The death took place on Tuesday night of Mr. John Barkell at his residence, Queen-street hotel, at the age of 63 years. The deceased gentleman, who was a native of Devonshire, came to this State when only nine years old. About five years ago he arrived in Bendigo, and entered into the hotel business, which he successfully conducted up to the time of his death. On account of his characteristically genial and benevolent nature, he became well and favorably known. He was a member of the local Licensed Victuallers' Association, Druids' Lodge, and Walkers' Association. He had a host of friends in Kerang, where he resided for 22 years, and conducted a large diningroom and wine cafe. He was a trustee of the Kerang Agricultural Society, and was prominently associated with cricketing, racing, and other sporting bodies there. His health for the past 18 months had been failing, and at times it caused intense physical suffering, which he bore patiently and bravely. He leaves a widow and family of two sons and four daughters to mourn the loss of a devoted husband and kind father. The funeral will taka place to the Bendigo Cemetery to-day at 3.30 p.m 661
