MR. WILLIAM HENRY THRUPP

A Sturdy Australian.
In the passing of Mr. William Henry Thrupp, of Lauriston, last Friday afternoon in the Roma General Hospital, the Maranoa district and Queensland lose a sturdy Australian, and a man who had been associated with the progress and development of this district for half a century, and one who had in that period taken a big share in the responsibilities attached to that progress.

Mr. Thrupp came from a family actively connected with the land, and the land was in his blood, inherited and from personal attachment to it and the ups and downs for which it is celebrated. He was born at Ravenswood, Victoria, in 1865, and later went with his family to the Riverina, where he remained for about seven years. At the age of 17 he came to Queensland with the family, and arrived in the Surat district in 1882.

Some years later he returned to Victoria, and was married at Camperdown to Miss Mary Lloyd, and returned to Rosslyn. In 1897 he purchased Lauriston from Mr. Hanlon and after years of fighting prickly pear and scrub, converted it into one of the best improved little holdings in the district. With Lauriston, about 12 miles from Roma, on Surat road, the foundation for extensive land activities, Mr. Thrupp assisted his sons, who have generally followed their father's liking for the land and the grazing industry, and the family now has extensive properties in the district. His wife predeceased him 10 years, leaving a grown up family of nine sons and four daughters, all of whom with the exception of one daughter, Mrs. Singleton (Dalby) are engaged in pastoral activities.

Mr. Thrupp was twice married, his ?? formerly ?? this ?? aged about nine years. Mr. Thrupp, despite his many activities, found time to devote to the service of fellow landowners and the public. He served for many years on Bungil Divisional Board, with colleagues in Hon. James Lalor, Messrs. Donald Fletcher, T. Ferrier, Donald Ross (clerk), and other well known early pastoralists, and at the time of his death was a member of Bungil Shire Council. He was always a lover of a good horse, and has been associated with racing as owner and club official right through his residence in the district, and had bred and owned a number of winners.

He was also actively associated with the W.P. and A. Association, and for a period President,, and for many years active on the committee. He was always ready to lend a helping hand to any movement for the benefit of the town and district, and his liberal assistance will be missed in many quarters..

Mr. Thrupp had been in ill-health for some months, and about six months ago resigned from the Shire Council, but members deferred acceptance, expressing the hope that he would recover his health and again take his seat and join their deliberations. His health gradually became worse, and he passed away on Friday afternoon last.

The funeral moved from the Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon, a preliminary service having been held in the Raphael Lodge, deceased having been a Past Master. The cortege was the largest ever seen in Roma, and was attended by sorrowing relatives, and friends from town and district.

Lauriston, Roma
In the passing of William Henry Thrupp, of Lauriston, Roma, the Maranoa has lost an associate with its progress and development for half a century, and one who during that time has shared the responsibilities attached to the progress.

Mr. Thrupp came from a family actively connected with the land. He was born at Ravenswood, Victoria, in 1865, and later went with his family to the Riverina, where he remained for seven years. At the age of 17 he came to Queensland with his family and settled in the Surat district. Some years later he returned to Victoria and was married at Camperdown to Miss Mary Lloyd. He returned to Surat, where he commenced as a grazier on a small property, Rosslyn.

In 1897 he purchased Lauriston, and after years of fighting prickly pear and scrub, converted it into one of the best improved holdings in the district. His wife predeceased him 10 years ago, leaving a grown-up family of nine sons and four daughters. Mr.Thrupp was twice married, and by this marriage there are two sons, the elder being nine years.

He served for many years as a Bungil shire councillor, and was also actively engaged with the Roma Show Association. The cortege was the largest ever seen in Roma.
