On his son's (George Howells/John Jones) marriage certificate John's father was named as Elisha Jones, and his mother as Mary Glanville. Elisha JONES was said to be a Sergeant in H.M. 74th Regiment Foot. England on that certificate. Research was carried out in England in the 1990's and proved that the Regiment was incorrect and also that Elisha was not Jones, but was Elisha HOWELLS.
The research carried out in the 1990's found that Mary GLANVILLE married Elisha HOWELLS a sergeant in the 5th Royal Veteran Battalion. They were married at Stoke Damerel, Devon.
Elisha (Elijah) and Mary were married by Banns by John Hawker, curate. Elisha was a sergeant in the 5th Veterans at the time of the marriage and Mary a spinster. Elisha signed the register and Mary made her mark. Witnesses to the marriage were John Glanville who made his mark, and Eliz Johnson, who also made her mark. Unfortunately the parents name were not required or shown in this book.
Elijah (Elisha) was born at Munslow Aston in 1788 (near Ludlow) and enlisted for the 90th Regiment at Milford Pembrokeshire on 30 September 1807 aged 22 and served until 24 Nov 1819, when he was discharged due to reduction in the regiment and chronic catarrh. It is possible that Elisha fought in the Napoleonic wars, as I have found a soldier with the same name in the records of that war. I have both his discharge papers in my possession but they do not mention this however.
He enlisted at Shrewsbury for the 5th Royal Veteran Battalion on 25 Dec 1819 and served to 26 June, 1821 when he was discharged due to disbandment of the regiment and rheumatism. He was 36 years old and died on 17 April 1827 and was buried at Munslow, Aston on 20 April, 1827. On his certificate of discharge in 1819, his statement of service shows that his service was 11 years and 88 days. He was a private for 5 years and 362 days, a corporal for 2 years 26 days and a sergeant for 3 years 65 days. His general conduct as a soldier was "good". On his certificate of discharge in 1821, he had served a further 1 year and 104 days as a sergeant. His general conduct was said to be very good. In the description it states that Elijah is 5 feet 6 inches tall, has fair hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion.

All indications are that as John JONES (George Howells) was born about 1826, and his mother's name was given as Mary Glanville, that he is the son of Mary GLANVILLE and her husband Elijah HOWELLS .

I have found the marriage of a Mary Howells to Richard Yapp in December 1830. Richard is said to be a blacksmith and although Mary's age does not match the other Mary's (Mary Glanville) currently assumed DOB, but I believe there is a relationship due to several DNA matches with her descendants and Michael Jones found in 2019.
Unfortunately, as the marriage is pre compulsory registration, it is not easily checked at this point.Mary and Richard had several children

General:
I cannot be 100% certain that the same Thomas Howells who married Mary, then married Margaret Southern, following the death of Mary (possibly Lloyd). However, in view of the fact that the descendants of Thomas's son Elisha (1788-1827 son of Mary) and descendants of Thomas's daughter Mary ( Yapp 1807-1892 daughter of Margaret, and half sister of Elisha) have DNA match's in 2020, this is the most likely scenario. The DNA matches on the Mary Yapp line are via Mary's daughter Maria Nicholas (Yapp) son and daughter, Arthur Ernest Nicholas and Emma Edweena Nicholas.
