General Notes:
Private in the 47th Regiment
James Killum WO 12 5900 Regt. No. 371 William Killum joined the 47th from England on 21 October 1827 and is listed as on his way to join the Regt. at Canterbury Barracks, Berhamporo, East India in the pay book entry for the period 1st to 30th November 1827. His muster is shown as 'Band'. There is no change to his status as a Private or his muster for the rest of his time in the Regt. till his death and no charges for misdemeanours. I presume the name William is a clerical error made before his arrival as all future entries give his first name as James. A possibility he had two given names? The spelling in all hand written entries in the original pay books is Killum. Interestingly the Certificate copying the entry for his marriage (1836) in the National Register is spelled Kellam. WO 12 5910 December 1838 has Private James Killum in the Regimental Hospital (Malta) and his death occurred on 10th February 1839 (no cause shown). The entry for his death is shown in the same manner as for a discharge (people leaving the Regt.). Private James Killum Regt. No. 371 was born at Leixlip, Kildare, Ireland. His occupation at enlistment was a weaver. He enlisted on 14 August 1826 (must have either been at the home Depot Barracks or in a different Regt. before going to East India in 1827). His widow Sophia was paid 5s 9d and the children are listed as Mary Ann and Anne. From Ancestry.com via noellb_1 originally shared this on 31 Jan 2017
