21. Richard Tangey [1015] (John 5⁵, William 2⁴, John 3³, John 2², Phillip¹) was born in 1834 in Illogan, Cornwall, England, died on 26 Feb 1899 in Thames, , New Zealand at age 65, and was buried on 28 Feb 1899 in Thames, , New Zealand.

General Notes: Richard and Jane "TANGREY" (TANGEY) came to Australia on the ship "Violet" which sailed from Plymouth on 7 September 1854 and arrived at Portland on 14 December 1854. Richard's occupation was agricultural labourer and the family came from Cornwall. Richard was employed by John Allan of Hopkins Creek.

Richard Tangey and Jane (Mitchell) separated on the 13th March 1877. The separation was published in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper.

Following Richards separation from Jane he spent some time in Yarraville, Melbourne, but his movements for around 8 years are uncertain. In about 1885 Richard went to Tasmania and married Jane Barnett, the widow of a Chinese cook, George Ah Young, the mother of two children. Richard adopted her two boys and they became Tangye's. Richard and Jane Barnett had 5 children in Tasmania, 1 boy, 4 girls. Around 1897, Richard and Jane Barnett moved to New Zealand and had another daughter and son. They changed the spelling of their surname from Tangey to Tangye.

Richard contracted TB and died in 1899 and is buried in Shortlands Cemetery, Thames, New Zealand. Shortly after Richard's death, his youngest son William Alfred also died at the age of 4 months, and is buried at the same cemetery.

On Richard's death certificate his children are listed as follows:- age of daughters 8,6,4,2 and age of sons 11, 3 months - other children in Victoria ages not recorded.

Richard married Jane Mitchell [1014], daughter of John Mitchell [157] and Emma Nettle [158], on 16 Jul 1854 in Illogan, Cornwall, England. The marriage ended in separation on 13 Mar 1877. Jane was born about 1835 in England, died on 1 Jan 1914 in Newstead, Vic, Australia aged about 79, and was buried on 1 Jan 1914 in Green Gully, Vic, Australia.

• They separated from their spouse was advertised in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper on 13 Mar 1877 in Castlemaine, Vic, Australia.

General Notes: Richard Tangey and Jane (Mitchell) left Plymouth on the 7th of September 1854 on the "Violet", arriving at Portland on 14 December 1854. They had 9 children between 1856 and 1868.

It would seem that Richard and Jane became estranged sometime prior to 1871, as in 1871 Jane had a child, Anne Tangey, whose father's name is registered as unknown, then in 1878 she had Rose Crockett (probably Crocker) Tangey whose father is registered as Richard Tangey and in 1881 she had Joseph Crocker Tangey whose father is named as unknown.

This assumption is strengthened in view of the fact that an official separation notice was published in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper on 13th March 1877 between Richard Tangey and Jane Mitchell .

"Memorandum of Agreement of separation made this day, the 13th day of March 1877, betwixt Richard Tangey and his wife, Jane Tangey. The said parties agree to never go together any more, or never to have any more correspondence from this day, as witness our hands, Jane Tangey (her mark) Richard Tangey. witness Wm. Green????

Following Jane's separation from Richard Tangey, Richard went to Tasmania in about 1885. He married Jane Barnett, the widow of a Chinese cook, George Ah Young, who was the mother of two children. Richard adopted her two boys and they became Tangye's. Richard and Jane Barnett had 5 children in Tasmania, 1 boy, 4 girls. Around 1897, Richard and Jane Barnett moved to New Zealand and had another daughter and son. They changed the spelling of their surname from Tangey to Tangye.

Eighteen months after the separation advertisement of Richard and Jane Tangey was published in the Newspaper, Rose Crockett(r) Tangey was born to Jane and 3 years after that, Joseph Crocker Tangey was born.

James Crocker registered the birth and death of the youngest child, Joseph Crocker and was also the undertaker who buried Joseph. James Crocker was a neighbour of Jane and was a widower. It is assumed that James Crocker is most likely the father of at least the youngest 2 of Jane's children. According to the information I have received, James Crocker left after he and Jane had been together for around four years.

TANGEY.--Mrs Elizabeth Tangey, a former resident of Stawell, died at the residence of her son, Mr Herbert Tangey, Goulburn st., Yarraville, on Sunday last week. She was a native of Concongella, and had reached the advanced age of 90 years. After her marriage she went to Stawell with her late husband, William John Tangey, and lived there until about 20 years ago, when she left to reside with her youngest son at Yarraville. Her husband predeceased her about 46 years ago. The late Mrs Tangey, who enjoyed the respect and esteem of a wide circle of friends, is survived by a family of eight. The remains were interred in the Footscray Cemetery.

