Notes
General:
5. William DAWES - 187. Bap. 26 Dec 1819 at Lincoln's Inn Fields Wesleyan, Great Queen St. Holborn. ENGLAND. Died 4 Jun 1904 in Semaphore, STH AUST. William and Agnes arrived in Adelaide in the "William Stewart", from Southampton 14th Jul 1853. The ships list describes him as an agricultural labourer, aged 33 yrs. With them were their first 5 children. A daughter, Helen Stewart was born 17th May 1853 during the voyage, but as no record of her life or death can be found, it is, for now, assumed she either died at sea, or shortly after arriving in Adelaide. In a letter from the Colonial Secretary of S.A., there is a directive that a free passage had been provided for William DAWES and his wife and family in the "William Stewart", also that they were nominated by a purchaser of land in the colony. At this time, his brother George had bought land in Hindmarsh, which was sold late in July 1853, so it could be assumed that he was the nominator and bought the land for that purpose. Although little is known if Williams early life he was known to be at Dry Creek in1861, at McKinnon Parade, Nth Adelaide in 1862, Currie St., Adelaide, from 1863 to 1874 then Leigh St, Adelaide until 1879 when he moved to Jamestown S.A.. During his time in Adelaide he was described as a labourer, throughout which he and his family were active members of Holy Trinity Church. William was Sunday School Superintendent for many years. Some claims printed in "Change on Change" by Nancy Robinson don't appear to be correct. His life in Jamestown is correct and was indeed the first wardsman at the new Cottage Hospital, being paid 5/- a day When William retired he returned to Adelaide and lived with his daughter, Caroline and son-in-law Edwin GREEN in their house at 13 Bucknall Rd. Glanville, from where he was buried. Both William and Agnes were buried in the old Woodville Cemetery which has since become the Cheltenham Cemetery. He married Agnes KEMP - 188, in ENGLAND. Born 1822 in ENGLAND. Died 4 Dec 1865 in STH AUST.

Again, a better photo than I have would be greatly appreciated.

They had the following children:

16 i. Agnes Eliza DAWES - 189
17 ii. William DAWES - 192
18 iii. Caroline DAWES - 193
19 iv. Mary Ann DAWES - 195
20 v. George DAWES - 199

Notes
General:
On the marriage certificate of William's son Charles, his occupation is given as Cordwainer.

Hannah and William had four children known to have lived to adulthood. His precise date of death is unknown, but it was before November 1838. Family tradition indicates that Hannah remarried Alexander Ambrose, and that she died 19 September 1862. Hannah was living in Bethnal Green at the 1861 census with her children, George 45, Grocer, and Charlotte, 50, house servant. Hannah was widowed at the time of the 1861 census. 267

A SUDDEN DEATH
.
A sudden death of an elderly married woman named Caroline Slater was reported to the police at a late hour on Saturday night. Mrs. Slater, who was seventy-one years of age, was employed as a nurse at the Freemason's Arms Hotel. She went to bed apparently in good health at nine o'clock on Saturday night and during the night it was discovered that she had died. The deceased had been complaining of pains near her heart for the past few months. The police on interviewing her daughter (Mrs. Hayward) and a son of the deceased at their residence in Murray-street, learned that Mrs. Slater had been in ill-health for some time past and frequently complained of pains around her heart. At an early hour yesterday morning Constable H. Miller visited the hotel and saw the body, and in his report he stated that from the advanced age of the deceased and from what he had learned about her he was satisfied that death was due to natural causes. Dr. E. B. Fitzpatrick was summoned but he refused to give a certificate as he had not seen the woman before her death. Mr. W. Burrowes, J.P., on reading the constable's report said he was satisfied that a post-mortem examination was not necessary, and gave an order for the burial of the body. 3742
