General:
According to some research on Ancestry.com.au, Charlotte Pugh was the daughter of Simon Pugh alias Samuel Smith and Ann Kennedy. Charlotte married James Edwards in Launceston Tasmania on 25 Aug 1845. She then had a relationship with Joseph Purdon and a child, Rebecca Charlotte Purdon was born at the Benevolent Asylum in Portland in 1859. Charlotte then had a relationship with John Cook and had Mary Ann Cook in 1861 at Casteron, William Cook possibly in 1863, and Arthur Archie Cook in 1870 at McArthur Victoria. There was also other children, but I have not been able to confirm any birth other than Mary Ann, Rebecca and William so far. According to the research on Ancestry.com, all the children took on the surname of Cook.
Rebecca Charlotte Purdon Cook b. 1859 and died 1936 at Casterton married Charles Cook. They had 12 children from 1879 to 1905 all these children were born in Casterton.
Arthur (Archie) Cook 1870-1939 married Mary Ann Murphy and had several children. I have been unable to find a matching birth or death but I believe this information to be accurate.
There is another child reportedly named James Cook who was said to be born around 1849 and died in 1873 in the Kew Asylum, however, I have not been able to confirm this information yet.
According to Charlotte's death certificate she was 48 years old, but if the birth information is correct she would have been 62 years of age at her death. Her parents are listed as John Jackson and Charlotte Pew and she was said to have been born in Tasmania. There are 8 or 9 children mentioned on her death certificate. As follows:-

Samuel and Lucy were married at the United Presbyterian Church in Melbourne. Samuel gave his age as 21 and his parents as Thomas Slater and Sarah Shannon, both decd. His father's occupation is given as Engineer and his own birth place given as Heidelberg, Victoria. Lucy's age is given as 18 and her parents and Henry William Pullen and Emma Eliza Rose, both dec'd, her father's occupation given as Modeller and her place of birth given as London. Witnesses to the wedding were WIlliam Purcell, Deborah Lazarus and Charlotte Murray. Samuels address is given as Victoria Parade, Collingwood and his occupation is given as farm labourer. Lucy gives her occupation as domestic servant and her address as Gore Street, Collingwood.
Although Samuel gives his age as 21 and Lucy as 18, it would appear that Samuel was probably around 18 years of age and Lucy was only 16. and they state that both parents are deceased, however it would appear this is also incorrect.

Desertion - Samuel Slater was charged with deserting his wife, Lucy Slater, for the last six months, after ill-using her, and compelling her by the use of physical violence and beating to lead an abandoned life in order to support him in idleness. The consequence of his cruelty to and desertion of his wife had been that their two children had died of starvation. He was ordered to pay 15s a week towards her support for the next twelve months.

At the City Police Court to-day, a woman named Lucy Slater, aged 26 years, was brought up on a charge of bigamy. It is alleged that on the 2nd of January last she married one Forster, a cabman, her husband, James Slater, to whom she was married as far back as 1859, being then and still alive. It appears that she admits having been married to Slater, but denies that the marriage was consummated. She also states that Slater left her shortly afterwards, and that she has been separated from him ever since, and that she was not aware that he was alive. The prisoner was remanded until Thursday.

CITY COURT.
The charge of bigamy preferred against a young woman named Lucy Slater was withdrawn at the City Court on Thursday. Inspector Rabat stated that there was no evidence to justify proceeding with the prosecution, and Mr. Gillott Baid that there existed no proof of the first marriage, and that the prisoner would not admit anything. The charge had been laid on the information of Foster,
the second husband. The woman was accordingly discharged, to the disappointment of a large number of curious loafers who bad assembled in that part of the court set apart for the unwashed populace.

Mrs. Ellen Axtill, of Kooyong road Armadale. who celebrated her ninety first birthday to-day says she will go to London next year to sell an Estate.
"I hope to come back to Australia when the business is cleared up," she added.
Leaving Kllkenny, Ireland, at an early age, Mrs. Axtill arrived at Williamstown in 1846. six years later at Geelong, she married Wllliam Axtill, a successful miner, who died 30 years go. They had a large family, of which seven daughters and two sons are living. The eldest daughter (Mrs. Baird), who Iives in Western Australia is 73 years of age. William Axtill, the eldest son, was formerly with the Victorlan Mounted Police.
He is now manager of a sheep statlon near Temora, N.S.W.
Mrs. Axtill reads and sews without trouble. She is very fond of motoring, and she remarked,. "Even now nothing would please more than a drive with a four-ln-hand."

The death has occurred of Mrs. Ellen Axtill, one of Melbourne's oldest colonists, in her 97th year. Born in Kilkenny, Ireland, she sailed for Australia in the year 1846, being then eight years old, in the sailing ship, Sir Edward Perry, the voyage taking four months and a fortnight, Here she joined her parents, who had two years previously settled in Geelong, In the year 1852 she married William Axtill, of Ashby, who predeceased her thirty years ago. Until the last few days of her life the deceased lady enjoyed perfect health, and took a lively interest in the affairs of the day.
Many and varied were the memories she could recall of early days on the gold diggings. Mrs. Axtill leaves about ninety descendants, amongst whom are seven great-great-grandchildren. Her kindly disposition and gentle, loving nature endeared her to all who knew her. She leaves a family of two sons and four daughters to mourn their great loss! The late Bishop Phelan was a cousin of Mrs. Axtill, as is also Rev. G.. Doyle. Her remains were interred in the Beaufort Cemetery.
