bullet  General Notes:

William served in WW1 his SERN was 796. William left Melbourne in May 1916 on the Ascanius and arrived in France in November 1916. He was made a Corporal in May 1916. He received a gunshot wound to the chest in January 1917 and died of that wound.

There is a letter from a Miss Gladys Jones of Howitt Street Ballarat dated 31 January 1917 asking if the casualty report in a recent Ballarat newspaper reporting a William Barclay as died of wounds was number 796? I presume Gladys may have been William's girlfriend although this is not stated in the letter. 4987
