It is thought that Colin had worked at James Hardie Industries and was diagnosed with asbestosis at a young age. According to family discussions he died as a result of taking too much morphine. He had been living in Foster, Victoria at the time.

THE LATE MR. JOSEPH CLARKE.
The late Mr. Joseph Clarke, whose portrait we give in this issue, was buried on Saturday last, by the side of his son, Lewis Clarke, at Norton-Mandeville, Tasmania, in ground given by him to the church. Mr. Clarke was the youngest son of Mr. W. J. T. Clarke, who was a native of bridge water, Somersetshire, England. Mr. W. J. T. Clarke came to New South Wales in the year 1834. Not liking the humid climate, he crossed to Tasmania, living at Lovely Banks where his son William was born, in 1837 he crossed to Victoria and look up Howling Forest, at Ballarat, and Woodlands, Ararat, the latter now the property of Mr. William McCulloch. Mr. Clarke visited England in 1839, returning to Australia in 1840, bringing with him the first Leicester sheep imported into Victoria. His
brother, Mr. Lewis Clarke, wife and family, accompanied him. Mr. Lewis Clarke had a family of two sons, Mr. John Turner Clarke (killed in New South Wales by a fall from his horse in 1872) and Mr. Durham Clarke, proprietor of Lexington Station, Ararat. His daughters are Mrs. Joseph Clarke, Mrs. Samuel Williamson (wife of Mr. S. Williamson, M.L.C.), Mrs. P. McCaughan, Mrs. Edward Dowhng (Tasmania), Mrs. Skilling, and Mrs. Hurst. He died in 1874 at Roseneath, Tasmania. Mr. Joseph Clarke, who was born and educated in Tasmania, settled in 1874, during his father's life-time, living at the Grange, St. Kilda-road, whilst Mandeville-hall, Toorak, was being built.
He was interested in the following properties, left him as his share by his father: - Mount Schank (entailed), 75,000 acres ; Moor Flats, New Zealand, said to be the best land for pastoral purposes in the island; a large station in Queensland, managed by the Australian Pastoral Company, shearing 1,000,000 sheep; and a part interest in Lolworth, the other partner being Mr. W. D. Clarke. His Tasmanian properties are Norton-Mandeville, 22,000 acres; Laurenny, adjoining it, 18,000 acres, making with other land about 200,000 acres.
Mr. Joseph Clarke was most charitable in private, numberless acts of his kindness and generosity never becoming known to the public. In his prime he was a fine, handsome, large-framed man, with a full light beard and moustache and a clear blue eye. Of late years he was not seen much in society, but entertained a good deal at his Toorak house.
He leaves one son, Mr. W. J. T. Clarke, who married Miss Mansfield, by whom he has three daughters. Mr. W. J. T. Clarke, barrister-at-law, was educated by Professor Irving, and took his degree at Oxford. He is a fine specimen of a young Australian, up right, frank, manly, and honourable. He has his father's generous, kindly nature, and is thoroughly well liked by all who know him.
