SARAH BANNAN,
Shelford.

Although the story below states that Sarah married Donald McKinnon in 1873, I have found no marriage record. Sarah did have two children, one in 1873 and one in 1875 that have no father mentioned on the birth certificates and the surnames are registered as Bannan.

Mrs. Sarah McKinnon, relict of the late Donald McKinnon, who held the honour of being the oldest woman living in the district, and also ranked amongst the old residents, died on Friday evening at her home at West Hay, where she had lived for forty two years. Mrs. McKinnon was a native of Geelong, and was married to the late Mr. McKinnon at Geelong in 1873. Her husband was in the employ of the late Sir Samuel Wilson at Ercildoune and Marathon stations in Victoria, being head studmaster: He also managed Ardnowest station, near Mount Gambier. The family came to Hay about 1882, and Mr. McKinnon was first employed on Burrabogie. He subsequently followed station callings in various parts of the district, and died at Hay on 3rd February; 1928, in his eightieth year. Mrs. McKinnon was 93 and a half years old at the time of her death, and although for some time she had not been able to move about much, she, enjoyed fairly good , health. A heart attack developed on Thursday, and she passed away next evening. Notwithstanding her great age she retained a remarkably accurate recollection of all outstanding happenings during her long life, and was keenly interested in all that was, going on around her.

She is survived by one son (Mr Lachlan McKinnon, and three daughters (Mrs. W. J. Fahey, Mrs. B Hugh B. Ross, and Mrs J Connor of Hay). One (son, John, a returned soldier, and one daughter, Mrs McCutcheon, pre deceased her. There are 23 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. granddaughter, Sister Connor, is on active service overseas.

The funeral took place on Sunday and was largely attended by friends of the family. The burial was in the Presbyterian ground in the grave of her late husband. The service was conducted by the Rev. H D Mackie There were many very beautiful floral tributes.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. Ron Wall.

Notes
General:
It would appear that William went to Queensland with his brother James in the late 1890's or early 1900's and was listed as a kangaroo shooter in the vicinity of Mackay at the same time his brother was living in that area. In 1914 William is listed as a farmer at Yinnar, Victoria, so he may have returned to Victoria after his brother John's death at Yinnar and farmed there for a while, but it would appear he returned to Queensland at some stage after this. He is listed as living at Thargomindah, Qld in 1925. His occupation at this time is listed as Station manager.

BALLARAT. Monday.
A woman named Elizabeth Stirrat, aged 50 years, committed suicide this morning by cutting her throat at her residence, Errand-street, Ballarat West. Deceased was observed this morning, at 7 o'clock, by her daughter, Elizabeth Stirrat, sharpening a table knife, and subsequently the daughter found her mother in an outhouse bleeding from the neck, with the knife in her hand. Deceased had been strange in manner since her son committed suicide in the Creswick district in April last. Mrs Stirrat lived apart from her husband, who is resident at Broken Hill. At the inquest the jury gave a verdict of suicide while suffering from temporary insanity.

SUICIDE BY DROWNING AT
ALLENDALE.
ALLENDALE, Friday.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
The people here were startled this afternoon when the news was circulated that John Barclay, 30 years of age, residing here, had been found drowned in Birch's Creek, at the rear of the shire pound, in about 2 feet of water. From what can be ascertained, deceased left his home in Garfield street during yesterday forenoon, and about 4 o'clock in the afternoon was seen passing along the Clementanon- road, and nothing more was seen of him till 10 o'clock this forenoon, when Chas. Garland and Fredk, Holloway, residents of Smeaton, were out shooting, and were attracted to the spot by seeing some clothes on the bank. Looking into the creek, they saw the body of the deceased, face downwards, with only a shirt and flannel on, - The wrists were firmly tied with wire behind the-back, and the left shoulder was out of the water, showing that the suicide was a most determined one. For some months past the relations between the deceased and his wife have been very strained, and he left his home in 'November last and went to work in the Great Northern mine at Rutherglen. This separation an affected the wife that her friends were compelled to intervene, and fearing more serious results the deceased was induced to return home, which he did a fortnight ago, ,His manner and actions were thought to be somewhat singular, but in conversation he betrayed no sign of insanity, on the contrary had expressed himself to the effect that he had done his wife a great injustice, and was anxious to atone for it. Deceased leaves a mother, residing in Ballarat, a wife and six children, the youngest being two month's old. Before leaving home yesterday morning he handed his wife a sum of money, but said nothing as to his intentions.

The Argus (Melbourne Vic.: 1848-1954), Saturday 9 April 1892, page 8
News is just to hand that a man named Barclay committed suicide by drowning at Allendale to-day. Barclay appears to have tied his hands behind his back with a piece of fencing wire, and then lain face downwards in 2ft. of water. Strange to say, the deceased selected the hole in Birch's Creek in which a young man named Kidd drowned himself some time ago. The deceased leaves a widow and six children, the widow being of very unsound mind.

On John's death certificate, his father is given as William Nelson Barclay, however, I suspect that John was probably born in Australia to Elizabeth Barclay. Elizabeth appears to have arrived in Victoria at the age of 18 years without a child in 1860. I have been unable to find a birth registration in Victoria for John. On Elizabeth's marriage certificate she gives her marital status as spinster when she marries Daniel Stirrat in 1870. John Barclay would have been 7 years old at the time of Elizabeth's marriage to Daniel Stirrat

Notes
General:
William served in WW1 his SERN was 796. William left Melbourne in May 1916 on the Ascanius and arrived in France in November 1916. He was made a Corporal in May 1916. He received a gunshot wound to the chest in January 1917 and died of that wound.

There is a letter from a Miss Gladys Jones of Howitt Street Ballarat dated 31 January 1917 asking if the casualty report in a recent Ballarat newspaper reporting a William Barclay as died of wounds was number 796? I presume Gladys may have been William's girlfriend although this is not stated in the letter. 694
