"BLOCKS ARE QUAGMIRES"
"I wish the Health Officer would take a birds-eye view of the shocking drainage around these parts," wrote Mrs. V. Blackwell, Nar Nar Goon. Paul Blackwell's property had been under water nearly all the year, she declared. The backs of the blocks in Mulcare street were quagmires. It was impossible to walk into the back of any house. There was absolutely no outlet for the water. There was nothing worse than continual dampness to cause T. B., she added. The engineer explained that Mrs. Blackwell's place was further in from the work already done. The fall from Mulcare street was south. The place could not be drained from the end. Cr. Dore moved that Mr. Moore be written to asking if drain were continued, would he be prepared to take the water. Seconded by Cr. M. J. Bourke.-The motion was carried.

The young couple were the recipients of numerous and valuable gifts from their many friends, and after a bountiful supper the evening concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem.

MADDEN\emdash BLACKWELL
BEAUTIFULLY decorated St. Mary's Church of England, Garfield, was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Saturday, January 17th, when the marriage of Peart, second eldest daughter of Mrs. D. Blackwell, Garfield and the late Mr. Blackwell, to James, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs.F. B. Madden, Garfield, was celebrated, Rev. N. A. Mcean performing the ceremony.

The bride, who was given away by her uncle, Mr. Blackwell, looked charming in a gown of white French wool embroidered across the bodice with white flowers and finishing with long full train. Her filmy tulle veil was caught to the head with frangipani and she carried a lovely bouquet of frangipani, carnations and orange blossom.

Mrs. Ken. Towt, as matron of honor, and Miss Tess Connelly, bridesmaid were dressed alike in blue marquisette with lace yokes and peplums. Their head dress being blue veiling with sprays of .flowers, which' blended with the gladioli, water-lilies, roses and maiden-hair fern woven in their bouquets.

Attending the 'groom were Mr. Ern Booley, of Bunnocky- as best man, and Mr. Jack Madden groomsman. During the signing of the register, Mrs. Alf . Parish delightfully rendered a solo. ,
The reception was held at the home of the bride's mother, where Mrs. Blackwell, wearing a blue frock and matching hat received the guests. The 'groom's mother was frocked in a floral dress and blue hat. For travelling the bride wore a pale blue , coat over a white beaded frock, the accessories were also of white.

The engagement is announced of Miss Mia McIntosh Fraser Edward, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. Edward, ''Edinburgh," Champion-street, Brighton Beach (late Ascot Vale), to Mr Robert Bernard Blackwell, second son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Blackwell, of Nar-Nar-Goon, Gippsland.

This engagement seems to have been ended as Bob did not marry Mia Edward and a couple of years later she married someone else.

Robert lived for many years in Clayton and Malvern. Towards the end of his life he moved to Cairns FNQ where he and Rita lived in a Granny flat at the home of Rita's daughter Eileen. Bob was able to recount memories of his time living in England and was able to pass on many family stories and information in a tape recorded letter to his nephew Geoff Blackwell in the late 1980's shortly before his death. These memories have proved an invaluable source of information.
