic duties. They hired Cecilia Ryan, mother of the infamous Ronald Ryan. Pearl Madden recounted a story of the time when Cecilia's Husband Jack came to the house at 52 Garfield Road, Garfield and knocked on the front door asking to talk to his wife. Mrs Ryan did not want to talk to her husband, but he forced his way into the house and, armed with a bread knife, chased Cecilia around the kitchen table trying to stab her and shouting abuse. Pearl Blackwell grabbed her 2 younger brothers, Cliff and D. Geoff and run to the bedroom where the children hid under the bed until the commotion died down. I am uncertain if the police were called or if Jack Ryan simply calmed down and left. Allan Blackwell was born in 25 September 1937 and it is thought that Mrs Ryan left Garfield sometime after that time.

According to the book "The Hanged Man: The life and Death of Ronald Ryan by Mike Richards, published by Scribe Publications Melbourne in 2002, Cecilia had a son George b. 1915 by her first husband, George Thompson, she and George Thompson separated and she lived with John Ronald Ryan, known as Jack who was the father of Ronald, b. 1925, Violet b. 1927 and Irma b. 1929. Cecilia and Jack married in 1929 and Gloria was born in 1931.

Jack and Cecilia were both alcoholics and Jack was prone to bouts of violence whilst drunk and the children were neglected. Ronald was taken into care in late in 1936 and the 3 girls were taken into care in June 1937.

Following is an excerpt from the book from pages 25 and 26:-

"After losing all her children [Ron, Gloria, Irma and Violet] to wardships, Cecilia [Ryan] made a brave attempt to improve her situation. She had left Jack [Ryan] at Mitcham and taken a position as housekeeper with Douglas and Theadora Blackwell and their family at Garfield in Gippsland on the Princes Highway, some 80 miles south east of Melbourne. Cecilia moved back to Melbourne, where she took a further position as housekeeper for a man named Croaker living at 29 Park Street, Abbotsford. With her living conditions thus improved, Cecilia sought to have her children returned to her, as she had first done whilst at Garfield. In a plaintive letter to the secretary of the Children's Welfare Department, John Henry, Cecilia pointed out that Croaker was willing for her to have all her children with her, as she had been 'caring for his four little children so well':

Mr Croaker here has plenty of furniture and accommodation and as it is better for me to be earning my keep here and having the use of everything I thought I would write and ask if you would please let me have my children now. If not all of them at once surely you will give me little Gloria as she has such a terrible time with abscesses and I know it is only through fretting over me and she will never be well until you let her come to me.

I am away from my husband and got a good position and home and can give you good references from both the people I worked for at Gippsland and this man here to say how well I looked after both homes and children during the mother's absence........"

Mrs Ryan gave Dora and Douglas Blackwell a photograph of herself, Jack, George, Irma, Violet and Gloria, taken prior to the 3 girls being taken into care. This photograph and copies of it are still in the possession of the Blackwell family, with a note on the back about the bread knife incident written by Pearl Madden (nee Blackwell).

Dora was a very good seamstress, making many garments for her grandchildren. She also sewed, knitted and crocheted toys for her grandchildren as well as booties and baby clothes. She made picture scrap books that she gave away as presents.

She collected salt and pepper shakers for many many years, and her collection was divided amongst her 7 children when she died in 1979. She also collected small bottles. This collection was inherited by her granddaughter Coral Jones (Blackwell) who has continued the collection.

She was referred to as Nanna by all her grandchildren.

Noted events in her life were:

• She had a residence in 1906-1920 in Iona, Vic, Australia.

• In 1920-1979 she resided at 50 Garfield Road in Garfield, Vic, Australia.

Theadora married Douglas Lancelot BLACKWELL [242], son of William BLACKWELL [1283] and Ada Primrose DARLOW [1282], on 1 May 1926 in Bunyip, Vic, Australia. Douglas was born on 27 Apr 1905 in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire, England, was christened on 4 Jun 1905 in Kettering, Northamptonshire, England, died on 13 Oct 1942 in Townsville, Qld, Australia at age 37, and was buried on 14 Oct 1942 in Townsville, Qld, Australia.

General Notes: Christened at St Andrews Church, Kettering.

