Alfred went to Tasmania at the age of 19 years and returned to Victoria in 1913. He worked at a sawmill in Gembrook, managed a farm in Garfield for Melbourne solicitors, Brocket and Kemp, and worked at Arthur Weatherhead's sawmill, as well as stripping, flattening and weathering bark. In 1922 he built a bark hut at North Garfield on Creek Reserve on "miners site land". In 1923 he worked on the first power line from Yallourn to Melbourne ²⁸⁷⁸
