  General Notes:

Joseph first married Sophia Atkins who was the widow of Joseph Dicks. Sophia's husband died in March 1840 and was buried on 1 April 1840. Sophia and Joseph Groom married on 22 Jun 1840. Sophia had given birth sometime in 1840 to A child who was baptised the same day as Sophia and Joseph Groom married. The child was Elizabeth Dicks Groom. Sophia had 3 children with Joseph Groom, Sarah Bethia, Andrew William and Edward Ebenezer. Sophia died in Augusst 1847.

At the 1851 census, Joseph is living with his children, Elizabeth 11, Sarah, 9 and ndrew William 7. Also living in the house is Elizabeth Attley housekeeper aged 24, her daugher Hannah Attley aged 6 and Eleanor Attley 1 who is referred to as Joseph's daughter.

Elizabeth (Betsey) went on to have a further 5 children presumably the father was Joseph Groom however, all the children born before Elizabeth Attley's marriage to Joseph Groom in August 1859 are registered under the surname Attley, which they all kept until their marriage or death.
