bullet  General Notes:

Freda left Melbourne in 1941 and moved to New South Wales. She had 3 sons and raised two of her grand daughters (there were five children in that family) after the failure of the marriage of one of her sons.

I have very little information on her sons or grandchildren's names.

17 Year-Old Digger Given A Chance

GIVING way to sudden temptation while waiting to be served with lollies to take home to his young
brothers and sisters, a young member of the A.1.-R on leave from Darley, last Sunday leaned
over the counter at the shop of Freda Daphne Fooks, Hammond Rd., Dandenong, and took three
£1 notes. As he was in the act of doing so a lad came into the shop and asked him what he was
doing with the money. "Here's £l-keep quiet about it," accused said, handing him one of the notes
.
'Mrs Fooks missed the money as soon as she went to the till, and reported tier loss to the police. Constable G. H. Stanesby and Detective Howard went to the soldier's home and Interviewed, him. He admitted the offence and produced two £1 notes in a match-box from behind a post.

When asked by the P,'M. if he would withdraw the charge, Detective Howard regretted that this could not be done, but said that he would like to see given every chance. He had expressed regret for what he had done, and there was nothing else against him. (Proceedings had been taken because the police had instructions from the Militiary Authorities to keep strict discipline over soldiers.

He suggested an adjournment for 12 months to give the lad a chance.
Mr Wilkins approved of this .course, and- adjourned the case to a date to 'be fixed, (not more than 52 weeks. Full restitutions, were made to Mrs Fooks.

Subsequently the police discovered that accused, was. not 20 years old but only 17.
