Werribee Shire Banner (Vic. : 1911 - 1952) Thu 6 Mar 1941 Page 3 Jockey's Car In Crash DEATH OF BOY, 14 The City Coroner (Mr. Tingate, P M.) yesterday recorded a finding of death by misadventure at the inquest on John Richard Tangey, 14, of Goulburn Street, Yarraville, press hand. In a statement produced in court, Victor Cadman Hartney, 20, jockey, of Werribee, said that at about 9 p.m. on February 11 he was driving west along the Geelong Road at about 40 m.p.h. on the correct side of the road. Descending the railway bridge at West Footscray the lights of an approaching vehicle dazzled him. As soon as the car passed a bicycle loomed in front. He had no opportunity to do anything. No sooner had he seen the bicycle that he hit it. Geofrey Thomas Boal, a first-constable attached to the Wireless Patrol, said that with Hartney he measured certain portions of the road way. From the point of impact, Tangey was thrown 33 feet. He followed a light tyre or brake mark back 75 ft. from the point of impact. The car could have stopped sooner if the brakes were harder applied, but they had apparently been only lightly applied. Hartney, in evidence, said he had slowed coming down the hill and lightly applied his brakes as the other vehicle approached: It had just passed when he hit the cycle with his nearside front headlight and mud guard.
