FROM THE RECOLLECTIONS OF ROBERT BERNARD BLACKWELL IN 1987 (GRANDSON)
I've just picked up a letter from the ex Ivy Kemshead, Ivy Smith and she gives a bit of information here about Dad's family. She said to Gilbert, "Do you want to know who Grandma Blackwell's mother was. She was a Miller. I don't know if you remember Uncle Jim that lived under the old walnut tree, he was Grandma Blackwell's brother. Then there was Nell Johnson and Jane Burdett, two sisters and I think there was another brother but cannot call to mind at the moment." She said mother used to take us visiting her grandmother. They lived up on old (yard ?) .. Well I can't remember Uncle Jim, I was too young. Anyway that was part of it. They came from the bottom end of Higham where there was the old village green that they used to have years and years ago…… Usually a triangular strip of ground with a road running along one side and two on an angle leading to another street out the other end. Well that's where they lived. The main road to London went past the front and then there was the one angled on the left hand side, one on the right, they angled…..,.made like an equilateral triangle and down where the two other roads these very narrow lanes met they entered a road which went down to the river and ???????????? but anyway that's where they lived. And there was this enormous walnut tree, it was an enormous thing, I think hundreds of years old, been there for god knows how long. With a great triangular strip of ground, it grew in the middle and these houses ran down there. There was about five houses on each angle. Old stone houses with thatched roofs.
The Council there had occasion one time to dig up this green, put a trench across it and we kids of the village were in our element. We went down there, and I know I bore in triumph home to my mother a human skull, minus the bottom jaw, but it had the top jaw in with the teeth, and Gilbert he had a leg bone, finger bones and that sort of thing. We thought they were great. Mother chased us out of the house, threatened she'd damn well tan our backsides if we didn't take them back and put them where we got them. Anyway we took them back, we didn't like doing it but we had to. Took them back there and there was a great stack of them; skulls, leg bones, thigh bones, anything you could mention, it was all piled there in a heap. The story went around that it had been a battlefield a couple of hundred years ago, but I think more than likely it could have been an old grave yard, I don't know Geoff. Anyway, the bones were all decently re-interred into a fresh spot. But I'll never forget that, all these white bones, all sorts.
Well these old thatched cottages, well that's where I think the Millers lived, down there that was the bottom end of Higham [Ferrers] . But as I say, I was so young when I lived in Higham, when we left there I was barely 8……so my memory of things is not really brilliant and the relations, I do know Geoff that in Higham, practically every second person that we met was a cousin or a relative by marriage of some kind, there was dozens of them there. But I never met I was too young to know and even to be interested. ...................................

Currier
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour.
After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoemaking and glovemaking.

Notes
General:
It is possible that Elizabeth married a John Harden Hardin Harding and had several children with him, living in Yorkshire. In October 1859 there is an Elizabeth Williamson who married John Harden at Radford, Nottinghamshire.
In 1871 John and Elizabeth Hardin are living in Wombwell Main, Yorkshire, with 20 year old daughter Hepzibah Williamson said to be born c. 1851 in Cheshire, and two Hardin daughters, Sarah 10 and Emma 5 both born Wombwell, Yorkshire. To date I haven't found a birth for a Hepzibah Williamson, or Miller that would match the information from the census. Hepzibah Williamson died in 1875 at the age of 24
Elizabeth's place of birth is given as Higham Ferrers, so I suspect this is the correct person, however, I can find no marriage to anyone named Williamson and to date, I have not been able to find Elizabeth in the 1851 census.

..................................................................
Mrs H. Miller of 90 High Street Higham Ferrers, has heard from her son, Lance-Corpl. George William Miller, Northants Regt. That he was wounded on March 27th. and is now in hospital at St. Leonard ' s by the Sea. In the course of his letter he says; " Here I am in a splendid bed, and in one of the best and most comfortable places in England. My word it ' s heaven after that hell of a retreat over yonder. I have a small piece of shell in my right arm. I got hit by a shell that killed three of us and wounded four or five, so I was lucky once more, wasn ' t I? My word it lifted me up a little, but I managed to carry my poor chum from Kettering to safety. He has it rather stiff. We were standing to in a trench on a ridge just behind---- on the ---- and were expecting Fritz any minute to come over, and he was putting up his barrage on us, but I have heard since that our boys went out after him after I left. He caught lots of our chaps with his gunfire as they retired, but still we were holding him all right, and my word he ' s lost some men; everybody says the same. He didn ' t half mean doing this army in, but he ' s as far off as ever from it , and he won ' t now he has failed in this first week. " Lance-Corpl. Miller has now twice been wounded, but this is the first time he has got a Blighty. He has nearly four years of service to his credit, having joined the Colours in September of the year war broke out, and he has been in France nearly three years.

Notes
General:
Private Harry Miller regimental number 20210 was in the 1st /5th Battalion of the 5th Staffordshire Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during WW1. He was buried at that time, but his body was exhumed from German Grave 141 and reburied at the Valenciennes (St Roch) Communal cemetery in France. The cemetery is situated about 1.5 kms from the centre of Valenciennes on the north side of the road to Bruay-Susr-L'Escaut.
Only an estimated 30% - 40% of the WW1 British military service records have survived due to being destroyed by fire during Second World War bombings, and sadly Harry's record appears to be in the 60%- 70% that have been lost.

Notes
General:
possibly married to Maria Boddington in Dec qtr of 1877 at Wellingborough. If this is the correct James Miller he probably died in Dec qtr 1917. The marriage of another couple, John Sargeant and Deborah Brown is on the same page as Maria and James marriage. John & Deborah's daughter married Thomas Blackwell.
His occupation was mostly given as labourer for leather currier.

For other uses, see Currier (disambiguation).
A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier[1] applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof. The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour.
After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoemaking and glovemaking.