Crashes Into a Tree.
The Driver Killed.
Early yesterday morning a motor car containing three men skidded on the Melbourne-Bendigo road, about two miles from Macedon, and crashed, into a tree,.One of the occupants was killed and the others injured.
The victims were: - 1
KILLED.
JOHN PARSELL, 32 years, of Langley, near Kyneton.
INJURED.
EDWARD FRANCIS HAWTHORNE, of Castlemaine; broken collarbone.
ALBERT J. WHALEY, Kyneton; shock.
According to statements to the police the party was returning from Melbourne to Kyneton, after having driven to his home a motor cyclist whose machine had been disabled near Kyneton the previous day. The car was being driven by the owner, Parsell. Approaching Macedon the car skidded over an incline, and collided with a tree. Hawthorne and Whaley were thrown clear, but Parsell was thrown through the wind screen.
The injured men were conveyed to Gisborne by a passing motorist.

Coincidentally John Parsell and Edward Francis Hawthorne are both in this family tree, but on different sides of the family.

General Notes: There is strong evidence to suggest that Rose Crockett Tangey's father was not Richard Tangey, as is recorded on her birth certificate, but was in fact James Crocker.

Richard Tangey and Jane (Mitchell) separated on the 13th March 1877. The separation was published in the Castlemaine Mail newspaper. This was 18 months prior to the birth of Rose and 3 years before the birth of the youngest child Joseph. (Feb 2013)

In view of the fact that the Rose's previous sister Anne born 1871, has father recorded as unknown, then the next child following Rose, Joseph born 1881, also has an unnamed father, I assume that at least the last two children, Rose CROCKETT (probably supposed to be Crocker) and Joseph Crocker Tangey are actually the children of James Crocker, who was said to be an blacksmith and undertaker. Despite the fact that Rose's father is recorded as Richard Tangey on her birth certificate, her second name would at least make this suspect. On Rose's birth certificate, her mother's name is given as Jane Price, however I believe that this is a transcription error as the entry underneath also gives the mothers maiden name as Price and the age of 30 for both entries, but the address is given as Yapeen as it was on the birth of Joseph Crocker Tangey. The entry has later been corrected to give the mothers age as 43 years, but the maiden name has not been corrected. There is also a correction stating that the mother was born in Cornwall. The birth was registered on 28 December 1878 and the corrections were made on 31 Dec 1878. (Jan 2013)

ACCIDENT AT BLOCK 14.
AT about 5 o'clock this morning a miner named James Tangey, working underground at Block 14, was buried by a fall of earth. He was rescued from his position at the expiration of a few seconds by his mates. On being taken to the surface he was attended by Dr. Thompson, who thoroughly examined him and found that he was not seriously hurt. So slight, in fact, were the man's injuries that he was able to walk to his home.

Lace Flower Pattern For Local Bride
WHITE lace flower-patterned formed the pretty gown which Miss Ethel Harris wore for her marriage
on Saturday to Mr. Alfred Tangey.
The ceremony was performed in the St. Peter's' Church,, Lane-street, at 4 p.m.
The bride, who is the eldest daughter of Mrs. Dodimead, of Blende-street, was given away by Mr.
A. Teague. The skirt of her bridal gown was made in six pieces, and orange blossom finished the V neck of the frock. The short sleeves were puffed and a silver girdle encircled her waist. Three strands of orange blossom secured her long filmy veil of cut tulle, and she carried a bouquet
of roses, daffodils and white carnations.
Attending her were two brides maids, Misses Rita Tangey and Dorothy Dodimead, and a flowergirl, Mary Gatt. Mushroom pink georgette fashioned their dainty frocks, and silver sprays were fastened to the V-shaped necklines. The skirts were fully flared and silver sprays were set on their heads. They carried bouquets of pink roses, carnations and chrysanthemums. The little flower girl's frock was of scalloped georgette in dove blue. Pink flowers wreathed her halo hat and her Victorian posy was of pink roses and white lilies.
The bridegroom, who is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. James Tangey, of Beryl-street, was supported by Mr. S. McKennan (bestman) and Mr. Alec Murphy (groomsman).
A reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, and the bride's mother received the guests wearing a navy georgette frock with pleated bodice. A spray of flowers lent color to her navy straw hat. The bridegrooms mother chose gaily printed matelassé for her frock with amatching hat.

LORRIES COLLIDE
Slight damage was done to two lorries when they came into collision today. H. E. Cross reported to the police that at 9.10 a.m. one of his lorries was being driven by James Tangey, of 145 Chloride Street, into Crystal Street from the Crystal Street station goods shed, when it collided with a motor lorry driven by E. W. Jenes, of 173 Mica Street, which was travelling north in Crystal Street.
No persons were injured.

Death of Mr. J. Tangey
Mr. James Tangey passed away at the Hospital on Sunday evening at the age of 65 years. Deceased was born at Stawell, Victoria, and had resided here for about 45 years. He leaves a

The late Mr. Tangey was a butcher by trade, but had recently been receiving a pension.

