Farmer Killed At Pakenham
STRUCK BY PASSENGER TRAIN
Injuries, which resulted in his death were sustained by Mr Thomas Jeremiah, farmer, aged 47 years, of South Pakenham, when his motor truck was struck by a passenger train at the level crossing at Main Street. Pakeham, at half past nine o'clock on Easter Monday morning.
Statements made to Constable Grinter, of Pakenham, by eye-witnesses of the accident, indicate that while Mr Jeremiah was driving along Main street he apparently heard the ???? a.m. down passenger train to Bairnsdale approaching the crossing, which is about a quarter of a mile on the Melbourne side of the Pakenham station. The breakes [sic] of the small motor truck which he was driving, were aplied without effect owing to the wet road, and the truck skidded into the track of the train. The driver of the train noticed the truck, and although every effort was made to stop the train the distance was too short and the motor-truck was struck with great force, Unable to leave the truck Mr Jeremiah received the full force of the impact, and was severely injured about the head and body. He was carried about 4 yards on the cowcatcher of the engine, and was then thrown on to the side of the permanent way. When picked up he was conscious, and he was hurried to a private hospital, where he died 25 minutes after his admittance. Mr Jeremiah leaves a wife and 11 children. The accident was witnessed by some Morwell and Boolarra residents who were passengers on the train.

Notes
General:
Irish Famine Orphan Immigration

The "Earl Grey" Scheme was implemented to select female orphans from the workhouses of Great Britain and Ireland and to bring them to the colonies. The majority of the orphans were victims of the Great Famine in Ireland and were young women aged between 12 and 20 years old. The definition of "orphan" was that the girls had lost one or both parents. On arrival in Australia, the girls were under the jurisdiction of various government officials and Orphans' Committees and were indentured to employers for a specified term and wage. There was considerable opposition in Australia to the scheme due to factors such as anti-Catholic, anti-Irish prejudice, lack of education and lack of training in domestic areas. In consequence, the scheme was abolished in 1850 but the contribution of these young women to Victoria's growth was immeasurable.

The person mentioned below may be our Caroline, who was sometimes referred to as Catherine or Caroline Johnson, and sometimes Johnston in official documents. Caroline/Catherine seems to have consistently stated that she was from County Tyrone, Ireland, however a specific town has so far not been discovered on any official documenation. Cookstown Co Tyrone is looking like a distinct possibility.

Kyneton District Hospital
WHISKY IMPOUNDED,
Caroline Slater, a recent patient in the hospital, wrote complaining that Dr. Smith, resident Surgeon, had refused to allow her brandy, though Dr. Ryan had consented to her daughter bringing her some into the hospital. Her daughter brought her some whisky, which the matron impounded, at the same time ordering her to leave the hospital, which she did. Mrs. Slater asked that the whisky should be returned to her.

The House Committee recommended that the whisky be confiscated, and the matron's action be approved, but as it appeared that there had been some misapprehension, the letter was referred back to the House Committee for further enquiry and answer.
