A Charge withdrawn - Florence Austin, married woman, Earl's Barton, was charged with stealing a tame fowl, value 3s and 6d, the property of Jabez Blackwell, on December 15 - the prisoner, a most respectable looking woman, who appeared to feel her position acutely, was represented by Mr J. Heygate - The parties are nearly related by marriage, and the prosecutor wishing to withdraw the charge, the magistrates allowed him to do so.

Jabez's eldest son William Francis had married Elizabeth Austin in 1874.

EARLS BARTON
ODDFELLOWS' DINNER

the 27th anniversary of the Loyal Phoenix Lodge no. 6252 M.U.I.O.O.F., was held in the lodge room, Earl's Barton, on Saturday and was again a decided success. The Chair was taken by Bro RJ Cole, P.G (Good intent Lodge), who was supported by P.P.G.M W.R. Ford and about 50 of the members of the Lodge. After the dinner, which was excellently served by the Host, Bro. F. Dunkley, the evening was given up to speeches and songs- The loyal roasts were very heartily received - Bro F Taylor suitably proposed the "Imperial Forces of the Crown." coupling the names of Bro. A. Johnson late of the 17th Lancers, who in an interesting speech recalled some of the difficulties of his campaigns - Bro J Austin briefly proposed "The Manchester Unity", and Bro Ford replying gave his hearers a short history of the rise of the Order, its conception, ambitions, and today's success. He urged young men to recognise their responsibilities in the Order and accept their share of the work - The toast of "The Phoenix Lodge" given from the chair, was incorporated with a very pleasing ceremony performed by Bro. Ford, really the main business of the evening, namely, that of presenting to all living P.G;s of the Lodge the jewel of the office. It was a happy coincidence that Bro. Ford should have been invited to hand to some of the oldest Oddfellows in the district their jewel, seeing that he was District G.M. when the Lodge was opened 27 years ago, on September 18th. In a speech, very feelingly delivered and heartily endorsed by the members present, he thanked the brothers for the work rendered to their Lodges, and wished for the recipients, on behalf of the Lodges, many years of useful work for the youngest, and many years of quiet satisfactory retrospection for those who had during their best years given to the Lodge their faithful service - Fourteen P.G.'s whose names are given below, were present, and many were the pleasant memories recalled by Oddfellows of 30, 40 and 50 years standing, who explained that the present Phoenix Lodge broke away from the old society 27 years ago. Each of the P.G's acknowledged the gift and many good wishes were expressed for the continuing prosperity of the Lodge and the Order - Thanks were given to Bro Ford for his kindness by Secretary Berrill and Treasurer F Taylor; and to Bro Cole for occupying the chair, by N.G. Bro G. H Rogers and V.G Bro B.Miller. Songs were given during he evening by Brothers W F Johson, C J Hagar, H F Hart, J W Harris, G Copson and E Taylor and reciations by Bros. O. Russell and Bro W R Ford - Bro O Russell was a visitor from the True Briton Lodge - The P.G.'s who received the jewels were as follows:-
Bros WIlliam Miller, late Trustee and Treasurer;
George Copson, Trustee since 1885
Charles Russell, late Trustee,
Joseph Dayton 52 years standing
John Copson, one of the first members
