         Status:
       Children:
                1. Inez Beatrice BLACKWELL [1555] (1891-1979)

Notes
General:
Evangaline's father's occupation was given as grocer on her birth certificate and on her marriage certificate his occupation was given as railway guard.

It is possible that Evangaline was raised by her Aunt and Uncle Thomas and Maria Draper. There is an Eva Adams in the 1871 Eva Adams is said to be a "visitor" and 1881 census she is recorded as "niece" and is living with the Drapers at 3 High Street, Higham Ferrers. Both the Drapers worked in the shoe industry. The age and place of birth matches that given in the 1891 census after Evangaline married William Blackwell.

In 1891 William and Evangaline were boarding with Thomas and Maria Draper and Maria's father David Allen was also living at the same address. This proves that Eva Adams, who had lived with the Drapers since she was at least 4 years of age, is the correct person, and that Ann Maria (Maria ) Draper was Ann Maria Allen, the sister of Evangaline's mother Sarah Allen.

Witnesses to Evangaline and William's marriage were Beatrice Adams and Henry Garwood. Maria Beatrice also recorded as Beatrice Maria Adams was Evangaline's sister who later married Henry Garwood in 1891.

In 1871, Eva's mother, Sarah, was living with her parents and there is no mention of her husband Frederick Adams. She has two children living with her at this time the youngest is Beatrice who was 4 months old at that time. In 1881 Frederick Adams living in Nottinghamshire, occupation is pilot guard (rail). At the same census there is a housekeeper, Ann Wallis and her son Augustus Wallis and 10 children recorded with the surname Adams. All are listed as Frederick's sons and daughters. These 10 children include the two who had been living with Sarah in 1871, but there is no mention of a wife, although Frederick's marital status is recorded as married and the youngest child recorded is only 2 years of age. I have found a Sarah Adams who died in 1879 in Shardlow, Derbyshire.

I have now discovered that Eva's father Frederick Augustus Adams married Sarah Allen and they had 6 children of which Evangaline was the eldest. Sarah died when her youngest child was about 1 year old, in 1879. One year later, in 1880, Frederick married a widow, Elizabeth Fritchley (Choulenter) who had 6 children of her own, including a set of twins. It is possible that within a year of their marriage Elizabeth was placed in a lunatic asylum and that is why Frederick had a housekeeper to assist with the children. By 1891, Elizabeth is living with her husband and family at Ashton under Lyne, Cheshire, England. In 1901 Elizabeth is staying with her daughter Ellen Jane Wheeldon (Fritchley) in Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England. I have been unable to find Frederic Augustus Adams in the 1901 census. Frederick is listed as a widow at the 1911 Census and he is living with his son Frederick Allen Adams in Dukinfield, Lancashire, England.

It would appear that Sarah's sister Maria Draper and her husband Thomas had no biological children of their own but took charge of Evangaline's upbringing some time before 1871.

Marriage: Mar 1880 - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England 152

Notes
General:
I have ascertained that Frederick Adams first wife Sarah died in 1879. He then married Elizabeth Fritchley (Choulerton) who was a widow with approximately 6-8 children at the time.

In 1881 Frederic is living in Alexandra Street, Stapleford, Nottinghamshire. His occupation is given as Pilot Guard (Rail). There is no mention of Sarah and he is living with a housekeeper and a large number of his children, the youngest mentioned being 2 .

Frederic Adams 36 Head married Pilot guard rail.

Frederic A. Adams 3 daughter b. Stapleford
Ada F. Adams 2 daughter b. Stapleford

At this time Evangaline was living with her Aunt and Uncle where she seems to have been since around the time she was 4 years of age or possibly younger. I have only been able to find the births of Edgar T Adams, Beatrice M Adams and Evangaline Adams. The other births have not been found under the name of Adams to date.

I have found the marriage of Frederick Augustus Adams to Elizabeth Fritchley in 1880 in Nottinhamshire. This is the correct marriage to Elizabeth Fritchley, as some of the children at the 1881 census have the second initial of F. I have now found the marriage of Ellen Jane Fritchley (one of the children) to Harry Hives Wheeldon, so it is definitely Fritchley. There is no mention of Frederick Adams second wife Elizabeth at the 1881 census, but I have found an Eliza Adams who was a resident of the lunatic asylum at Sneiton, Nottinghamshire, which is quite near the Adams residence at the time of the 1881 census. Her place of birth is correct, although her age is a few years out.

At the 1891 census I have found Frederick Adams and wife Elizabeth Adams and several of these children living at 92 Bridge Street, Ashton Under Lyne, Cheshire, England. Frederick's occupation is given as iron piler at this time.
Fredric Adams 41
Elizabeth Adams 47
James Josiah Adams 17
Elizabeth Jane Adams 12
Fredric Allen Adams 13
Ada Adams 12

At the 1901 Census I have found an Elizabeth Adams staying with her daughter Ellen Jane Wheeldon at Long Eaton, Derbyshire, England. I have now found the marriage of Ellen Jane Fritchley to Harry Hives Wheeldon.

