Farmer Killed At Pakenham
STRUCK BY PASSENGER TRAIN
Injuries, which resulted in his death were sustained by Mr Thomas Jeremiah, farmer, aged 47 years, of South Pakenham, when his motor truck was struck by a passenger train at the level crossing at Main Street. Pakenham, at half past nine o'clock on Easter Monday morning.
Statements made to Constable Grinter, of Pakenham, by eye-witnesses of the accident, indicate that while Mr Jeremiah was driving along Main street he apparently heard the ???? a.m. down passenger train to Bairnsdale approaching the crossing, which is about a quarter of a mile on the Melbourne side of the Pakenham station. The breakes [sic] of the small motor truck which he was driving, were applied without effect owing to the wet road, and the truck skidded into the track of the train. The driver of the train noticed the truck, and although every effort was made to stop the train the distance was too short and the motor-truck was struck with great force, Unable to leave the truck Mr Jeremiah received the full force of the impact, and was severely injured about the head and body. He was carried about 4 yards on the cowcatcher of the engine, and was then thrown on to the side of the permanent way. When picked up he was conscious, and he was hurried to a private hospital, where he died 25 minutes after his admittance. Mr Jeremiah leaves a wife and 11 children. The accident was witnessed by some Morwell and Boolarra residents who were passengers on the train.
