I have found a military record of Private James Ambrose who was a Private in the 3rd Light Dragoon who served 24 years and 76 days including 11 years and 2 months abroad comprising 9 1/2 years in India and 2 1/2 years in Turkey, the Crimean war. He was Private 1389 and was born at St Pancras, London Middlesex and enlisted in London on the 8th June 1843 at the age of 19 years and 4 months. When he enlisted his trade is given as printer.
His final description when he was discharged from the service at Hounslow. He was aged 43 years and 6 months on discharge, his height was 5' 7". He had a dark complexion, hazel eyes, and brown hair. On discharge, his trade was a Servant and his intended residence at discharge on Aug 22 1867 was Norton House, Freshwater, Isle of WIght.
I have found that James Ambrose of the 3rd Regiment of Dragoons was a servant to lieutenant Elliott during the crimean war.
This record gives the correct age and information for it to be this James Ambrose. His military service and time overseas would confirm the lack of appearance in any further census of England after 1841.
