BENNETT-On May 6, 1906, at Horsham, Samuel Bennett, dearly beloved father of Samuel Bennett (of West Australia) ; Mrs James Mewburn and Mrs William Mewburn (of New South Wales) ; Charles Bennett, and Mrs Frank Leister (of Horsham) ; aged 85 years. SARAH MEWBURN. Died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. M. Porter, of Lynch Street, on Christmas Eve, Mrs. Sarah Mewburn (84), a member of an old pioneering family which came out to the Ballarat goldfields in the early days.
For the best part of the last 35 years she has lived at Stockinbingal. Born in Birmingham, England, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. Bennett, Mrs. Mewburn came with her parents to Australia when she was 16. The family proceeded to Ballarat, where shortly afterwards the daughter was married to the late Mr. James Mewburn.
In 1891 Mr. and Mrs. Mewburn left Ballarat and took up farming at Finley, N.S.W., later (in 1900) coming to Stockinbingal. Mr. Mewburn died in 1927 and 18 months ago Mrs. Mewburn came to live with her daughter, Mrs. Porter. She was in good health until about a fortnight before her death, when she became ill.
There were nine in the family, three being deceased. Those surviving are: Mrs. J. B. Fitzgerald (Milvale), Mrs. B. Witenden (Stockinbingal), Mrs. M. Porter (Lynch Street), Mrs. V. Corby (Narraburra) and Robert and Alfred (Stockinbingal). The 20 grand-children include Mr. Matt. Porter, of Messrs. T. A. Tester & Co., and there are 16 great grandchildren.
The funeral took place on Christmas Day from Lynch Street to the Stockinbingal cemetery, where Rev. H. E. Cosier (Methodist minister at Young), assisted by Mr. Francis, of Cootamundra, carried out the last rites. There was it large and representative attendance of Young and Stockinbingal residents. The pallbearers were grandchildren.
Sarah married James MEWBURN [6649] [MRIN: 1448], son of Thomas MEWBURN [12794] and Jane HURST [12795]. (James MEWBURN [6649] was born in 1844 in , Lancashire, England and died in 1927 in Young, NSW, Australia.)
