The South Australian Advertiser (Adelaide, SA : 1858 - 1889) Wed 17 Jun 1863 Page 3 CLARENDON. CLARENDON. [From our own Correspondent.] June 15. The body of the unfortunate girl, Eliza was recovered on Saturday morning, and an inquest was held the same afternoon before Mr. E. J. Peake, S.M. John Donohoe, father of the deceased, was examined, as were also the mother and brother of the girl, and a note was produced, addressed to her sister Ellen, which was found pinned with her bonnet to the tree near the place where the fatal act was committed.
The note was as follows:-"My dear and dearest Sister - As these are probably the last words you shall ever see from me again, remember me when you see them; and O! pray to God for my soul, and forgive my mother as I forgive her. What grieves me most in that I did not see Michael Enright before now. Give my love and blessing to him for my sake. Farewell, yours truly. Give my watch to him in remembrance of me. I hope you will not fail. Oh, do, dear Ellen, pray for me."
No further light was thrown upon the cause of the girl's unfortunate act. Medical evidence having been taken as to the manner of death, the Jury returned a verdict to the effect that the deceased drowned herself while in a state of temporary insanity. Much sympathy is manifested towards the parents and family, as they are old and respected inhabitants of this district.