Douglas and his brother Paul married cousins, Theadora Morgan-Dawes and Alma Rose Dawes. Douglas and Dora lived in Dandenong for a short time after their marriage, but later moved to 52 Garfield Road, Garfield to the home of Dora's parents Alfred Dawes and the Morgan sisters to look after them in their old age. They probably had at least 2 children when they returned to Garfield, D. Geoff was born in the house at Garfield so they were certainly living in Garfield by 1933. Dora inherited the house at Garfield when her father died.

According to Douglas's brothers and those that knew him, he was a very intelligent man who was very good at fixing things and working things out. One of the Weatherhead's used to say that Douglas was the cleverest person he had ever met.

Douglas was blinded in one eye following a childhood accident. He was a dragline/dredge operator and during WW2 he worked for the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and lived and worked away from home a great deal of the time. He began work at the State Rivers in approximately 1935 and was employed for 1 1/2 years as Fireman on Steam Boilers and then as Operator in charge of Caterpillar Diesel Engine Excavator. In 1939 Douglas began a correspondence course with the "International Correspondence School (A/sia) Pty Ltd. The course was on Diesel engine maintenance and repair which he continued until his death in 1942. There are many "percentage Certificate"s for this course and the lowest mark he ever obtained was 96% which was on the first paper he completed.

In October 1940 Douglas was working at Wodonga, on the Hume Weir. He joined the Federated Engine Drivers and Firemen's Association of NSW and had been a member of that Union's Victorian Branch up until 12 October 1940. His last letter to Dora from Wodonga was dated December 5 1940. In March 1941, Mr F Honeychurch of the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission at Koo-Wee-Rup wrote to Douglas offering him a position as a second Machine operator. It is assumed that Douglas took up this offer as there is a letter dated 23 December 1941 from the SR & WSC, East Melbourne, Koo-Wee-Rup branch signed by the District Officer introducing Douglas to the Captain Superintendent of Training at the Flinders Naval Depot at Crib Point (now known as Cerberus) and another letter dated 1942 from the Department of Defence, Flinders Naval Depot in the form of a Pass in and out of the depot. There is a letter from Douglas to Dora from the Flinders Naval Base is dated Jan 10th (1942). His next letter is c/- the Country Roads Board and is almost certainly sent from Fulham where he worked for a time. His letters continue to say c/- CRB until May 11th, 1942, when the heading changes back to SR&WS, and the location changes to Sale. He was working on the sewerage system in the area. After the Sewerage was completed it is thought that Douglas worked on a project at the Sale RAAF Station as there is a Special Pass dated 6 July 1942 for the hours of 0730 -1800 hours daily for the purposes of working.

There are several references in Douglas's letters to Dora to Sid Black and his wife. Sid Black was a Power Shovel Driver who also worked for the State Rivers and in 1942 was living at 77 Stawell Street, Sale. Douglas sometimes stayed with Sid when he returned to Sale from home at Garfield and then went out the works camp at Sale the following day. Sid's wife sometimes forwarded Douglas's pay to Dora. It is thought Sid's wife's name was Sheila.

There is an enlistment record on the National Archives of Australia website for the Allied Works Council, Civil Construction Corps Register noting Douglas's enrolment to serve from 4 June 1942 as a Drag Line Operator. The records states that Douglas was 5 feet 6" tall and weighed 9 stone 5 lbs. It noted that he had a weak right eye and on 11 September 1942 was ex State Rivers Sale to Brisbane. Under the general remarks section it states 17/9/1942. Wire from Brisbane re destination (see file Maries) deceased see file ....eligible for 2 days service leave.

On the 3rd of September 1942 Douglas received a letter from the SR&WSC Melbourne advising that the Allied Works Council was considering sending operators from Machine No's 21 and 27 to North Queensland and asking if Douglas would be interested in travelling up to his machine. His reply is unknown, but his next letter to Dora dated September 13th is from Brisbane. He spent some time at the Allied Works Camp at Chernside in Brisbane.

