INQUEST. OLD WOMAN'S DEATH.
Tram Driver Exonerated.
A finding that Sarah Coubrough (76), of Violet-street, West Perth, met her death on October 12 by being accidentally knocked down by a tramcar at the intersection of Second-avenue and Gulldford-road, Maylands, no blame being attachable to the driver of the tram, was returned by the Acting-Coroner (Mr. I Foristal, J.P.) at an inquest held at the Perth Court-house yesterday. It was stated that Mrs. Coubrough had a poor memory and was accustomed to wander about the streets alone, sometimes unable to find her way home. Sergeant Lynes examined the witnesses. Evidence showed that on the day of her death Mrs. Coubrough was seen by her husband at the corner of William-street and Newcastle-street. He told her to go home, but later an acquaintance met her in Wittenoom-street, East Perth. This witness told her in answer to a question that one of her daughters lived in Guildford-road, Bayswater, and told her how to go home. About 11.30 p.m. a motorist saw a woman answering to her description walking north in the middle of Guildford-road, Mt. Lawley. Wallace Moseley Woodford, motorman of a tramcar, travelling north in Guildford-road about 11.40 p.m., said that near First-avenue the tram was travelling about 15 miles an hour. He slowed down crossing the intersection, which was very dark. When he had crossed the intersection he saw the woman, close to the tram, walking towards it about a foot from the south rail. He sounded the gong and put the tram into reverse, but the tram struck the woman before it stopped.
