Obituary.
Obituary.
William Henry Blencowe.
General regret was expressed on Saturday last when it became known in Birchip that William Henry Blencowe, (more familiarly known as Billy Blencowe) had died in the Base Hospital, Melbourne, the previous night. The deceased was born at Therterton, S.A., and arrived at Terang with his parents when about two years of age. He was the oldest son of the late Mr and Mrs Blencowe and was one of the oldest residents of Birchip, having selected land in the district in the early eighties, Blencowes Tank still bearing his name.
The family built the Birchip Hotel where they resided for a number of years. The deceased was a sport, and it is on record that he practically initiated the first Birchip race meeting, which was held on the Pump Hut Reserve.. When the war broke out the late Mr Blencowe, after two or three tries, at last was accepted and enlisted. He was on the troop ship Southland when that vessel was torpedoed, and for some time was hanging on to a rope with portion of his body in the sea. His death was due to hemorrhage of the brain, the cause of his death and preceding illness is alleged to be due to several knocks he received, while clinging to the boat. The deceased was 54 years of age. He leaves a wife, three sons, (one of whom is at the front)-one daughter, and in addition
two brothers (Alf and John) and five sisters (Mesdames Bright, Chigwidden, Swanston, Stewart and Mrs Kean. The last remains of the deceased were interred on Saturday last, when he was accorded a military funeral.
