80th Birthday.
80th Birthday.
Heartiest congratulations are extended to Mrs, Robins, senr., of Erica, who celebrated her 80 th birthday on Wednesday, July 15. Mrs. Robins is well-known and highly esteemed throughout this district, as for many years she resided at Willowgrove and Moe.
In a family of eight (six girls and two boys), Mrs Robins was the third child of the late Mr. and Mrs Aaron Cole, and was born at Alma, near Maryborough, in 1862. The other surviving, members of the family are Mrs P. Cole and Mrs E. Miller, of Kiata, and Mr T. Cole, of Bannockburn.
Until she was 15 years of age, Mrs Robins lived at Chinaman's Flat, and then went with her parents, brothers and sisters to Kiata. On February 26, 1884, when she was aged 21, she married Mr Henry Robins, third child of George, and Susanna Robins, at Kiata East. Their first home was at Gerung Gerung, after which they lived in Kiata until 1896, when they went to Yerong Creek, in New South Wales. They spent three years there, then moved to Hopetoun and Kiata for a few months, and came down to Seville, where they spent twelve months.
From Seville, Mr and Mrs Robins went to a farm at Willowgrove, where they resided for 21 years before coming to Moe-to the farm now owned by Mr J. S. Rees, from whence they shifted to a home (afterwards purchased by a son, Bert) in Moore Street, Moe.
During the twelve years spent in Moe, Mrs Robins lost her eldest son, Les., who, for about 21 years, had been employed on a station at Nullagine, in Western Australia. He died on January 10, 1929, and little more than a year later (on February 26, 1930-the 46th , anniversary of their wedding-day) Mr Robins passed away.
It was on September 8, 1934, that Mrs Robins left Moe for Erica, to reside with her, youngest daughter, Miss Ivy Robins, who is in charge of the office at The Purvis Stores. For some time, she also carried out the duties of postmistress, but of more recent years - since Erica grew and her bookkeeping duties increased - she has done any relieving work, and is night telephonist during alternate weeks.
Of her family of eleven, Mrs Robins still has ten living, and also has 23 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.'
Her family comprises -
Stan. (Trafalgar),
Syd. (Willowgrove),
Lilian (Mrs G. A. Marshman, Erica),
Sylvia (Mrs F. Wilson, Trafalgar) 4
Roy (Yarragon),
Hedley (A.I.F.,overseas),
Bert (Erica),
Harold (Salisbury,; near 1 Nhill),
Wally and Ivy (Erica).
About six weeks ago, the eldest daughter (Mrs Marshman), who had been living at Ouyen, and whose husband and two sons are in the Forces, one son having recently returned from overseas, came to reside with her mother and sister at Erica.
To mark the occasion of Mrs Robins's 80th birthday, a family party was arranged for Sunday, 12th July. Among the 17 present were Mr and Mrs Syd. Robins and their son (Harry), Mr and Mrs Roy Robins, Mrs F. Wilson, Mr and Mrs Stan Robins and three children (Nell, Pat and Ray), Mr and Mrs Wally Robins and their infant son (Bryson), Mr Bert Robins, Mrs Marshman and Miss Ivy Robins. Mrs Robins received several letters and telegrams of congratulation, also a cable from her soldier son, Gunner Hedley. Robins, who was in the Middle East when last she" heard from him. During afternoon-tea, Mrs Robins cut the lovely pink iced birthday-cake, made and decorated by Mrs Wally Robins and given by little Bryson to his grandmother. The candles were lit by the youngest member of the family, Miss Ivy Robins.
Except for rheumatics in a knee, Mrs Robins enjoys remarkably good health, and has led a very active life. Her chief interest has always been the Methodist Church, and she still knits socks for her sons. During the last war, she did a lot of work as a member of the Red Cross. Her late husband was keenly interested in the Victorian Farmers' Union when it was first formed, and Mrs. Robins took a leading part in the women's section. Her many friends wish her continued good health and many more happy - birthdays. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/264507425

General:
This child's name appears on mother's death cerotic as deceased. I have not found a birth or death for this person.
There is a death of a Silas Cole in 1912, aged 54 at Ararat. Parents names are given as unknown. This would have made this Silas born about 1858. There is a Silas Cole of Ararat who spent time in prison for vagrancy in the 1880's. Could this be the Silas Cole child of Aaron and Elizabeth, although no matching birth has been found, perhaps he was described as deceased on Elizabeth's death certificate as he was no longer in the family.
The Ballarat Star (Vic. : 1865 - 1924) Wed 8 Sep 1886 Page 2 No title
At the City Police Court yesterday morn a woman named Mary Banks was fined Silas Cole, charged with vagrancy was sent to gaol for three months. Messrs Claxton-and Hickman, J's.P., were the presiding magistrates.
The Ballarat Star (Vic. : 1865 - 1924) Wed 29 Dec 1886 Page 2 No title
A little excitement was created in Lydiard street yesterday afternoon by a short chase after an escaped prisoner from the Ballarat Gaol. It appears that just about a quarter to 4 o'clock a batch of prisoners were being marched from the wood-yard into the court yard of the gaol. One of them, a middle aged man named Silas Cole, who is serving a sentence for vagrancy, suddenly made off up Lydiard street. Warder Carroll, who was in charge, at once gave chase to the run away, who turned round the corner at Messrs Cuthbert and Wynne's office. He was, however, captured in front of Mr A. G. Corbett's machinery establishment, and brought back to durance vile. Cole has on several previous occasions been an inmate of the gaol, and received his present sentence of six months at Ararat on the 17th inst. He is, it seems, a little weak minded, and probably the temptation, when he saw liberty apparently within his grasp, was too much for him to withstand.

Newstead Echo October 16 1918 Alice Collihole received her school certificate. <@Echo*16.10.1918>
Ballarat Courier 28 December 1918 page 10 MALDON. SOCIAL CLUB. The Maldon Social Club's euchre party and dance, in aid of a fund to provide swimming baths in the town, passed off pleasantly, and a fair profit will accrue. For many years baths have been talked of for Maldon, but now a fund has been established, this being considered the most practical step to take. SUCCESSFUL SCHOLARS Three pupils at Welshman's Reef State School, Bessie Pedler, Alice Collihole, and Marion Kruss-were presented recently for qualifying certificate examination. The three girls were successful in passing, which reflects credit on their painstaking teacher, Mr H Hughes.

Notes
General:
Annie was born at Newstead. The legal certifier of the birth was a Mrs Sullivan. Mrs Sullivan appears to have certified many births in the Newstead area, so she was possibly a midwife. Unfortunately her first name is not recorded.
Annie lived on a fruit block no. 496 at Red Cliffs until after her husband's death. She then moved into Red Cliffs. In 1952 she moved to Mildura where she ran a boarding house, but she later returned to Red Cliffs where she lived at 32 Laurel Street until her death. This house was sold in approximately the late 1990's. Annie's daughter Mavis had lived in the house since her mother's death and Mavis then moved into a unit in Red Cliffs and later went into residential care.
Annie was referred to as Grandma by her grandchildren.
