Notes
General:
Elizabeth arrived in Adelaide South Australia in 1854 with her parents when she was aged 7 years.

Her life seems a bit of a mystery. She seems to have had a child in 1866 under the name Discombe, in 1867 some people have a child with the name of Walter Patrick Kelly recorded as her child and then she has Amelia in 1870 whose father is said to be Charles Williams and another child named Charles Albert Williams born in 1873. To date I have found no evidence any marriages of Elizabeth Mary Discombe, but she is a possible partner of Alfred Thomas Dawes.

I have found the following births of
1. Lucy Discombe birth 17 Jan 1866 Mount Torrens mother Elizabeth Discombe page 206 vol 41 died 19 Jan 1866 Mount Torrens page 245 vol 22
2. William Patrick Kelly b. 2 Jun 1867 Adelaide, father Patrick Kelly mother Elizabeth Discombe page 789 vol 33
3. Amelia Williams no birth rego found to date. Whilst Amelia's father is recorded on records as Williams, DNA matches on Ancestry.com in February 2024 with various Dawes descendants, indicate that her father was likely to be Alfred Thomas Dawes, though it is possible it may have been one of Alfred's brother's who was the biological father of this child.
Amelia would have been born when Alfred was 24 years of age if he is the biological father. His first child with Elizabeth Morgan was not born until 1873.

4. Charles Albert Williams born 17 Jun 1873 in Adelaide father listed as Charles Williams and Mother as Elizabeth Discombe page 714 vol 123.

Family Notices
A GOLDEN WEDDING.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Discomb, old and respected colonists of upwards of forty years, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their wedding-day at Woodside on Monday. They
were married on March 7, 1877, at Newton Abbott, England, and cams to South Australia in the ship Standard, Captain Blyth, which arrived on December 21, 1854. They then came to Balhannah, and have lived in the Onkaparinga district ever since. Mr. Discomb soon after his arrival in the colony entered the service of Mr. William Rounsevell as mail-driver
between Adelaide and Mount Torrens. After Mr. Rounsevell retired he went on with Messrs. Cobb & C., and finally with Hill and Co. Mr. Discomb was very popular with the passengers, who had great confidence in him as a driver. After laying aside the whip he
commenced brick-making at North Woodside, which business he has carried on
for a number of years with success.

He takes a great interest in horticultural and floricultural pursuits, and many gardens
around Woodside bear evidence of his skill in that direction. Mr. and Mrs. Discomb have
had eight children; they are grandparents to thirteen and great-grandparents to seven.
Mr. Discomb takes a lively interest in liberal politics, is an active worker in Church matters,
and interests himself largely in local charities.

The first part of the festivities in connection with the wedding-day cerebration took the
form of a garden party in the afternoon at Mr. Discomb's residence, when songs, recitations, and speeches were indulged in. Afternoon tea was served under the trees, and this was chosen as the fitting time to cut the wedding cake. Quite sixty friends took the opportunity of congratulating the happy couple. In the evening Mr. and Mrs. Discomb gave a social in the Institute, when the host and host ess entered heartily into the fun, and Mrs.
Discomb, in spite of her three score and ten years, cheerfully responded to a young
gentleman's invitation to dance with him. Just before adjourning to supper Dr. Esau
took the opportunity of presenting to Mr. and Mrs. Discomb a handsome tea service, which
had been contributed for by old friends. The doctor wished them many years of health and
happiness, and hoped they would live to celebrate their diamond wedding. Mr. Discomb
feelingly responded.

OBITUARY.

Mr. Thomas Discombe, an old and respected colonist, died at his residence at North Woodside last week, after a brief illness. The deceased gentleman was born in Devonshire, England, on July 18, 1826.
He served an apprenticeship of seven years at Torquay with the firm of Messrs. Morgan,
horticulturists, and was gardener on one of the local estates prior to leaving for South Australia, where, with his wife and young children, he arrived in 1854. The family proceeded to Balhannah, and they have resided in the district ever since.

After two years' work at brick-making Mr. Discombe removed to Woodside, and entered into partnership with Mr. Northcott. Subsequently he drove the mail coach between Mount Torrens and Adelaide for about 20 years, being respectively employed by Messrs. Rounsevell, Cobb, & Co. and
Hill & Co. For several years afterwards he took the reins again during the busy periods. He was a skilful driver. For some years he conducted the Mount Torrens Hotel. He purchased the brickyard
at North Woodside, which he successfully carried on. Six children, 13 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren survive.

THE RECENT SAD DROWNING
ACCIDENT AT WANGARATTA.
The body of the little girl Nita Nicol who was accidentally drowned last Saturday ay week whilst attempting to save her little brother who had fallen into the Ovens River, was found last Saturday by the child's uncle, and a magisterial inquiry was held at the residence of Mrs. Dykes, templeton-street, Wangaratta, on Saturday night, before Mr. A. Pinker ton, JP., the following evidence being, taken :-
J. L. Del'ora deposed : Am a store keeper in Templeton-street, Wangaratta. On Saturday, 19th inst., about noon, I heard a little boy and girl had fallen into the river, and 1 rushed to the bank of the Ovens River and saw the boy rise to the surface of the water. He was struggling in the river, and I threw off my coat and jumped into the river and swam to where the boy was. The boy sank before I got to the place, but again came to the surface, and I grabbed him and swam to the bank with him." He was unconscious, and I worked his arms about, and he started to vomit and cough. Left him lying on his back to look after the little girl, who I had been told was in the river, but could not see her about. There were two little girls standing on the river bank. I swam in the river again, and dived near where 1 found the boy, but could not see any traces of the little girl. Mrs. Dykes then came to the bank of the river, and I asked her to take charge of the boy and sent the two little girls for the police, who came down and commenced dragging, and they were assisted in this by a number of people, many of them diving in the river to try and find the body. Efforts were also made to find the body on Sunday, and the search continued during the week. James B. Nichol deposed : Am a baker and butcher at Thoona. I came to Wangaratta about 2 o'clock to-day, and in company with my brother made a search of the Ovens River in search of the body of my niece, Nita Nicol, this being the eighth day from which she was drowned, and we thought the body might rise to the surface. We found the body near Flannery's paddock. Her clothes were tangled in the wattle, and we procured a pole and hook from Mr. Flannery so that we could hold the body until we got a boat, which was taken by Constable Corry, and my brother-in-law and myself to where the body was. The body was taken to the bank and conveyed home in a trap. I identify the body in the next room as that of my niece Nita Nichol. Effie O Brien, aged 7 years, said she was on the bank of the river last Saturday with Bryce and Nita Nicol and other little girls. Nita was fishing, and Bryce Nicol, aged 4 years threw a bag in the river and went in after it. Nita jumped in after him to try and save him, and floated away on her back. I ran up and told Emma Ah Cue who told Mr. Del'ora. John Martin Nicol deposed : Am a carpenter, residing at Templeton-street, Wangaratta. Am the father of the deceased child, Anita Nicol. Heard of the accident last Saturday afternoon, about half-past one o'clock. Was about six miles from Wangaratta at the time, and returned immediately. There was a great crowd on the river bank searching for the body, and I have used over 70 charges of explosives in the river to try and bring the body to the surface. - Nita was seven years old on the 27th August last. Went down the river today with my brother in law (Frank Gale) to try and find the body, following my brothers, who found the body near Flannery's paddock. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
