FUNERAL REPORT.
Another old and respected colonist of the State has passed away, in her 64th year. A colonist of 61 years, the late Mrs. Amelia Valentine Payne was born In Bristol, England, on February 14, 1849, and came to Western Australia in 1851 with her parents in the prison ship, the first, Pyrenees. Her father, Mr. William Glanville was officer in charge of the men on board. Soon after arrival, he went to the Mount's, Bay road Depot to take charge, and afterwards was transferred to Toodyay, and for a while was acting superintendent there. In October, 1852, his
wife died at the birth of their second son, the first son being born on the voyage out from England. He was left with five children and two step-daughters, the late Mrs. Marie Antonia Goldwyer (widow of the late William Henry Goldwyer, who was murdered by blacks, in company with Panter and Harding, explorers in the Roebuck Bay district), and Mrs. Anne Gribble, and his two daughters, Mrs.M. The late Mrs Payne was adopted by the late Alfred Carsen until his death, which left her to struggle along alone, but by the help of many kind friends, especially the Wesley Church members, who helped her financially, she was able to provide for herself and children.
In April, 1896, death claimed her eldest daughter, which shock she never recovered from, and at last came a nervous breakdown, which lasted till her death. The funeral, which left the residence of her sister, Mrs. M. Dore, 'Glanville Villa,' Venn street, 'Cottesloe, and proceeded to the Presbyterian portion of the Karrakatta Cemetery, was very largely attended.
The chief mourners were: Miss Sophia Payne (daughter), Mrs. M. Dore and Mrs.A. Gribble (sisters), Mr. H. J. G. Edwards, Mr. Harold Dore, Mr. W.. Goldwyer, Mr. C. Haynes, Mr. W. J. Smith, and Mr. Geo. Morris (nephews),
Mr. Phillip Dore and Mr. W. J. Gribble (brothers-in-law), Mrs, W. J. Smith, Mrs. Geo. Morris, Mrs. Harold Dore, Mrs. W. W. Edwards (nieces), Mr. H. C. Glanville (cousin), Mr. A. Brown, Austin and Haywood Smith, Masters W. A couple of interesting books, one entitled " Poetical Reminiscences of Western Australia," and the other containing a collection of West Australian flowers and ferns, have been forwarded to Lord Charles Beresford by Sir John Forrest, Premier of Western Australia, as a gift from Mrs Margaretta Dore, grand-daughter of Mrs Ann Glanville.
Inside the fly-leaf is written in Mrs Dore's handwriting, " To Admiral Lord Charles and Lady Beresford, in memory of Ann Glanville." Signed "Margaretta Dore, Glanville Villa, Perth, Western Australia." Lord Charles had taken an interest in Ann Glanville because she was the mother of some of the finest sailors in the British Navy.
She was a fine, stalwart woman, and was the noted boat-woman of Saltash, Devon. She died at eighty years of age

A PRESENT TO THE" QUEEN.-We have received from Mrs. Margaretta Doré, of Glanville Villa, Perth, a copy of an address with some congratulatory verses by the same lady, for presentation "to Her Majesty on her Diamond Jubilee. The address is as follows -" May it please Your Majesty In this, the closing year of your august Record Reign, may I beg you graciously to accept these short poems, and the accompanying small tribute, a bouquet of Western Australian wild flowers, framed with the wild nuts of our forests, pressed, arranged, and framed by me.-Your humble, faithful subject, M. DORE."
The book of poems bears the title, " Poetical Reminiscences of Western Australia, by Mrs. Margaretta Doré." The collection of wild flowers has been arranged with considerable taste, pressed with great care, and has, at the lower part, a portrait of Mrs. Doré, with a few dedicatory lines.
The whole is enclosed in a handsome nut frame. The wild flowers and the address have been entrusted to Lady Forrest for presentation to the Queen, and the book, which will he issued from the press in a few days, will be forwarded at once to Lady Forrest for the same purpose.

A MESSAGE TO A WEST
AUSTRALIAN.
London, May 27.
The Queen has addressed a message of thanks to Mrs. Margaretta Doré, of Perth, Western Australia, "who recently sent to Her Majesty a birthday offering in the shape of an album of West Australian wild flowers.
The West Australian (Perth, WA : 1879 - 1954) Thu 13 Jul 1899 Page 5 NEWS AND NOTES.
The Queen and Mrs. Dore.-Immediately following upon the Queen's 80th birthday we published a cablegram announcing that Her Majesty the Queen had graciously accepted a collection of wild flowers, accompanied by a loyal address sent by Mrs. Margaretta Doré, of Cottesloe. The London Daily Telegraph of May 27, which lately came to hand, contains the following reference to the matter :
"The Queen received on her 80th birthday a touching tribute of loyalty and affection from far-off Western Australia. This was in the form of a lovely collection of the wild flowers of that colony, accompanied by a loyal and loving address on silk, composed by the sender, Mrs. Margaretta Doré, of Cottesloe, Perth, Western Australia. Mrs. Doré sent the tribute to Mr. F. Gough, of the Colonial Office, asking him to kindly have it placed before Her Majesty on her behalf. Mr. Gough accordingly sent it to Sir Arthur Bigge, who gave it to the Queen at Windsor Castle on Wednesday. Her Majesty commanded Sir Arthur Bigge to despatch a letter to Mrs. Doré telling her how much the Queen admired the flowers from that far-off colony and thanking the sender for the loyalty and affection for Her Majesty expressed in the address. It is to colonists a gratifying fact that while the Queen made a general reply to thousands of birthday congratulations by a statement in the Court Circular, this humble but beautiful birthday present from the Southern Hemisphere was replied to by a personal letter."

