Mr Job Whitham Hartley was a typical Burnley man of the last generation. He carved out his own fortune by sheer pluck and force of character, and he left behind him a name for honesty of purpose which men of greater scholastic attainments may well emulate. As a Guardian he made careful personal enquiry into the circumstances of all applicants for relief, and woe betide the man who tried to impose upon the ratepayers, though, to his honour be it recorded, he was generous to a degree in his votes on behalf of the deserving poor. He used to attend a well know coffee house and always ordered his "glass of watter [sic]" for which he would plan down his tuppence. He seldom drank any, and only gave the order 'for the good of the house,' When the representatives of the local public bodies, at the invitation of Mr. (now Sir) J.W. Maclure went to Leeds to see the steam trams working, prior to giving their consent to the powers sought by the present Burnley and District Tramway Company "Job" ad Mr Maclure had some amusing chaff about teetotalism, and the face of the Burnley Guardian as "John William" told some of his best House of Commons Stories was radiant with smiles Probably those two gentlemen enjoyed that trip more than any other two members of that large party. Probably, too, "Job" relishes his "watter" as well as "John William" did his sparkling champagne.

Died in Canada
Former Burnley Young Lady
Many Burnley friends will learn with sincere regret of the death of Mrs. Guy Allan Dakin, of Woodnorth, Manitoba, Canada, who died on September 24th at Virden Hospital.
She was 30 years of age, and was a grand daughter of the late Mr Job Whittam Hartley and the Late Mr John Dixon of Burnley. Born at Burnley, Miss Elise Dixon, as she then was, went to Canada with her parents, Mr & Mrs H Dixon, now of Minnedosa, at which place she lived until 1918, when she married Mr. Dakin and took up residence at Woodnorth. She was a member of the Methodist Church.. Always bright, happy, and cheerful, with a kindly disposition which endeared her to her friends, she was ever ready to do what she could to help any project in the best interests of the community. Besides her husband, she leaves two children - a daughter aged four, and a son aged two, brothers - Mr Vernon Dixon of Calgary, and Mr John Dixon of Minnedosa - have the heartfelt sympathy of many friends.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, Sepember 25th, from the Methodist Church, Virden, and interment took place in Virden Cemetery
