DEATH OF MRS. MICHAEL COSTIGAN.
At Alhambra Station, Coonamble, on Thursday, the 20th June, there passed away to her long home Mrs. Catherine Costigan, relict of the late Mr. Michael Costigan, of Yerong Creek. Mrs. Costigan, then Miss Redmond, arrived in Melbourne with her parents in 1841 from County Carlow, Ireland. Her first residence was at Geelong, and there she was married to Mr. Michael Costigan, shortly afterwards removing to Riverina (Albury district), where she remained until ten years ago, when she settled down with some members of her family at Alhambra.
Her husband predeceased her about twenty six years, but the family stuck together, and now the Costigan Bros, are amongst the most well-to-do of our men on the land. There, were fifteen children born of the marriage, thirteen of them being alive, viz.: - Denis, Yerong Creek; John, Cootamundra; Michael, Timothy, William, Anthony, and Charles, all of Alhambra; Mrs. Driscoll, Yerong Creek ; Mrs. Jones, Henty; Mrs. Byrnes, The Rock; Mrs. O'Keefe, Western Australia; and Misses Catherine and Mary Costigan, Alhambra.
Mrs. Costigan has one brother (Mr. Jas.Redmond, Coonamble) and a sister in Queensland surviving her. The old lady, who was in her 84th year, was of a most hospitable disposition, and no one ever left Alhambra without either having 'broken bread' or been 'invited to do so. Her sons and daughters follow, her , example, and Alhambra is simply hospitality personified. Up to about three weeks ago Mrs Costigan was moving about, but she grew weaker, and passed peacefully away, fortified by the rites of the church she loved so well, and whose precepts she followed. 'The remains were taken into Coonamble on Saturday, and after a service in the RC Church were interred in the new cemetery, the Rev Father O'Farrell conducting, the burial , service. A large number of friends, especially country residents, joined the funeral cortege to show their respect for one who by her kind disposition had well earned it.
Catholic Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1932 - 1942) Thursday 29 June 1939 page 18
Among the gifts for the new church at Coonamble, the opening of which took place last week, were the following:- Marble Altar (at a cost of £1000) from Costigan Bros., Coonamble. Statue of Our Lady (at a cost of £100) from the Most Rev. Dr. J. Norton, Bishop of Bathurst, in memory of his mother.

James wrote a will in 1912 in which he leaves bequests to the Catholic Churches and the convents of Coonamble and Cooma. He states that his daughter Mary Redmond was in the Holy Cross convent at Cooma and had been there for 5 years at the time his will was written in 1912. He states in his will that she will turn 21 on 8 February 1917, at which time all monies held in trust should go to her. I can find not birth of a Mary Redmond in 1896. On James death certificate it states that he got married at the age of 52, approximately 1896 but place of marriage and to whom he married is marked as unknown. I have been unable to find a marriage that corresponds with this information, nor a birth for a Mary Redmond that fits this information.

Obituary - There passed away yesterday an old colonist in the person of Mr James Redmond at the age of 75 years. The deceased, after his arrival in Australia, spent the most of his time in New South Wales, near Sydney, where he was a successful farmer. Ill health and approaching age induced him to sell his property when he, with his daughter, came to Kerang and resided with his nephew, Mr D. Bannan, of this town. The change, though beneficial at first, had no material benefit on his general health, and after a residence of a few months he passed away yesterday as stated, the immediate cause being syncope, supervening upon dropsy. The funeral takes place to-day, the cortege leaving St, Patrick's Church at 11 a.m. for the Kerang cemetery.
