Jessie Jones cuts her birthday cake on Tuesday.
To meet her, you would never guess that Jessie Jones had just turned 99 years old.

Her energetic personality, or how easily she can hold a conversation, points to a much younger lady.

Her easy-to-talk-to nature is possibly why she has formed so many friendships over her life's journey.

Jessie, who has lived in Deniliquin all her life, had more than 40 family and friends gather on Tuesday, her actual birthday, to mark her 99th year with an afternoon tea.

''I've had a wonderful day,'' said Jessie, who then shared her appreciation of her home town.

''I love Deni and the people in it.

''I've hardly ever left, only to go to Melbourne and to Sydney.''

Jessie has worked several jobs throughout her lifetime, which she says has been one of ''ups and downs''.

''Anywhere I can help, I have done it,'' she said.

The PASTORAL TIMES reported on Jessie's 90th birthday, refer- ring to her as ''an avid bowler''.

Her friends of more than 40 years -Tony and Lyn Smith - say she has always been ''lively'' and ''energetic''.

Despite breaking her hip one year ago, Jessie still ''runs everywhere'', Mrs Smith said.

And what was her birthday wish?

''I just wish everybody the best.''

Jessie, who never had children with her late husband Ron, announced proudly that she has three nieces. She is looking forward to her centenarian celebrations next year.
