bullet  General Notes:

Burnley Express 2 August 1899 page 2
Mrs Ann Hartley, whose remains were yesterday place in the cemetery in the grave where her husband was buried 13 years ago, was the widow of Job Whitham Hartley, of the well known firm of Hartley and Baldwin, Bolt and C makers. Mr Hartley is best remembered for the work he did on the Burnley Board of Guardians. He was a plain, homely, outspoken, genial man, and though he had a few difficult task to perform, he made very few enemies on the Board. He struck hard and delivered his blows straight from the shoulder, but he could smile when he got a blow in return. He was conscientious and fearless, and never flinched to perform any duty however unpleasant. He was a staunch teetotaller and received with the utmost good humour, the chaff his opponents indulged in at his expense. His one ambition was to obtain a seat on the Magisterial Bench in order that he might adequately punish the men who spent their earnings on drink to the neglect of those whom it was their first duty to cherish and to make comfortable.
