bullet  General Notes:

Elizabeth Ann MORGAN married Alfred DAWES. They had 12 known children.

All but the first of these children were registered as DAWES and Charles Edward DAWS.

Very little is known about the family of Richard Morgan and Elizabeth Swindon.

Richard was a wood carver, he married Elizabeth in England and came to Australia, from England in 1858. Elizabeth, died with seven children, when Frances, the youngest had just turned one year old, and in the same year Frances's 7 year old brother died as well. It is thought that Richard, left at least the younger children and they were apparently put into an orphanage or similar, probably somewhere in Melbourne. What happened to the two older children, Richard and Jane is not known. Perhaps they went with their father to Sydney, but that is unknown at this time. Richard died of throat cancer in an asylum for the infirm and destitute in Sydney. There was very little information on his death certificate apart from his name and age. The informant knew nothing of his marital status, his occupation and any personal details whatsoever.

Frances, the youngest sister of Elizabeth, had one illegitimate child in the Castlemaine area and returned to Melbourne where she had another child. It is uncertain if this child is the child of Alfred Dawes. Frances then moved in with her two sisters, Elizabeth and Louisa, who were living in the Garfield / Iona area, Victoria, Australia, with Alfred Dawes. Each of the three sisters had children to Alfred Dawes over many years, and their surnames were registered as Dawes, Morgan or occasionally Morgan Dawes. All of the children, approximately 28 in total used Dawes as their surname.
