The ASCENDANT 1851 from Diane Cummings Bound For South Australia website [1]
The ASCENDANT 562 tons barque, sailed from London September 22nd 1850 via Plymouth October 3rd 1850, with Captain Robert Spencer, arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia on January 15th, 1851
The first ship from England to South Australia with government passengers for 1851.
The South Australian REGISTER reported (January 16, 1851): The long looked-for ship the ASCENDANT has at length arrived, and we are now enabled to welcome to our shores Mr George Fyfe ANGAS, ESQ., one whose name is honourably identified with South Australia from the commencement of its political existence.
George Fife ANGAS was born on 1 May 1789 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, (Religion: Baptist)
He worked as a Merchant, politician and pastrolist, and died aged 90 in 1879 at his residence Lindsay House, Angaston, near Adelaide SA.
He married Rosetta French in London. Their children were Rosetta French (1813-1898), Sarah Lindsay (1816-1898), Emma (1818-1885), George French (1822-1886), John Howard (1823-1904), Mary Ann (1826-1831), and William Henry (1832-1879).
His son John (previously arrived in 1843 on board the MADRAS from London) came to the Port to greet his parents and brother William. That evening Mrs Angus travelled to town with her sons. Mr Angas preferred not to leave the vessel until noon the next day. The colonists intend to demonstrate their high esteem at a reception, in recognition of his early and successful efforts in the formation of the colony, the large stake he ventured in it, and his unremitting exertions on behalf of South Australia from the moment it struggled into existence.

State Records of South Australia Passenger Lists
The State Records SA Passenger List for Ascendant January 15, 1851: [3]
Aaron's first wife died in Adelaide of Colonial Fever. After 2 or 3 years in South Australia, Aaron came to Victoria and worked as a miner at Bendigo, Forest Creek, Amherst, Alma, Maryborough and Chinaman's Flat. In all he spent 25 years as a miner and during this time he also took out a carter's license and combined this business with mining. He was apparently fairly successful in both occupations for when the Queens Birthday Quartz Crushing and Mining Company was formed on January 17th 1867, Aaron was one of the shareholders with 250 pounds holding in the company. This mine was on the Bealiba Reef at old Dunolly.
On July 15th 1867 Aaron became one of the directors of the company, a post he held for 13 years. This mine was quite profitable for a number of years.
Aaron and Elizabeth Ann married at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in the district of Avoca. Witnesses to the marriage were Thomas Newman and Silas Cole. The officiating minister was Martin Dyson. Both Aaron and Elizabeth's addresses were given as Maryborough, and Elizabeth's place of birth was given as Somersetshire, England. Aaron's occupation was given as miner, and his father's occupation was given as farmer. Elizabeth's had no occupation and her father's occupation was given as school master.
In 1878 Aaron, his wife and 8 children, 2 sons and 6 daughters, went to the Wimmera and selected 320 acres of land in the Parish of Ni Ni, some 16 miles west of Dimboola. A further 320 acres was selected by his daughter and this was worked by her father in conjunction with his own. He was an ardent member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and was a trustee, local preacher and class leader of a new church built at Kiata East.