Sir,- Commandant Gration (Salvation Army), matron of Brightview Lodge (Perth), who is on a visit to England, writes to say that a Mr. Manning, of Migration House (the Army migration headquarters in London), desires to know particulars of the author of a book, entitled ''Scraps of Memory,' being stories of West Australian life, by Margaretta Dore. According to inscriptions on a copy of the book in Mr. Manning's possession, the authoress lived at some villa, but the name of the villa has been torn from the copy. The book was printed by the City Printing Company, 221 Murray-street, Perth, in 1905. On the front page it has written on it, 'Dedicated to Sir John Forrest,' and the address of the authoress is given as '97 Villa, Venn-street, Cottesloe, W.A. Possibly some of your readers
may be able to supply the information. -

Notes
General:
I have found the marriage of a Mary Howells to Richard Yapp in December 1830, but it may have been a sister Mary of Elisha Howells rather than George Howells mother Mary (Glanville). Richard is said to be a blacksmith and although Mary's age does not match Mary (Glanville) currently assumed DOB. Due to several DNA matches with her descendants and Michael Jones found in 2019 it could be Mary, sister of Elisha or Mary (Glanville) wife of Elisha. Unfortunately, as the marriage is pre compulsory registration, it is not easily checked at this point if it is Mary Howells or Mary Glanville Howells.
Mary and Richard had several children
1. Mary Yapp b. 1832
2. Elijah Yapp b. 1837
3. Margrett Yapp b. 1838
4. Emma Yapp b. 1845
5. Elizabeth Yapp b. 1847
Richard Yapp died in 1872
Deaths Mar 1892 Yapp Mary 80 Ludlow 6a 494
There are 2 possibilities, Mary Howells who married Richard Yapp may be the Widow of Elijah Howells or may be the sister of Elijah Howells, as previously stated, there are several DNA matches with current generations, so it could be either.
I have recently found a marriage of a Mary Howells to a James Jones in Wales in 1836.

This MAY be the correct Mary Howells, but it is unlikely this can be proven, but may also account for George Howells using the surname Jones later in life.

Notes
General:
in November 2018 I discovered that John Elijah Jones (Howells) stated that he had a cousin living in Cottosloe Western Australia. His cousins name was given as Margretta Dore.
On researching Margretta Dore, I find that her father was William Glanville, an Army Officer who travelled widely. It is uncertain if William Glanville is the brother of Mary Glanville, but for the purposes of this exercise I have added them as siblings until proof or otherwise can be found as to the relationship of Margretta (Margaret) Dore and Michael Cronan and John E Jones (Howells).
No date of birth has yet been found for William Glanville, but his army records state he was born in St Andrews, Devon. He enlisted on 3 February 1831 in the 85th Regiment and transferred to the 47th on 2 May 1831. His occupation at enlistment was brush maker. William's regiment was stationed in Scotland, Ireland, Gibraltar, Malta, Barbados, St Kitts, and England during his time in the Army. He was discharged at his own request on 15th March 1849 in Limerick, Ireland with a gratuity of on years pay. In the last year of his service he was detached to move around the UK on recruitment duties in Cornwall, Devon, Truro, and Redruth.
He is supposed to have come to Australia on the ship the prison ship Pyrenees in 1851 as a warder, but I have not been able to find his name recorded on the manifests so far. Also on Board was his wife Sofia and the children. Sophia supposedly giving birth to William Pyrenees Glanville on 1 January 1851 on that ship.
After Sophia's death in about 1852 or 1853, William was said to have returned to England and re-enlisted and fought in the Crimean War, however I have so far found no evidence of that. All the children and step children remained in Western Australia and no record can be found of William's death in Australia, or elsewhere.
Some stories have it that William vanished in the West Indies, but again, I have no evidence of this.
Is this William when he is supposed to have re-enlisted on his return to England?

I have found the death of a William Glanville, in 1890 (aged 68 years) who is a naval pensioner of Kingston, England. The certificate states that William died at the Royal Portsmouth and Gosport Hospital after being accidentally run over by a cart. His death is recorded as 26 November 1890. There was an inquest held into his death on 28th November 1890. If this is the correct William, it would make him only about 9 years old at his first enlistment (see transcript below), so it is possible it is not the correct person.
WO 12 5920
Sergeant William Glanville Regimental number 876 85/800 was discharged at his own request on 15 March 1849 in Limerick Ireland with a gratuity of one years pay, he was born at St Andrews Devon, he enlisted 3 February 1831 in 85th Regt. and transferred to 47th on 2 May 1831, his occupation at enlistment was brush maker.
WO 12 5902
Entry at time of transfer to 47th (2 May 1831) refers to a document 4.79 which I could not locate. This presumably explains his odd regimental number 876 for the 47th followed by the 85/800 which is number 800 in the 85th Regt. This odd mix followed him till his discharge. The Regt. was posted all over the place.
1827 Berhamporo, East India
On the 12 May 1831 William Glanville embarked on the Amphitude going to Edinburgh.
1832 Edinburgh
1832 Castleblaney Ireland

1841 Malta

1844 Presumably in England as he married Sophia (nee Gomez) in Daventry (Sophia must have followed the Regt. from St Kitts where William Duck left her a widow)
1845 Bolton England
1846 Charleville Ireland
1847 Glevasheew
Promotions/demotions.
WO 12 5907 Promoted to Corporal 21 January 1836