Annie lived on a fruit block no. 496 at Red Cliffs until after her husband's death. She then moved into Red Cliffs. In 1952 she moved to Mildura where she ran a boarding house, but she later returned to Red Cliffs where she lived at 32 Laurel Street until her death. This house was sold in approximately the late 1990's. Annie's daughter Mavis had lived in the house since her mother's death and Mavis then moved into a unit in Red Cliffs and later went into residential care.

She was referred to as Grandma by her grandchildren.

Daniel enlisted in WW1 in Melbourne on 8 January 1916. He was 35 years 6 months of age when he enlisted in the Field Artillery Reinforcements. His enlistment records show he was born in Newstead, his address was Newstead and he was a labourer. His height was 5' 8 3/4", his chest was 34-38. His complexion was described as fair, eyes grey and hair (streaky) brown. His Service number was 14630 22552. I am unsure why two service numbers appear in his records.

He embarked from Australia on 20 May 1916, but the ship's name is unknown.

He fought in France in the 23rd Howitzer Brigade. He was a gunner but was later made a driver.

He spent time hospitalised for various reasons, including lumbago and gastritis.

He was discharged on 12 March 1918 due to gastritis and returned to Australia on the Kenilworth Castle.

He was getting ready for the Anzac ceremony in 1948 when he collapsed and died later that day.

The Presbyterian Church, Merbein, formed a pretty setting for the marriage of , Jessie, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Alexander, of Karadoc avenue, Irymple, to James Mitchell, elder son of Mrs Collihole and the late Mr Collihole, of Joyce's Creek, Newstead district.

The ceremony was performed by Rev. W. Blackwood; of Mildura, on Wednesday, January 18. The bride looked charming in a gown of bordered Ivory crepe-de-chine, with a cream hat and flowers to match. Misses Florrie and Jean Alexander, sisters of the bride, were bridesmaids. The former's, dress was a pretty bordered mauve crepe-de-chine and Miss Jean Alexander's frock was a becoming "Betty Blue" crepe-de-chine, with frills of cream lace.

General Notes: Danny married Sylvia in 1955 and they adventured off to Melbourne for 6 months, Danny being part of the Melbourne CFA. They moved back to Sunraysia settling into Cardross and eventually buying a fruit block from Sylvia's father, where Danny and Sylvia started a family life together. Danny worked for the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for many years. Danny and Sylvia lived a fulfilling life working and celebrating life, eventually retiring to Fitzroy Street in Red Cliffs.

After Danny lost his wife Sylvia and Jean Landells lost her husband Noel, Danny moved in with Jean, being great friends and company for each other.

Danny often headed down south to visit his sister Margaret and family always carrying a stack of fruit and vegetables and honey with him when he came. On Margaret and Len's return visits up north by Margaret and family always came back with bucket loads of fruit and vegetables and honey.

Danny and Jean enjoyed travelling around the country visiting family and friends.

In the last few years of his life, Danny's health started to deteriorate. Danny lived with Jean for many years, returning to his own home for a short time, and from late July 2015, he spent time in Jacaranda Lodge in Red Cliffs, continuing to attend the Mildura Hospital 3 days a week for haemodialysis.

Some of Danny's hobbies and interests during his life included

*Bee keeping and breeding queen bees - Danny along with his mate "Fergy" (Alexander Kenneth Ferguson) spent many years carrying their bee hives all over the country, to ensure a wonderful and large quantity of honey and in later years Danny shared this passion with Sylvia breeding Queen bees and selling them.

·*Fox hunting and trapping in the early years. This pastime funded the purchase of a new car in the 1960's or 1970's.

·*Breeding mini fox terriers

·*Vineyard - out in Cardross, Danny and Sylvia replanted the block with Menindee seedless grapes, these started to come into full production when Sylvia's health deteriorated and they then moved in to Red Cliffs

·*Orchids - Danny had a shed full of orchids where he spent a lot of time, care and love looking after the plants to ensure good blooms

·*Canaries - Danny bred and reared canaries and showed canaries and was president of the Sunraysia Canary Club, he shared this passion with his son Ken.

·*Camping on the river - An annual event spending time by the Mighty Murray River. Every year the Sullivan's and their friends the Landells would go on their camping trip on the river. Both families, including many children would look forward to this trip. As Danny would say "We can't have been too bad at what we did, whilst camping as we never starved".

·*Whiskey - Danny was proud of the fine drop he made, passing on this talent and skill to his eldest son Jim to carry on the legacy.

*Fishing - he loved his fishing in the mighty Murray River, or anywhere he could put in a line.

Danny, being born and bred in the Red Cliffs area, made Appearances in Weekly Times newspaper in story entitled "The Day the River Drowned" dated 19 June 2013 with young Danny and Sunday Herald Sun newspaper 29 June 2003 entitled "By Gum, Trees are dying".