In 1911, Frederick was a widower living with his son Frederick Allen Adams at 100 Birch Lane, Dunkinfield, Cheshire. Also living at that address was Joseph, who I assume to be James Josiah.
Frederick Allen Adams 32
Amelia Adams 30
Ernest Adams 9
Eva Adams 7
Beatrice Adams 3
Frederick Adams 65
Joseph Adams 36

After much research I have ascertained that Frederick Adams first wife Sarah died in 1879. He then married Elizabeth Fritchley (Choulerton) who was a widow with approximately 6-8 children at the time.

SOME OLDTIME RECOLLECTIONS.
BY OUR SUNBURY CORRESPONDENT.
The Bacchus Marsh Express (Vic. : 1866 - 1918) Saturday 6 March 1886 Page 3
................................This was not the case, for to my knowledge " The Flowery Land " children were here in 1846, but only in very limited numbers.
Richard Sinclair Brodie had three of them in his service, and John Aitken had some more shepherding and hut-keeping, one of whom died and is buried somewhere on the eastern branch of the Kororoit Creek. Brodie used to relate a story of one of his chinkies worth telling, because it will lead up to the other matters worthy of record. John Ah Cue, in search of work, came to the station one day, accompanied by a thoroughly respectable looking European woman. John interviewed Mr. Brodie, and as he required a married couple for the kitcken, and knowing that Ah Cue was a very handy fellow, he resolved to engage the pair. Before doing so he cornered John alone, and put the question "Ah Cue, are you honestly married to the woman, and who married you." This was a necessary precaution, for by the old squatting laws any run-holder knowingly employing a couple not lawfully married did so at the risk of forfeiting his licence to hold Crown lands. Some clauses in those regulations were supremely ridiculous. For instance, we had the privilege of cultivating land to raise produce for the consumption of the station, but were expressly forbidden to grow anything for sale. To return to John. He met Brodie's queries cool as a cucumber. " Oh, yes, me mally all light. Parson Thompson he mally me." -This'satisfied Brodie, so he engaged the pair, and the woman proved such efficient servant that Brodie was quite delighted with his bargain. His brother George came up one day to see how station affairs were going on, and seeing the woman he observed " Richard, I perceive you have got a married couple, who are they." "John Ah Cue and his wife," replied Richard. "It may be so," said George, "but I feel inclined, to doubt it." "Call the man up." Mr. George put John through the same ordeal as his brother had. The Chinaman stuck to his former statements in such a straight forward manner that the brothers, lacking better testimony, felt for the present that they must give credence to his story. That time there were only three ministers of religion resident in Melbourne,. viz., the Reverends Mr. Forbes, Presbyterian,. E Geohaghan, Roman Catholic, and Thompson, Church of England. George Brodie on his a return to town, called upon the three clergy men. Marriages were not so plentiful then that there was any need to refer to the registers: to ascertain if a Chinaman had entered into the matrimonial bonds. As it was more expeditious to drive up than to wait for anyone travelling the way to carry a letter, Brodie ordered out his trap and drove to the station. On his arrival, after the usual greetings, he requested John's presence. That worthy came forth, and Mr. Brodie accosted him with the words "John, Parson - Thompson never married you." Ah Cue answered with the utmost composure, ''I makee mistakee in name, Parson Forbes he mally mine, you savee." " Come, come," said Brodie, highly assumed by the style John hedged the question, ''you are not married." -"I have been to Father .Geohaghan, Mr.Thompson, and Mr. Forbes, and none of those gentlemen -ever married a Chinaman in Melbourne or anywhere else.'' John, in spite of this, persisted that he was "plenty mallied." But at last he burst out laughing and said, " Over the bloomstick, you savee, Mr. Blodie." The long and short was that John, with his quasi-wife, got their walking tickets........................

At the Wangaratta Police court last Saturday before Messrs Phillip son and Thompson, J.P.. Sarah Ah Cue was sentenced to six months' imprisonment on a charge of having no visible means of support. Constable Thompson prosecuted. A child of accused, aged two years, was given into the care of Mrs Gow, who applied for it.

Ovens and Murray Advertiser (Beechworth, Vic. : 1855 -1918) Saturday 24 May 1902 Page 10 WANGARATTA POLICE COURT. Saturday, May 17. (Before Messrs. Phillipson and Thomson, J's.P.) Constable Thomson proceeded against Sarah Ah Cue on the charge of having no lawful visible means of support. Accused pleaded not guilty. Constable Thomson deposed, that he , had frequently warned the accused, and, gave evidence of an incriminating nature. He also stated that frequent complaints had been made about the woman. Sergeant Simcocks corroborated the evidence. Accused made a statement that she had tried hard to obtain work. She had no shelter, and no place to go to at present, but had her hands and was willing to work. ; She had walked out three miles after a place and was willing to work for 5s. a week and keep for her self and baby. The Bench were satisfied that, accused had no lawful means of support, and as she had been convicted previously, she would-be sent to the, female prison at Coburg for six months. The infant child of the last prisoner; an attractive youngster of about 2 years, was brought before the court under the Neglected Childrens' Act, and. Mrs. Go applied and offered to take charge of the child. Mr. Toohey applied on behalf of Mrs. Gow, and Baid that she was willing to adopt the child, - provided the mother would sign an agreement. The Bench-did not make any order in the matter, as they observed it could be settled by the parties themselves, The mother 'then signed the adoption agreement, and handed the child, over to Mrs. Gow.
