CYCLISTS ON FOOTPATHS.
TWO CASES BEFORE THE POLICE COURT.
Two cyclists were proceeded against, on Thursday, before Mr. G. D. McCormack, P.M., and Mr. D. Curdie, J.P., for riding on footpaths in Camperdown.

Avery George Lloyd did not appear. Constable McNamara said the defendant rode a bicycle on the footpath in Leura-street on the 23rd of December. When spoken to about it, Lloyd said " It is all right." Mr. McCormack : And I suppose you said it was all wrong. Constable McNamara stated that Lloyd had been fined 10s on a former occasion for furious riding on a bicycle. Mr. McCormack: If 10s won't stop him, we'll see if 20s will. A fine of 20s was recorded...................

Avery was born in 1876 in Camperdown, VIC, the son of William Lloyd and his wife Fanny, nee Faulkner. He attended Camperdown State School.[1]

He was carpenter & joiner by trade having served his apprenticeship with his father and continued with him after completion for a total of ten years. He then worked for McCrae & Husband for 6 years on house and general building. From about 1900 he worked around Melbourne on general construction.

In 1903 he was fined for riding a bicycle ("furious riding") on the footpath in Camperdown.[2] It is not surprising to see his name mentioned as a prominent road racer a few years later.[3]

Avery married Delia Lloyd in Victoria in 1906. There were 2 children by this marriage. Delia died in Heidelberg, VIC in 1910.[4]

He remarried to Eva May Shaw in 1913. There were 2 children by this marriage.

An argument with a neighbour landed him in Court charged with using insulting words. It seems obvious he did, but the charge was dismissed.[5] His evidence suggests he had some military background.

In 1917 he applied to become an Australian Munitions Worker under a joint Australian government/ British government scheme to supply skilled workers for the War effort in the UK. He was accepted and his agreement was signed on 04 Oct 1917. He was issued with Australian Munitions Worker Badge No. 2551 and embarked on the SS "Anchises" on 08 Aug 1917 from Sydney, NSW, arriving in Liverpool, England on 02 Oct 1917.

From there he proceeded to France to work for Messrs. McAlpine & Sons as a carpenter. Within a short time he had transferred with the company to Spondon in England.

On 03 Sep 1918 he transferred to Messrs. Davidson Aviation Factory, Hammersmith as a joiner. However, within a few weeks he had been dismissed for leaving work without permission. It seems they later reinstated him.

In Jun 1918 he sought permission to visit relatives in Rugby, England. Permission was given, provided he did not miss his boat.

Avery returned to Australia on the SS "Bahia Castillo", departing Devonport, England on 18 Jul 1919. After disembarking at Port Melbourne on 16 Oct 1919 his agreement was terminated as complete the same day. He returned to live in Camperdown.

Over the next few years he was very frequent correspondent with the Department of Defence about progress on (State) Legislation for Soldier Settlement Blocks and whether Munitions Workers would be eligible - an issue over which the Defence Department had no control. He was living in Camperdown until after 1922. It seems he was not eventually successful in gaining a block as he subsequently moved to West Preston, VIC.

Avery died in Preston, VIC in 1929.

Wagga Wagga Express (NSW : 1879 - 1917) Tue 5 Feb 1895 Page 2 SAD DEATH BY BURNING.
SAD DEATH BY BURNING.
A little girl, 4 1/2 years of age, named Ethel May Lloyd, and a daughter of Mr. John Lloyd, of Lalla Rookh near Yerong Creek, met her death on Friday last as the result of a burning accident, thus making a double bereavement in the same family within a week. It will be remembered that a few days ago we had to chronicle the death of Richard Lloyd, 12 years of age, and a son of Mr. John Lloyd, resulting from his being thrown from his horse, and now the hand of death has carried away this second victim from the same family circle. It appears that on Thursday morning the child was playing in the garden with some other young children, and, to amuse themselves, they lighted a camp fire in a hole dug for that purpose. The unfortunate child must have got too close to the fire and thus ignited her clothes for she suddenly screamed out, and her father, who was inside the house, on running out, found the child completely enveloped in flames. Without hesitating a moment Mr. Lloyd tore the burning garments from the child's body, but not before she had sustained terrible burns. As well as possible Mr. Lloyd dressed the burns, and making all possible haste to Yerong Creek, just managed to catch the train to Wagga. On the arrival of the train here the child was taken to Dr. Long's residence, but her injuries proved so severe that she expired directly the house was reached.

OBITUARY NOTICES.
THE LATE MR. J. LLOYD.
The death took place at his farm residence, Lalla Rook, Yerong Creek, on Thursday, of Mr. John Lloyd, one of the best known men of this district. Not only was he widely known but he was also greatly respected, being a most honorable man in all his dealings and a gentleman in the truest sense of that word. The earlier part of his life was spent in Victoria, his native place being Manifolds Camperdown, Victoria. In 1888, (or thirty ago years) he came from those parts with his life-long friends, Mr and Mrs John Rawson, of "Ingleby." Settling down about the same spot, they mutually shared the varied experience of pioneering work at a time when conditions were not so convenient and hardships were not so easily surmounted. He successfully established a home and his family have taken a prominent part in the social life of the district. He leaves a widow and five sons and five daughters to mourn his loss. One of the sons, Private Harold George Lloyd, of the 3rd Battalion, A.I.F., was killed in action on 4th September, 1917, and the death was a great blow to his parents. Deceased for many years had charge of the postal Receiving Office in his district and in that capacity earned the complete confidence of the public. He was also the electoral officer for that part of the district, his re-appointment at each election time being taken as a matter of course in view of the conscientious services rendered. The Lockhart A. & P Society loses through the death of Mr. Lloyd, one of its oldest and most valued members. When failing health induced Mr. Lloyd some time ago to send in his resignation the Committeemen with one consent endorsed the view of the President, Thomas Bond, who said "I would much prefer to keep his name on." Mr Lloyd greatly appreciated this act of courtesy on the part of the Committee. During his last earthly days he was spiritually comforted by the Rev. W. A. Brice the Church of England Vicar of Lockhart and other friends. The truths of the Christian religion were counted by him a precious possession and during his married life he did not fail to maintain in his home the family altar as a monument of the faith that was in him. He and his good wife ever kept an open house for the hospitable reception of the ministers who found it convenient to stay there. The interment took place in the Yorong Creek Church of England cemetery. There was a large gathering of old friends assembled to show their last respects. The pall-bearers were : Messrs B. L.Boyd, H. Howard, J. Fred Rawson, J. W. Rynehart, R.W.Hartwig, and W. R. Macklan. Rev. W. A. Brice officiated. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs J. Nolan & Co
