General Notes:
I have found 2 Alexander Ambrose's born in Edinburgh, the first is Alexander Ambrose baptised in 1780, parents being John Ambrose and Ann Gow, the other is Alexander Ambrose baptised 17 Jan 1789 with parents George Ambrose and Isobel Reid. I am uncertain which would be the correct person but perhaps the one baptised in 1789 would be more likely, though any ages given at this time can be wildly inaccurate.
At Hannah and Alexanders marriage, Alexander is said to be a bachelor in the Banns. On Hannah's death certificate the informant is Hannah's son George Dawes who gives Hannah's rank or profession as "wife of Alexander Ambrose, Soldier".
I have found an Alexander Ambrose who was in the 71st Foot regiment of the 22nd Dragoons. This Alexander was 28 years of age was 5 feet 5/12 inches. If his age was 28 he would have been born in approximately 1775, He enlisted on 31st August 1798. His complexion was dark, hair black and eyes grey. His occupation was cordwainer and he was born in Edinburgh Midlothian, Scotland. His terms of service were unlimited from 22 Aug 1798. The column for service in India is damaged and unreadable in this document. Alexander was discharged on 23 July 1820. He was admitted to the Royal Hospital at Chelsea Registers aged 49 on 13 September 1820, ages and years of birth do not compute with previous dates and ages giving. He left this unit due to disbandment and to date I have found no other service records to confirm that Alexander continued as a soldier after the disbandment of the unit.
I have also found an Alexander Ambrose, born in Scotland of approximately the same age who was a Seaman. He served on various ships from 1810 to aproximately 1834. The ships he served on the Clorinde from 20 Oct 1810-13 Jul 1816, the Menai from 25 May 1819-9May 1820, the Elacrity from 10 Mar 1821-7 Aug 1823, the Raleigh 17 Jun 1826-4 Dec 1829, Childres 18 Jan 1830-8 Mar 1831, The Oceiania 10 Jun 1833-18 Jun 1833, the Serpent 19 Jun 1833-9 July 1834 and possibly the Atholl.
I have obtained the death certificate of Alexander which gives me very little information and I am unable to accurately identify which Alexander Ambrose is the correct one, though I suspect it is the soldier, rather than the sailor. The death certificate gives Alexander's occupation as "pensioner" and he died in the Greenwich hospital. HIs age is given as 61 at the time of his death and the death was registered by a nurse at the Greenwich Hospital. It is possible that this death is actually the death of the seaman Alexander Ambrose rather than the soldier, but there is no way to prove or disprove this.
