Maria SMITH [819] ¹⁵¹⁷

Maria is said to have been a gypsy. Maria's birth registration reads as follows:-

Baptisms at Broughton 1808 - Maria the daughter of Henry and Sarah Smith of Chesterton in the County of Oxford, the 28th of June - Gipsies ????

Robert Bernard Blackwell (b. England d. Australia) (grandson of Sarah Darlow (Holland) used to tell the family a story about someone in the Darlow family being a gypsy (Romany Traveller). He said that the woman in the family used to sit around the fire smoking pipes and talking in a different language.

Dave Darlow (England) (Great Grandson of Sarah Darlow (Holland) England, in July 2012 advises that they were told that Sarah Holland was a gypsy and his father could speak the gypsy language as could his grandfather and they learned it from Sarah Holland.

When Sue Holmes (England) (Great Great Granddaughter of Sarah Darlow (Holland) was 16 years of age her grandfather Walter Herbert William Darlow told her that there were gypsy Smiths in the family He said that they were fair ground people.

Maria was still alive and living with Edward in the 1851 Census, but at the 1861 census, Edward was living with Mary Ann Holland, although Edward and Mary Ann did not marry until 1864 when Edward calls himself a widower on the marriage certificate.

I have obtained the death certificate of Maria Holland who died in 1851 in Wellingborough, and this has proved to be an incorrect certificate as the Maria Holland of this certificate is the wife of Thomas Holland, rather than Edward Holland.

Maria had a relationship with someone.

Maria next married Edward HOLLAND [1315] [MRIN: 8], son of Richard HOLLAND [1384] and Virgin SMITH [1519], on 1 Feb 1830 in Bow Brickhill, Buckinghamshire, England ^1517,1518.^,1519 (Edward HOLLAND [1315] was born in 1809 in Totternhoe, Bedfordshire, England ¹⁵¹⁷, christened on 10 Sep 1809 in Totternhoe, Bedfordshire, England ^1523,1524 and died on 1 Jan 1883 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, England ¹⁵²⁵.)
