BENEFIT ENTERTAINMENT AT
BOX HILL.
LESLIE SWINDON'S SERVICES RECOGNISED.
The recent drowning fatalities at the lagoon in Surrey park were recalled on Tuesday evening, March 23, when a benefit entertainment was given in the Recreation hall, Box Hill, to Mrs. Thomas, mother of one of the victims.
The residents of the district evinced their practical sympathy with the bereaved on that occasion by turning up in large numbers, so much so that the hall was packed to the doors. Cr. W . Redman, president of the Nunawading shire council, presided, and during an interval introduced Sir Robert Best, M.H.R., who made a presentation to Mr. Leslie Swindon, who at the time of the occurrence displayed much gallantry in saving one of the boys, and vainly attempted to rescue the other two. On behalf of Mr. A. J. Petherick and Mrs. Petherick, Sir Robert Best presented him with a handsome 18 carat gold watch, and spoke in glowing terms of his brave conduct in rescuing the son of the donors, and his unsuccessful attempts to also recover the boys Leslie Thomas and Douglas Anderson.
The watch was suitably inscribed with the monograms of the recipient, on the outside, whilst the inside case bore the following inscription: - 'Presented to Leslie Swindon by A. J. Petherick for rescuing my son Leonard from drowning; February 6, 1915.' The handing over of the gift aroused much enthusiasm and applause from the large audience. In acknowledgment, Mr. Swindon contended that he had only done his duty, and was extremely sorry that he had failed to perform the rescue of the other two lads.
President Redman referred to the rescuer as being a great credit to the district. There was no doubt but that some tangible recognition would have been made of his heroic conduct by the public, but under the circumstances the Belgian relief and other patriotic funds had practically exhausted the people's pockets. A first-class set of picture was then shown by Mr. Williams, of the Box Hill picture theatre, at the close of which thanks were extended to all who had assisted in the promotion of the entertainment. It is expected that over £21 will be available as the outcome of the effort towards the object in view. Mr. A. W. Cook acted as hon. secretary, and among others who assisted were Messrs. Clifford, J. Young, D. McFarlane, A. J. Petherick, Frandsen, and Walter Hill.

APPROACHING MARRIAGE
The marriage of Jean Gregory, only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. W. Curtis, with Mr Leslie Swindon will be celebrated at St. Paul's, Rusworth, on Saturday, October 24, at 6.30 p.m.
SWINDON - CURTIS
A PROFUSION of pink and white flowers were grouped in St. Paul's Church of England Rush worth, on Saturday. October 24, when the marriage of Miss Jean Gregory Curtis to Mr Leslie Swindon took place. The Rev. Williams performed the ceremony.
The bridegroom, who is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. Swindon, 21 Dalmore Avenue, Ormond, was supported by Mr Kenneth Davies as best man, and Mr Charles Curtis (brother of the bride), as groomsman.
The bride is the only daughter of Mr and Mrs E. W. Curtis, of "Portreath," Rushworth. She made a very attractive figure in her old world gown of white chiffon and palest pink tulle. The frilly skirt was composed of tiers of tulle and white silk lace, allied to a bodice of white ninon over a pink foundation. Her filmy pink tulle veil was caught to a little silver Lace cap, that had a half wreath of orange blossom at the back, and she held a dainty posy of pink blossom and lily-of-the valley. In keeping with the bride's toilette were the bouffant frocks of pink floral net and moire worn by the bridesmaids, Miss Nina Coyle and Miss Jean Collings. Mittens and floral head bands made pretty accessories, and they carried posies of pink and mauve sweet peas.
The reception was subsequently held at the Parish Hall. The bride's mother wore navy georgette and carried a bouquet of pink roses. Mrs Arnold Vasey (the bride groom's sister) set off her black ensemble with deep red roses.

PRESENTATION TO GUARD
SWINDON.
Guard Thomas H. Swindon, one of the most popular and obliging of railway men, has just retired from service. Last Saturday evening he was entertained by his comrades and friend at a complimentary social at the White Horse hotel, Box Hill, and was presented with an illuminated address and purse of sovereigns. Mr. B. J. Kavanagh, S.M., presided over the gathering. The toast of "The King" was proposed by the chairman and received with musical honors. Mr E. F. G. Hodges proposed the toast of "the Railways," to which Messrs. W Foster and Polglase responded. The toast of "the Guest of the Evening," was proposed by the chairman, supported by Messrs Mears, Armstrong, Kearns, Foster, Campbell, Walters, J. Wilson, Polglase, Hodges, Donegan, R.W. He had always tried to do his duty fairly and squarely to the department and the public, and was grateful to know that he had so many sincere friends. Some of the contents of the purse would enable him to take a trip to Westralia to see some of his children and grandchildren. After that he would settle down in Box Hill, where he had spent so many happy years.
The address would occupy a permanent position on the wall at home, and would serve to remind him of the kindness of his many friends, and would serve to show his children that their poor old dad had won the esteem of those he had been associated with (Applause) Other toasts honored were Mrs Swindon and Family, proposed by Mr Donegan, The Press, proposed by Mr Foster and responded to by Mr Hodges; Host and Hostess, proposed by Mr Mears, The Chairman and Secretary, proposed by Mr. Swindon, and responded to by Messrs Kavanagh and Loverett.