He left Brisbane to travel to Townsville on the evening of 1 October 1942 and arrived in Townsville at lunchtime on the 3rd of October and were sent out to "The Black River Camp" about 12 miles out of Townsville on the 5th of October. When he arrived at the camp he decided to try to locate the machines he was supposed to be operating. He found the machines at the Main Roads Camp and was upset to find that they had any number of operators for the machines and felt that his trip to Townsville was a wasted one so he went and spoke to the Engineer. The engineer advised that he would have "them" (Douglas & Frederick Ernest Maries of Shepparton) sent back to Melbourne. Douglas's last letter to Dora from the was dated October 7 1942. His service number was CV26213.

Douglas was in his tent at the Bohle River Civil Construction Corps Camp on the evening of the 9th of October 1942. He and his tent mate Frederick Ernest Maries were to leave the camp to return to Melbourne on the 10th of October. At around 6pm on the 9th, a blast went off from the nearby quarry. Maries was standing at the door of the tent watching the blasting and talking to Douglas about it, and when he did not receive a response from Douglas he turned around and saw Douglas lying on his stretcher with a wound to his head. He got help and an ambulance took Douglas to the Townsville General Hospital, but he died from his injuries at around 4.30 am on the 13th of October 1942.

The Bohle River Civil Construction Corps Camp where Douglas was staying was in close proximity to a quarry where blasting was undertaken on a regular basis. It appears that for some time there had been problems with stones from the blasting flying into the camp area and the powder monkey had reduced the charge to try to stop this happening, and discussions had also been held on moving the camp. According to the "powder monkey", Mr Arthur Hill, the camp and quarry were only about 150 yards apart as the crow flies. The powder monkey allowed 15 minutes prior to lighting the fuse and word of mouth and a whistle sounding was used as a warning of the impending blast. The police officer who attended the scene, Arthur Vincent Moylan advised that the tent in which Douglas was located was about 300 yards from No 1 quarry. The stone that was picked up near the tent was weighed and found to be 2lbs 3 ozs. This is thought to be the stone that hit Douglas in the head and caused the holes in the tent.

Dora received a telegram notifying her of Douglas's death. A second telegram was said to have been sent requesting Dora's decision as to whether Douglas's body was to be shipped back to Victoria for burial or whether he should be buried in Townsville. Dora never received this telegram and consequently the authorities buried Douglas in an unmarked grave in the Townsville cemetery. The existence of this telegram is quite uncertain, particularly in view of the fact that McKimmins Undertakers of Townsville buried Douglas at the New Cemetery in West Townsville on the 14th of October, the day after he died. Mr James Henry Joseph Kelly, the Officer in charge of personnel of the Allied Works Camp in Townsville advised that he sent at least three separate telegrams, to the Police at Garfield, the Deputy Director of Personnel in Melbourne and the Assistant Director of Personnel in Brisbane.

Ironically, all of Douglas's brothers served during WW2 and all survived, but Douglas who was in the Civil Construction Corp was killed.

Many years later, family friends, Hector and Jessie Elliot of Pakenham travelled to Townsville and Hector constructed a concrete headstone at Douglas's grave. His wife Dora was expecting her 7th child when he died. In 1963 Theadora Fenn (Blackwell) paid the Townsville Cemetery Trust to purchase the plot at the Townsville cemetery where Douglas was buried. She paid 10 pounds for the grave number 3, allotment 387, section F, and 2 pounds 2 shillings for the permit fee. This may have been to allow the headstone to be legally constructed, although this is uncertain.

General Notes: Chris was a happy healthy little boy. At the age of about 4 years he was visiting his Grandmother with his family and had a fall and broke his leg. Unfortunately it took some time for the family to realise that he had also suffered a blow to his head during the fall and had developed a clot on his brain. Doctors at the time advised that he was too young to have an operation and would have to wait until he was 7-8 years old for the clot to be removed. The family followed the doctors advice and the clot was removed when Chris was about 7 years of age. Sadly, he suffered complications and brain damage. He remained at home for many years but as his parents aged they decided it would be best for him to be placed into institutional care. He spent many years at the Janefield Centre, in Melbourne. When this centre was closed he was then placed in residential care in Cranbourne.

Pearl and Jim had their home at Garfield modified to make Chris's visits easier. Chris came home regularly on weekends, and holidays, and was always happy to see the extended family when they visited. He always knew who his older cousins were, and never batted an eyelid when they came in with a new baby, but would always know who that baby was as the years passed, even though he saw them only occasionally.

