MARSHMAN-CASSEY.~On the 15th April, at the residence of the bridegroom's parents, Mallala, by licence, by Mr. J. Colbourne, Christian minister, Joshua Jesse, fifth son of Mr. Joshua Marshman, to Miss Charlotte Frances

MR, J. J. MARSHMAN.
The news of the sudden death of Mr. Joshua Jesse Marshman on Saturday last (writes our Brim correspondent came as a great shock to the community. The deceased was apparently in his usual health that morning, and after attending to some sick horses, took them to a paddock close , to the house, it being then about 12 noon. Shortly after Mrs. Marshman called him to dinner. As there was no reply and she could not see him at the sheds or stables, she concluded he had gone to a neighbor's. At 6 p.m. she sent her grandson, Willie Tremewan, and another lad to get the cows, and on their way, about four chains from the house, they saw him lying dead near the gate, with a stick in his hand which he had to make the gate secure. It is surmised he had heart failure, and had lain there since 12 o'clock. A brother in South Australia died under similar circumstances a few years ago while returning from a picnic. The deceased gentleman was 63 years of age, and was born in Penfield, South Australia. He came to the Mallee, along with a number of South Australian settlers, about 26 years ago, afterwards giving up farming pursuits for his trade as a blacksmith. A few years ago he went on the land again. The anxiety caused by the bad seasons and loss of horses through this drought, combined with the after effects of two serious accidents, apparently undermined his constitution, and prematurely aged him. He was one of the leading men in the local Methodist Church, and took a keen and active interest In the Sunday school. His place as an earnest Christian worker will be hard to fill. He leaves a widow and grown up family of three daughters and two sons to mourn their sad loss; also three sisters and two brothers, viz., Mrs. M. Hovey, Brim; Mrs. Amor, Warracknabeal; Mrs, Barr, Lismore; Mr. Albert Marshman. Winchelsea and Mr. Arthur Marshman, Bena, for all of whom much sympathy is expressed

Joshua Jesse Marshman, a very old resident of Brim, was found dead in a paddock. He went out to attend sick
horses, and as he did not return by the evening a search was made, and he was found lying with a stick in his hand
Apparently he had fallen when fastening the paddock gate. It is surmised that heart failure was the cause of death. His brother died suddenly some years ago when returning from a picnic.

William Madden was charged with unlawfully assaulting a married woman named Victoria Elizabeth Dieckmann,
Constable Jones said in accordance with information received he arrested Madden - who was under the influence of liquor, at 10 o'clock' on Wednesday night. Mrs Dieckmann's arm had been broken below the elbow, caused by a blow with a broom handle.
Mrs Dieckmann stated that Madden was boarding with her in Hilliers street. He came home on the evening of the assault and she had tea prepared for him. Madden, who appeared to be under the influence of liquor, complained, and remarked that the contents on the table were not fit for a dog to eat, and became abusive. She ordered him
off the premises, and during his absence she removed his belongings from the house. He returned later and violently attacked witness, and subsequently struck her with a broom-handle, causing a fracture of the right arm. He was a well behaved man when sober.
Madden, who appeared to feel his position keenly, said in answer to the bench that he was sorry for what had happened. He had taken too much liquor on the day in question, and was ignorant of what took place.
The bench, in imposing a fine of £5, in default one month's imprisonment, said it was a serious matter to act in the way Madden had done, and remarked that this, occasion should be a warning to him as to his future behaviour.
The fine was paid.
