A SUDDEN DEATH
.
A sudden death of an elderly married woman named Caroline Slater was reported to the police at a late hour on Saturday night. Mrs. Slater, who was seventy-one years of age, was employed as a nurse at the Freemason's Arms Hotel. She went to bed apparently in good health at nine o'clock on Saturday night and during the night it was discovered that she had died. The deceased had been complaining of pains near her heart for the past few months. The police on interviewing her daughter (Mrs. Hayward) and a son of the deceased at their residence in Murray-street, learned that Mrs. Slater had been in ill-health for some time past and frequently complained of pains around her heart. At an early hour yesterday morning Constable H. Miller visited the hotel and saw the body, and in his report he stated that from the advanced age of the deceased and from what he had learned about her he was satisfied that death was due to natural causes. Dr. E. B. Fitzpatrick was summoned but he refused to give a certificate as he had not seen the woman before her death. Mr. W. Burrowes, J.P., on reading the constable's report said he was satisfied that a post-mortem examination was not necessary, and gave an order for the burial of the body. 8968
