The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957) Fri 10 Jan 1868 Page 5 ELECTION GOSSIP.ELECTION GOSSIP.
We observe, with some pleasure, that Mr. Naylor has withdrawn from the contest for Evelyn, in favour of Captain Dane.
Mr. Alexander Brock, of Preston, an old and much-respected colonist, intends to contest the election for East Bourke. If he enters into the contest with anything like spirit be will probably succeed. Mr. R. D. Ireland's nomination for North Gipps Land is quite certain. He purposes visiting the district during the next few days. His presence amongst the electors of that constituency will be sufficient to insure him a large majority. Mr. A. K. Smith intends to offer himself as a candidate for North Melbourne. The Beechworth people are determined to have two representatives in the Opposition interest, for which object a strong committed has been formed.

MELBOURNE.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
7th December.
Another old colonist has gone from amongst us. Mr Alexander Brock, whose name will be familiar to most persons who are at all acquainted with the early history of pastoral settlement in Victoria, died this morning at his residence, Oak Hill, Preston, after, a brief illness. Mr Brock arrived in Tasmania with his father and family in 1835, and a year or two later came over to Port Phillip in the wake of the late Mr Faulkner, and took up land in the Western district. Subsequently, I believe, the deceased gentleman was engaged in squatting pursuits in partnership with Mr W. J. T. Clarke.
