General Notes: The 1851 census of St Helier District 3 shows that John Perkins, head of the household, a bricklayer, aged 24, and his wife Elizabeth aged 36 along with Mary, John and Emma Barkell, step children aged 15, 6 and 2 respectively all lived at 2 Patriotic Place St. Helier. John was said to have been born at Jersey, whilst Elizabeth and children were said to have been born in England. It is unknown when Betsy moved to Jersey.
John's wife, Betsy (Elizabeth Rowe) previously married William Barkell, a miner on the 6/7/1833 at Tavistock. Presumably William Barkell had passed away sometime prior to Betsy moving to the Channel Islands.
The 1851 Census at Tavistock shows Betsy Rowe's parents, Benjamin Rowe, his wife Mary and children John, 40, Charity 21 John Addams 1 Grandson were living at 61 Banawell St Tavistock.
Research in England has found the birth of Mark Perkins at Stoke Damerel in the September quarter of 1857 but there is no entry for Eliza Perkins from 1853-1855.
John PERKINS 31, Betsy, 43, John 11, Emma 9, Eliza 3, Mark infant all from Jersey, England sailed to Australia on the ship "Victory" which sailed from Plymouth on 29 July, 1857 and arrived in Melbourne on 4 November, 1857. They left the ship on their own account in Melbourne. New information has shown that Betsy was John's wife and they married on Jersey. Betsy had been married before and had 3 other children. they were Elizabeth, b c 1833 England, Mary Ann b c 1835 England William b c 1837. According to Betsy's death certificate, John Perkins 2, is the son of Betsy's first husband and Emma, Eliza and Mark were the children of John PERKINS. The name of Betsy's first husband was researched in England and it was discovered that his name was BARKELL.
Betsy's death certificate states that Emma was the child of Mark Perkins, however, this information needs to be checked. Also her mother's name is given as Mary Penwarden, and father is given as Benjamin Rowe, Hotel keeper.
Elizabeth married William BARKELL 1 [487] on 6 Jul 1833 in Tavistock, Devonshire, England. William was born about 1814 and died circa 1848 in Tavistock, Devonshire, England aged about 34.

In the 1875 Post Office Directory, John Perkins is said to be a mason and farmer of Inverleigh Victoria.
No death registration can be found for John Perkins, however, his probate documents, held by the Public Record Office in Melbourne state that he died on 17 Jan 1895 at Swan Hill and that he was buried at Kerang.
John Perkins left his estate in trust for May Barkell (Clara May), the daughter of his stepson, John Barkell, Blanche Perkins, the daughter of his son Mark Perkins of Tragowell, and Betsy Nelson, the daughter of his son in law, Thomas Nelson of Cressy near Colac in equal shares upon attaining the age of 21 years.
He left a piece of Free hold land on the corner of Scoresby Street, and Boundary Street Kerang Vol 983, folio 196564 with a four roomed weatherboard house on it. For the purposes of probate this property was valued at 250 pounds. The house appears to have been rented out after John's death.

HOLMAN V. HOLMAN.
Adeline Elizabeth Holman applied to have her marriage with William Holman dissolved on the ground of desertion. The parties were married in December, 1885, and respondent shortly afterwards gave way to dissolute habits. In June, 1899, he went away, and had not since communicated with his wife, nor had the police been able to discover his whereabouts. A decree nisi was granted and petitioner given custody of the four children. Mr. W.T.C Kelly appeared for the petitioner.

Edward's wife Blanche left Edward about 1921 and the three youngest children, Mary, Muriel Anne and Dennis were placed in St.Aidens Orphanage Bendigo. Edward died on 1.1.1929. An inquest was held into his death. A man driving along Koondrook Rd., approximately 2 and a half miles from Kerang saw Edward lying on the road injured. He picked Edward up and put him into his car and took him to the police station. He was taken to hospital at Kerang and transferred to Bendigo Hospital. He had fallen from a buggy when the horse bolted and had a broken back with spinal cord involvement. The accident occurred on 27.12.1928 and Edward died as a result of his injuries on 1.1.1929.
At the time of his death, Edward Bannan 3 was living with Thomas Henry Collins a farmer at Pyramid Creek about 4 and a half miles from Kerang. His wife Blanche was said to have left him about 8 years earlier and he had been living with Collins for about 2 years .
Edward's occupation was recorded as farmer in 1906 and boundary rider in 1915 and in 1922 labourer.

George Jones served in World War 1. His parents lived at Vienna Cafe Kerang when he enlisted on 19 April, 1917. He had previously been rejected because of his height (5' 1"). He was a private no.3418 in the 59th Battalion. He was later transferred to the 14th Battalion. He left Australia in July 1917 from Sydney of the SS Port Melbourne & landed in Liverpool England on 16.9.1917. on 17.9.1917 he marched to 15th Training Battalion at Hurdcott Wilts. On 23.1.1918 he was sent sick to Clearing Hospital, Codford Wilts and later that day was admitted to the 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital at Bulford, Wilts. On 1.2.1918 he was discharged from that Hospital to Convalescent Training Depot, Parkhurst, Hants. He then went to No. 1 Command Depot at Sutton Veny, Wilts from there to 15th Training Battalion at Codford, Wilts (part of 3rd Training Brigade.
On 31.3.1918 he proceeded overseas to France to reinforce 14th Battalion and arrived at the AIF Base depot at Le Havre, France on 1.4.1918 on marched to the 14th Infantry Battalion on 5.4.1918. On 13.5.1918 he was wounded by gas and was taken by 13th Australian Field Ambulance to 5th Casualty Clearing Station and from there to 41st Stationary Hospital at Amiens, more than 40 miles from the frontline. He was discharged from Hospital on 14.6.1918 and rejoined his unit on 24.6.1918. He was treated by the 12th Australian Field Ambulance on 19.8.1918, admitted to 1st Stationary Hospital, Rouen, France and then to 39th General Hospital, Le Havre. He was discharged from hospital on 11.10.1918 but was re admitted at Le Havre on 22.10.1918. He was discharged on 26.10.1918 and went to AIF Base Depot ex Contact Camp and marched to his Unit on 2.11.1918. He was then placed on Escort Duty on 15.3.1919. He marched out to return to Australia with Quota 46 on 2.5.1919 but was admitted to hospital with scabies to the 39th General Hospital at Le Havre on 5.5.1919 and was discharged on 9.5.1919. He then returned to England and embarked for Australia on H.T. Frankfurt on 1 7.1919. He arrived in Victoria, Australia on 20.8.1919.
Much of his time during the War he fought in the Villers Brettoneux region of France, also at Aubigny where the 14th Battalion undertook the "Hamel Offensive". He was also stationed at Cabaret, Morcourt, Herbonierres, Cardonette, Hangest, Brancourt, Prisches, Sains, St. Aubin, and Hanzinne, France.
He enlisted in World War 2 in the CMF to southern Signals Command on 10.4.1942 whilst living at 63 Beveridge St., Swan Hill. He enlisted in the AIF in July 1942 and his address was given as 117 Miller St., North Fitzroy. He served in Victoria, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. His service no. was VX 85737. He was discharged due to ill health on 2.7.1945.
He was awarded 3 medals for WW1 service, these were 1914/15 Star No. NE, British War Medal 3/68 no.67975 and Victory Medal no.65305. He was awarded 2 medals for WW2 these were the War Medal and Australian Service <@Military*copy_held> Medal.