As his parents health deteriorated it became more and more difficult for him to visit his home and in later years only day visits to his parents home were possible. Whilst he was unable to speak following his operation, he could certainly get his message across. He loved to work in the shed making things, and had a very large collection of keys. His favourite thing to do when he visited home was to watch he Three Stooges and he was extremely fond of sponge cake.

Approximately 10 years before his death he suffered a fractured hip from a fall, and was confined to a wheelchair. His health deteriorated rapidly and he died in 2008, just 2 years after his mother and one year after his father's death.

He gained employment as a communications technician installing radio equipment and towers for PG Wallace until late 1988. He was living in Glenhuntly, Victoria. He then got a position for another communications firm installing car telephones and the like. He had only been working at the job for two weeks and was on his way to work on his on his motorbike about 2kms from his home when he hit a speed hump in the road and was thrown into a fence. He sustained serious injuries and was transported to the Alfred Hospital where he remained in a critical condition for one month where he died as a result of his injuries. Douglas did not marry or have any children.

Douglas was the second child and only son of D. Geoff Blackwell and Nancye (Bonham). He lived at Garfield, Victoria, Australia, until he was 14 years old, when his family moved to Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia. Douglas spent some time unemployed after he finished school, and later worked at Smith and Nephew in Wonthaggi and at Containers Limited, a packaging factory in Dandenong, driving from Wonthaggi to Dandenong daily. He moved to Glenhuntly in approximately 1985 where he had obtained a job working for P.G. Wallace and Co, a Prahran based company, who installed, serviced and maintained communications antennas. He worked all over Victoria installing these towers, but most of the work was carried out in the Melbourne area.

Douglas was an early adopter of computer technology and was adept at computer programming. He was also an amateur (ham) radio operator and enthusiast. He assisted in the early stages of organising and installing equipment for the formation of a local radio Station in the South Gippsland area, now known as 3MFM. He was undertaking a course in electronics at the Swinburne Institute of Technology.

The Rialto Towers (often The Rialto) is the second-tallest reinforced concrete building and the tallest office building in the southern hemisphere, when measured to its roof (several other skyscrapers in Australia are taller if their spires are included, as are some other structured in Australia such as communications masts and observation towers). The building is located at 525 Collins Street, in the western side of the central business district of Melbourne, Australia.

The Rialto Towers featured Melbourne's first skyscraper public observation deck which operated between 1994 and 31 December 2009 It was also the location of Melbourne's first Tower running event.

At the time of its completion it was the 23rd tallest building in the world and the 2nd tallest outside of the United States (behind First Canadian Place in Toronto, Canada). Construction of the Rialto Towers was completed in 1986.*(Wikipedia Feb 2012)

P G Wallace and Company installed the communications towers on the top of the Rialto building. Douglas, who was initially very unhappy working at height, soon got used to it, and would proudly recount the fact that he and his workmates used to fly paper aeroplanes from the roof of the Rialto building during its construction and the installation of the communications towers.

Douglas left this job with P.G. Wallace and Co in mid 1988 and commenced working for a company called Australnet Communications that installed car telephones that operated from Mount Waverley. This was an infant industry at the time.

In his younger years Douglas played the cornet in the Wonthaggi Citizens Band, and played competition table tennis at Wonthaggi. He also enjoyed archery. As a child and into adulthood he built and flew model planes, eventually branching out into radio controlled equipment including planes, cars and boats. He competitively raced radio controlled sailing boats on the Albert Park Lake in Melbourne.

As children, Douglas and his sisters learned to ride motorbikes, which were ridden at Garfield on Theadora Fenn's land which was about 6 acres. Eventually Douglas obtained his motorbike licence and rode his bike to work in Melbourne trying to save fuel costs. He had purchased a 125cc racing motorbike which he was preparing to race in 1989.

Douglas was on his way to work at his new job at Australnet Communications, where he had been working for only 2 weeks, when his motorcycle hit a speed hump in the road, only about 2 kms from his home in Glenhuntly. He lost control of the machine and was critically injured and taken to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, where he remained in a critical condition for one month, but finally succumbed to his injuries on the 5th of December 1988.

Douglas did not marry or have any children but loved his nieces and nephews dearly.
