Fatal Accident at Greensborough.

Fatal Accident at Greens borough.
(From Our Correspondent.)
A most distressing accident occurred at Greensborough on Easter Monday morning, when Mr John Wilson, a very highly respected resident, met his death. The deceased and his son Herbert, a young man of 20, were engaged excavating sand prior to loading same. There is a surface deposit of some feet of soil and drift gravel, and to avoid the trouble of removing this it has been the custom for carters to tunnel in, thus leaving a roof of the most un stable kind to work under. Whilst busy shovelling out the sand, without a moment's warning the roof collapsed, completely burying the father and covering the son up to the neck. Fortunately for the latter they were accompanied by a friend who immediately gave the alarm, which was promptly responded to by several men from farms in the vicinity. Willing hands strenuously worked to remove the tons of earth under which the unfortunate man was imprisoned. The son was quickly released and, nothwithstanding the fact that he was terribly bruised, he worked with almost superhuman energy to rescue his father. When the body of the un fortunate man was uncovered it was at once apparent that he was past human aid. Dr Rollason had been summoned and quickly arrived by motor, but death had been instantaneous. On Tuesday Dr Rollason, J.P., held an inquiry. A verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anybody. The deceased gentleman was a native of Diamond Creek, and had lived in the district all his life. Very great sympathy is felt for the bereaved wife and family. The remains were interred in the Diamond Creek cemetery in the presence of a large number of sorrowing relations and friends. The Rev H. Mitchell officiated at the grave side. The deceased gentleman was universally esteemed for his manly, generous qualities, his devotion to religion being acknowledged as sin cere by his most intimate friends, and regret was freely expressed at the tragic termination of useful a life.
