Yesterday afternoon the remains of the late Mr. Frederick William Zirkler, senr., were solemnly consigned to their last resting place in the Church of England portion of the Bendigo Cemetery. The funeral was of a private nature and moved from the residence of his son, Mr. Fred Zirkler. Ashley street, Ironbark. The Rev. F. Leypoldt. held a short service before leaving, and also solemnised the burial service at the grave. The coffin was carried to the grave by Messrs. E. Eisfelder, G. Charpe, R. Thorn and W. Elliott. The funeral arrangements were under the supervision of Mr. Thomas Sayer, of Bridge street. Deceased left Hamburg, Germany, on Easter Monday, 1854, in a new vessel, "The Waldemar," on her first voyage. After a voyage of 16 weeks he arrived in Port Adelaide on 8th October. 1854 . He was educated at the Clansthal Mining Academy, from which he received first-class honors and credentials. The late Professor Zimmerman was one of his instructors. Deceased was renowned for his great learning, and the books he wrote on mining and mineralogy, etc. The. late Mr. Zirkier was a college mate and friend of the late Mr. Carl Ulrich, geologist to the New Zealand Government, also of the late Mr. G. Thureau, geologist to the Victorian Govenment, Mr. Zirkler was instrumental in helping Mr. Thureau to prepare his report on his return from California, where he was sent to inquire into mining matters in that country by the Victorian Government. Deceased was also an intimate friend of Mr. Koch, the father of the late Professor Koch, who claimed to have found a cure for consumption. Mr. Zirkler often said that he had this great man (Professor Koch) on his knee and fondled him when a boy many a time. His wife predeceased him six years ago. He leaves a daughter (Mrs. Dennis) and two sons (Mr. Fred Zirkler, of Ironbark, and Mr. William Zirkler, of Kerang). Deceased arrived in Bendigo in 1856. The deceased gentleman led a strenuous life as a prospector, hotelier, farmer and mining manager. He never went in for any publicity, and was of a retiring but extremely energetic disposition, and passed away at the ripe age of 87.
