On his enlistment papers, William gives his age as 44 years and 10 months. He was actually 51 years of age at the time. He had problems with an ankle he had broken after enlistment and this caused him problems with standing and marching.

News (Adelaide, SA : 1923 - 1954) Thu 1 Apr 1943 Page 3 Claim for Third of £10,000 Prize in Lottery Claim for Third Of £10,000 Prize in Lottery MELBOURNE.-Claiming a third share in a £10,000 prize and a £200 bonus in a Tasmanian lottery, William Axtill, 77, retired butcher, of White Hills, near Bendigo, today brought an action in the Banco Court against John Cahill, of Elsternwick. Axtill alleged that on May 4, 1942, he, Cahill, and Axtill's daughter (Mrs. Doris Holmes) had verbally agreed to buy a ticket in the lottery. They drew first prize, but Cahill refused to pay Axtill his share of the proceeds. Saying that the story told by Axtill was a concoction, and that the evidence of Mrs. Holmes was incredible in many respects. the Chief Justice (Sir Frederick Mann) entered judgment for Cahill with costs.

The Chief Justice (Sir John Latham) dismissed the claim and entered judgment for Cahill, with costs.
