General:
John enlisted in World War 1 and his service number was 131. He was killed in action in April 1918 after serving 3 and a half years. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal in October 1917 for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He continually led his bearers under heavy barrages, often acting as bearer himself to fill the place of casualties. He worked continuously for thirty six hours without a rest and by his splendid example acted as a high incentive to his men.

John's effects were returning to Australia on the Barunga, which was destroyed by enemy fire with all cargo lost.

His father was to be presented with John's DCM in Melbourne on 27 September 1918, but unfortunately Samuel died only two weeks before that date from blood poisoning.

A very quiet, but pretty wedding was celebrated at St. John's Church of England, Bairnsdale, yesterday morning, when Mr Harry Dawson, son of Mr H. The bride, who was given away by her father was attired in a white gabardine coat and skirt with small white crepe de chine hat, to match, and white shoes. She was attended by Miss Enid Thomson who wore a white Japanese silk frock with small white hat to match. Both the bride and bridesmaid carried early Victorian bouquets, the gifts of the bridegroom and were supplied by Ronald's, Melbourne. The bridegroom was attended by Mr S. P. Stewart, junr., brother of the bride. The altar was specially arranged with floral decorations by the Misses M. Thomson and M. Potter. After the ceremony, the Wedding March was played by Miss Potter. The groom's presents were - to the bride, a pair of gold single pearl earrings, and to the bridesmaid, a silver chain bag, whilst to the best man, a gold mounted pipe. The bride's present to the groom was a gold cable watch chain.
A number of well wishers who were in attendance at. the ceremony dispensed with the confetti usually used at such events; strewed the path of the happy couple as they left the church, with rose petals.

The wedding party motored to the Victoria Hotel, where Host Furner had prepared a dainty repast. In addition to the usual toasts honored, the health of 'Absent Friends' was proposed by Mr W. B. Thomson, who coupled the names of Sergt. J. Mac Stewart and Sergt. T. P. Thomson, on active service since the outbreak of the war. , A number of congratulatory telegrams were read.

At the close of a very pleasant function Mr and Mrs Dawson left for Melbourne, travelling as far as Sale in a motor car. Their future home will be at East Camberwell.

The bride's travelling costume was a navy blue coat and skirt and tagel hat trimmed with mattier blue. The presents which were costly and numerous included a large number of
cheques.

MR. S. P. STEWART TO MISS GWEN DAVIES.
A picturesque wedding was celebrated at St, John's Church, Toorak, on Thursday, November 25, between Miss Gwen Davies, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil G. Davies, E. S. and A. Bank, Geelong, and Mr. Samuel Parr Stewart, son of Mrs. and the late S. P. Stewart, of 'Elenara,' Fitzroy street, St. Kilda, the officiating clergy man being the Rev. Dr. Law.

The church was attractively decorated in pink and white, and made a beautiful setting for the ceremony The bride, who was given away by her father, wore a graceful frock of white georgette heavily worked with silver beads and pearls, and long tulle veil made to form a train, caught at one side with orange blossom and a tiny sprig of white heather, sent by the bride's sister, Miss Morva Davies, who is abroad studying singing. A posy of pink water lilies and pink roses gave a delicate touch of color.

The maids in attendance were Miss Ruth Barnett (Sydney) and Miss Wendy Love. They wore apricot pink georgette frocks, made in semi Victorian style, with godets of gold lace, and carried shower bouquets of pink carnations and blue delphiniums. The little flower giri, May Dent, looked sweet in white and silver, and carried a basket of rose petals. Mr. Malcolm Hay was best man, and Mr. Harry Barnett, Sydney, groomsman.

The reception was held at 9 Darling street, South Yarra, the bride's mother being gowned to advantage in burgundy georgette trimmed with gold lace, and large black crinoline hat with ostrich feathers, with & posy of autumn tinted pansies to enhance the effect Mrs. Stewart, mother of bride groom, looked well in a beige georgette gown and black hat, relieved by a posy of pink carnations. The honeymoon is being spent touring Tasmania. Upon their return, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart will take up their residence in Head street, Elwood.
